Arts Festival
 
Inaugural Poverty Bay Arts Festival Events Schedule Announced!  
The inaugural Poverty Bay Arts Festival will be featuring artists showing in downtown Des Moines Marina District businesses from 10am-4pm on Saturday, Sept. 25th.  Participating businesses will be marked by red and white balloons.  In addition to featuring local and emerging artists, the festival will include several arts and music performances, as well as an opportunity to score your own commemorative magnet and inaugural event poster (available at participating Marina District businesses).  Come on out, enjoy the day, meet the artists, support the local businesses, listen to great music and don't forget to sign up to share your poetry at Auntie Irene's.

Des Moines Celebrates Opening of Trail
Public is Invited!

 
A ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the final mile of the Des Moines Creek Trail will be held Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.
 
The event will be held on the Promontory at the entrance of the Beach Park at 22030 Cliff Avenue South, Des Moines, WA  98198, and will celebrate the completion of the final mile of a 2.5 miles bicycle and pedestrian trail which begins in SeaTac and winds along Des Moines Creek, through Des Moines Creek Park and then passes through the Des Moines Beach Park Historic District and tidelands to the Marina.
 
Trail amenities include a 12 ft. wide paved trail surface with gravel shoulders, trail signage, rest areas, benches, picnic tables, trash cans, drinking fountains, bike racks, new waterfront trail and pedestrain bridge railings and the widening of the Beach Park  entrance for safe pedestrian trail access. Trail parking is available within the Des Moines Beach Park and Marina north parking lot. 
 
Funding and support for trail design and construction was made possible by the City of Des Moines, Des Moines Creek Basin Committee, Midway Sewer District, Washington Department of Transportation, Recreation and Conservation Office- Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program, Puget Sound Regional Council and from the Federal Highways Administration championed by U.S. Senator Patty Murray.

Women's Self Defense Course RAPE AGGRESSION DEFENSE SYSTEM.

This class is (12) twelve hours in length. You must attend all four sessions.

Park in the North parking lot.  The training room is located downstairs on the west side of the West building.

What to Bring:
Athletic attire is recommended.  Sweat pants and cross training running type shoes that provide lateral support are preferred.
 
This program is presented by the Normandy Park Police Department and is taught using the nationally recognized RAPE AGGRESSION DEFENSE SYSTEM.
 
The RAD System is a detailed and comprehensive course for women that begins with crime prevention, risk reduction and avoidance while progressing on to the basics of hands on self-defense.  This program is dedicated to teaching defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault, by utilizing easy, effective and proven self defense tactics.  This course is taught by certified instructors in the area of women's self defense.

Teen Twilight Tour
 
Teens - experience Forks, WA the way Bella Swan did.  Ride with us from the Field House to Forks to step onto the Dazzled by Twilight Tour Shuttle where you'll be whisked away to the world of Twilight in Forks.  Tour stops include the Swan House, Cullen House, Forks Community Hospital, Forks Police Station, Forks High School and more.  Tour includes lunch and a post meal trip to Rialto Beach and James Island.

Dazzled

Field House Dances Are Back!

 

Friday Sept. 17th kicks off the fall field house dance series, hosted by Parks & Recreation staff and volunteers.  6th-8th grade students from Des Moines area schools can come dance, socialize, join in on contests for prizes & enjoy a concession fundraiser hosted by Des Moines Youth Council.  Dances are fun, well supervised and THE thing to do!

Where:  Des Moines Field House

Time:  7:30-10pm.  Parent pick up is STRONGLY encouraged.

Cost:  $7 and I.D. card for Middle School*

 

*Class schedule or progress report may be substituted at staff discretion. 

6th grade students permitted without I.D. card.

Two Writing Classess Start Soon:

Writing Class

 
Instructor, Pat Tyllia, draws from her degree in creative writing and teaching experiences to create an encouraging and supportive environment for you to capture your thoughts and memories in writing. Beginning and beyond writers are welcome. Classes are held at Wesley Garden beginning on Thursday, September 30, 2010 for ten weeks. Continuous Hand Sewing Workshop- Create Log Cabin Blocks. Instructor will cover the art of hand sewing and design. Come and complete at least one block.  A Sewing machine approach will also be demonstrated and may be done at your home. Pre-registration is required no later than Monday, October 4, 2010.Plan to pick-up your Supply List when you register.
