Effective Self-Care
One of my Reiki instructors told a Level I class, "If you treat yourself with Reiki one hour each day, your life will be transformed." I've never doubted that statement because I am living proof that Reiki can transform one's life, on all levels. Nevertheless, it was exciting to learn that a well-designed, meticulously executed survey of 546 practitioners confirms the instructor's statement. Conducted in 2010 by Elaine Grundy, the survey found that 87% of practitioners who gave themselves Reiki one hour each day reported an improvement in their overall health. This figure dropped to 68% for those who gave themselves Reiki less than one hour per week. For those practicing self-treatment more than seven hours per week, an amazing 98% reported an improvement in overall health! The figures for those reporting significant improvement in overall health are even more telling: only 19% of those who gave themselves Reiki less than one hour per week reported a significant improvement, whereas, 62% of those who treated themselves seven hours each week reported significant improvement. If we need an incentive to be more diligent in treating ourselves, this information provides it. There are many ways to fit an hour of Reiki into a busy day-to-day schedule. We can allow Reiki to flow:
- while we meditate
- as we wait for an appointment
- while sitting in traffic
- during a worship service
- at any time throughout the day when we have a few idle moments
My sweetest Reiki time is the hour before bed. I forego watching television, reading the page-turner novel, or answering a few more emails. Instead, I play soothing Reiki music, get comfortable, and give myself the gift of treatment, intending that Reiki continue to flow throughout the night. I sleep wonderfully well and wake refreshed and renewed, ready for the new day. We have a tool at our disposal that costs us nothing beyond our initial investment in a Reiki class. It is simple, safe, and effective. Imagine the impact on national health care costs if every adult, or even a significant number of adults, practiced an hour of self-Reiki each day! Note: Complete results of this survey are available here. Articles about various aspects of the survey and commentary are available through the free online magazine, The Reiki Digest, beginning with the February 2011 issue. In the March issue, you will find my article, "All Reiki is Usui Reiki."
