To talk? Or not to talk?
Two experiences in the past year have caused me to think about conversation during Reiki. One was attending another teacher's Reiki Share. There were three pairs of hands on me, and I felt a strong, warm flow of energy from each.
Several minutes into the session, one practitioner asked another a question. A general conversation ensued. As the talk progressed, I felt the energy in the practitioners' hands diminish. By the end of the 20-minute session, I was feeling no energy from any of the hands on me.
The second experience was my giving brief chair treatments during a public event. Following the first session, which was given in silence, the recipient shook his head in amazement, saying, "I'm blown away. I have no words for what I experienced."
The second recipient initiated a conversation. Later, I overheard him say that he hadn't felt anything much. Granted, he may not have been as sensitive to energy as the first person. Nonetheless, based on my earlier experience, I wondered if the energy in my hands had diminished as talk continued.
Although I allow time for conversation before and after a treatment, I typically remain silent during the treatment itself. I tell new clients they are free to comment or ask questions, but that I will not initiate conversation. I prefer to go inward, attempting to be completely open to the flow of Reiki.
Another reason I remain silent is that many of my clients go into a sleep-like state during the session. They remain fully aware of everything going on, yet are in an interior space of very deep relaxation that I don't like to interrupt.
On the other hand, I have met a practitioner who studied Reiki with Iris Ishikuro and attended numerous Reiki Shares hosted by Iris. (Iris was one of the Masters trained by Takata.) The group talked about everything from recipes to the local news. She does not feel their conversations impaired the flow of Reiki and can't imagine remaining silent.
My guess is there's a wide range of practice and personal preference among practitioners. I would be interested in hearing your experiences and thoughts. Email me, and I'll report responses in a future newsletter.

Living Reiki
by Teri LeClair, Reiki Master, KarunaŽ Reiki Master
Driving down the freeway recently, I realized I was in a state of deep worry that had been with me for some time. Since I'm not a big worrier by nature, I was puzzled as to why I was carrying so much weight about something I had no control over. I wanted to let it go. I repeated The Five Reiki Ideals out loud in the car: "Just for today, I am free of anger. Just for today, I am free of worry, Just for today, I am filled with gratitude. Just for today, I do my work diligently. Just for today, I am kind to others and to myself." Immediately, waves of stress and worry floated right out of my body, and I was filled with a calm, loving peace. How easy was that? When I got home I immediately emailed The Ideals to my husband and kids. I described my experience and suggested if they found themselves stressed out to repeat The Ideals and see if it helped. My husband passed the suggestion along to his assistants. The next day he found The Five Reiki Ideals taped to their computers. Although they don't know Reiki, they find comfort in repeating The Ideals as they go about their day. Me too! Editor's note: This is the version of The Ideals that I teach, along with the original Japanese version, The Gokai.
