Start Where You Are
This may be a shocking revelation for some practitioners: I began sending distant Reiki before I was attuned to Level II. The impetus? My daughter, who lives in Missouri, called to tell me she was having an asthma attack. I was halfway across the country, in Seattle. I asked her to get in a comfortable position and to relax as much as she could. Placing my hands on my own body as a surrogate for hers, I allowed Reiki to flow and said a prayer, asking that it flow to her. The severity of the attack lessened, and she told me afterwards that she could feel my hands on her. Of course, having Level II and the use of the symbols increased the effectiveness of my distant Reiki and my confidence in it, but this initial experience affirmed a belief that I continue to hold: intention is an important element in Reiki, as well as everything else in life. Firmly held, pure intention trumped my lack of knowledge. That doesn't invite me to be slack in my efforts to learn all I can and apply that knowledge as effectively as I possibly can. It reminds me to start wherever I am and do the best I can with the knowledge and abilities I have at the moment, trusting that the Universe will support me. With this in mind, I encourage new practitioners, or practitioners who have lapsed in their use of Reiki, not to let fear of remembering the exact hand positions or protocol stop them from using Reiki anytime an opportunity presents itself. To schedule a hands-on treatment, distant Reiki, or a Reiki mentoring session, contact me.

Good News
Reiki in the News Wall Street Journal, Reiki for Cancer Patients March 15, 2011. New York Times, For Patients with Dementia, Hands-on Comfort April 5, 2011. Both articles point out that little valid research has been done to "scientifically" prove the benefits of Reiki but note that patients who receive treatment feel comforted and that some experience a mitigation of symptoms. Sadly, failure was built into the design of a study that indicates Reiki isn't effective for mitigating the symptoms of fibromyalgia. More about that in a future blog. The Reiki Digest provides a monthly round-up of news articles about Reiki. Improve Your Presentation Skills Reiki Master Max Dixon (Seattle, WA) is one of 29 nationally recognized professional speakers who have shared their wisdom for improving speaking and presentation skills in the newly released book, Paid to Speak. Published by the National Speakers Association, Paid to Speak will be in stores in June. The chapter Max contributed focuses on the impact of stories, "a crucial ingredient in effective communication." Mrs. Takata would agree, as would most of us who love to teach Reiki. Congratulations, Max! New Level II Practitioners Congratulations to new Level II practitioners Mary Aten (Tacoma, WA) and Lucia Neare (Seattle, WA) who completed Level I and II classes on May 8th. Mary will be using Reiki in her Occupational Therapy practice, which specializes in working with children with disabilities. Lucia is a performance artist and director and will be using Reiki in support of her art. New Reiki Master Teacher Reiki Master Teri LeClair (Shoreline, WA) taught her first Reiki Levels I and II class recently. Her enthusiastic students were two of her children, Alicia and Bryan. Congratulations to all!
