Doing Reiki "right"
One of my social media contacts posted a comment headed "Are you doing Reiki right?" By the time I got around to checking, the post had disappeared. Although I missed having her perspective, the headline got me thinking.
Some lineages of Reiki teach there is a set protocol for giving a Reiki treatment that should not be varied. My approach has always been: "Here is my protocol. Use it as a starting point, but allow Reiki to teach you the best way for you to work with it." I believe that varies some with each practitioner. The needs of each client are unique, and Reiki will reveal to us how best to address those needs, if we allow it.
So, here is my protocol for doing Reiki "right":
In order to channel the particular vibration of Universal energy that is Reiki, one must have been attuned by a Reiki Master Teacher who traces his/her lineage back to Mikao Usui and must have received training in its history, traditions, and practice.- The practitioner approaches the client, students, colleagues, and all others with utmost integrity in all situations.
- Prior to a session, an explanation of Reiki and the treatment is given to a new client. All clients are given the opportunity to ask questions and establish a focus or intention for the session.
- Prior to beginning a treatment, the practitioner gives thanks for the privilege of being an instrument of healing grace; sets aside ego and attachment to outcome; asks for the highest possible outcome for the client, and asks that nothing interfere with the flow of Reiki.
- Reiki is allowed to flow and hands are placed on the client (or above the body if the client prefers), either through an established progression of hand positions or as the practitioner is intuitively guided.
- The treatment is closed with thanks and again asking for the highest possible outcome.
- The client is given time following the treatment for comments and/or questions.

Good News
My first grandchild, Cy Geoffrey, was born May 9 to my daughter Sharon and son-in-law Geoff. He is beautiful! I'm so excited to get to know this little guy. During a recent Wellness Expo, I gave 15 fifteen-minute Reiki treatments between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Someone passing my exhibit commented that I looked "radiant." As any practitioner knows, it would be impossible not to with all that Reiki flowing!

Gwen Spry, Nanaimo, BC, Canada. Gwen passed away May 19 following a long, hard-fought, and courageous battle against Lime's disease and multiple-organ atrophy. Already a Reiki Master when she took my Master class in 2008, Gwen possessed a sharp mind, quick wit, and a great sense of fun. She was a generous, compassionate, and thoughtful friend.

More Ways to Stay Grounded
Following are excerpts of readers' responses to an article in the April issue: "Feeling ungrounded?" Read last month's article here. Read full readers' comments here.
One of my major grounding activities is the time I spend each morning journaling, praying, reading inspirational materials, asking for guidance, and then being quiet long enough to hear the answers. Joan Liberty
My best grounding occurs when I consciously BREATHE in clean air. Not just to the middle of my chest like I usually do when I don't think about it, but to my solar plexus. Wendy Roseneau
I like to make myself a cuppa and sit outside on the patio in the sunshine and fresh air. I then breathe deeply once, let go of all thoughts or worries, and invite Reiki into my day. I place my hands in the Gassho (prayer) position and say the Gokai (Reiki Principles) out loud. Denise Poynter
Going for a walk with my dog Bella on a dirt road. I remove my socks and shoes and walk barefoot for about a mile. It's unbelievable how this grounds me. Suzanne Braun
Thanks everyone for sharing these suggestions. Read more.
