Rec'n Rah!
Community Kudos
Powell Homes -
4th of July Fireworks Celebration,
Des Moines Marina, 10:15pm
Fireworks
Des Moines Parks, Recreation & Senior Services provides recreation experiences in the Waterland City.  To pull it off, we get to work with civic minded groups and people who provide citizens with the quality of life that they deserve.  In Rec 'n Rah, we give thanks to the groups and people that make the Waterland a wonderful community.

This month's Rec 'n Rah! is for Powell Homes .  Once again Powell Homes has stepped up to the plate to provide funding for Fireworks over Des Moines, the community 4th of July celebration at the Des Moines Marina.  Further, when funding and staffing was tight - they took it one step further, and offered to host and organize this year's event!  When you are enjoying your family 4th at the Des Moines Marina this year, remember to thank the good folks at Powell Homes for making sure that the show continued to go on.

Thanks to Powell Homes for providing family memories in our community, and kudos to you for making it happen in 2010.

Join us at Des Moines Activity Center on Wednesday, June 30th, on our patio and play area (weather permitting)  from 11:30am to 1pm for our annual July 4th picnic celebration.  We start the picnic with the banjo and mandolin music of Hank Blumenthal, followed by our picnic lunch of cheeseburgers, baked beans, spinach salad, and of course watermelon!  BEST of all...our volunteers Scott and Rita Eliason will be making their popular and delicious cherry-chocolate dutch oven cobbler!  This 4th of July celebration is sponsored by Charleen Schulz with State Farm Insurance in Des Moines.  There will be small American flags for each picnic guest, compliments of State Farm Insurance.  Cost for the meal is a suggested donation of $3.00 for adults over sixty.  If there is rain, the picnic will be moved indoors.

Mural Honoring Aging in Des MoinesMuralist and Wall
After signing a contract with the City of Des Moines May 26, Artist Chandelle Anderson has begun creating a wall mural at SW 219th Street between Marine View Drive and 7th Ave. S in the Des Moines Marina District.  It is the culmination of a four-year effort by the Arts Commission to secure a site for a public art project to honor aging through grants from the Des Moines Legacy Foundation.  The present site received wide approval with its southern exposure and central location.  The wall is currently painted white, and Anderson's vibrant 12' x 37' foot mural will soon cover it.

The mural depicts a contemporary vision of the elderly interacting with young people in a variety of simple tasks, portraying wisdom and self fulfillment, passing from one generation to the next.  The setting is a realistic outdoor scene, by the water on a summer evening.

Des Moines Legacy Foundation has donated $10,000 for this public art project, said Arts Commissioner Nancy Stephan, who led the project for the commission's visual arts committee.  The committee members include Anita Corby, Katherine Caughey, Cora Morrison and Clark Snure.

Stop by to watch the artist at work and say hello!  The wall is on the S. face of the Des Moines QFC complex, facing Des Moines Florist.  For a peak at the initial mural concept and updates on summer arts opportunities click here
