Listening to the Voice Within

For much of my life I assumed that many of those around me were more intelligent, more experienced, more knowledgeable, and wiser than I. The result was that I often allowed the opinions of others to unduly influence my decisions, and I frequently made choices based on the well-meaning advice of others or what I thought others' expectations were of me. In doing so, I ignored my own wisdom, even at times when my inner voice shouted that the choice or decision was not right for me.

As my practice of Reiki deepened and I began to heal physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, I came to understand that the wisdom I was seeking in others was within me. I might gather useful information from outside sources, but the knowledge of what was best for me was within me. And I learned that the key to accessing this inner wisdom, this voice within, was to "listen."

"Listening" can be accomplished in a number of ways, but it requires being present in the moment. If we are living in the past or anticipating the future, we are deaf to the present and the wisdom it has for us. These are some of the ways that I "listen":
  • A daily spiritual practice
  • Quiet time alone
  • Reiki self-treatment
  • Spending time in nature, especially near water or in the mountains
  • Paying attention to dreams
  • Reading inspirational material
Whether I am seeking the answer to a specific question, the solution to a problem, or creative inspiration, I ask for guidance, "listen," and then remain alert for the answer, which may show up in myriad ways.

A more in-depth article on this topic, "The Voice Within," may be downloaded from my website. Also see Chapter 12 of Reiki: A Guide for the Practice of Levels I and II for a discussion of inner wisdom.

Second Annual Usui Birthday Celebration

Sunday, August 14
10:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America
Granite Falls, WA

Join Reiki practitioners from around Puget Sound at the Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America for the second annual celebration honoring the birth of Usui Sensei.

Tsubaki is the only Grand Shinto shrine in North America. It represents a tradition that has existed, unbroken, from the dawn of man and one that continues to deeply influence Japanese culture today. Usui's life and practice and his development of Reiki were influenced by Shinto.

Usui Celebration

Prior to the ceremony, Senior Shinto Priest Rev. Koichi Barrish will give a brief explanation of Shinto, it's influence in Japanese culture, and the significance of the ceremony. Following the ceremony, birthday cake will be served on the beautiful Shrine grounds beside the Pilchuck River. For additional information about the  Shrine, visit: www.tsubakishrine.org.

Contact me if you are willing to volunteer the day of the event. We'll need  assistance with parking, creating a sign for parking, creating a photo display of Usui Sensei, and help directing participants.

   Good News

Bill Defeated

Reiki Master Cindy Harms (Las Vegas, Nevada) reports that a bill was  recently defeated in the Nevada state legislature (SB 412) that would have created a Complementary Integrative Medicine Board to encompass all healing modalities from Aromatherapy to Reiki to Tapping. Had it passed, non-approved healing practitioners would be committing a felony.

Although Reiki can do no harm, as it becomes more widely known and more accepted in medical settings, there will be attempts to regulate it and limit its practice. Regulation will reduce its effectiveness if rigid protocols are put in place for its use or politics enters into who is allowed to practice Reiki.

Reiki Riches

One of the great delights of my work is connecting with colleagues from all over the world. I was reminded of this recently when I received an inquiry from a Reiki Master in Tasmania, Australia. Through my writings and the Reiki classes I have taken in other parts of the world, I have connected, in person or through email, with practitioners from South Africa to the Middle East to India to Europe and Japan, from Canadian provinces and many states in the US. What richness and joy these connections have brought into my life! One more reason to be grateful for Reiki.
