"Cleaning the Pipe"
Once attuned, one never loses the ability to channel Reiki; however, during a recent Jikiden class with Tadao Yamaguchi, I was reminded that it is important to be re-attuned regularly.
Tadao Sensei recommends receiving Reiju (attunement) monthly. He likens it to "cleaning the pipe," meaning the channel within your body through which Reiki flows. Re-attunements help to maintain a strong flow of Reiki and to clear out impediments to the flow that may develop within the practitioner.
I offer practitioners re-attunement prior to a regularly-scheduled Reiki Circle. Practitioners may also ask to receive re-attunement during a treatment session with me.
Additional ways of maintaining and increasing the flow of Reiki:
- Practicing the Three Pillars of Reiki: Gassho meditation, living the Gokai (Five Reiki Ideals), and giving and receiving Reiki.
- A commitment to one's self-healing on all levels, which includes maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
- Release of ego, judgment, and attachment to outcome when giving Reiki.

My Heart is Open
Several years ago a mantra was given to me during my morning meditation. I include it in my attunement protocol, and, when appropriate, I ask clients to repeat it during treatment. Prior to receiving an attunement, students repeat the Gokai (Five Reiki Ideals) three times and then repeat the mantra below three times. After the attunement, I ask that students place their hands over their hearts and repeat the mantra once more. My Heart is Open Mantra
My heart is open My heart is open that I may see truth. My heart is open that I may hear truth. My heart is open that I may speak truth. My heart is open that I may live truth. My heart is open. My heart is open. My heart is open. Selah, selah, selah.*
If it resonates with you, feel free to use this mantra in your practice. You may reprint it as long as you include the following citation: Reprinted from Reiki: A Guide for the Practice of Levels I and II by Marianne Streich, with permission of the author. * I did not know the meaning of the word "selah" when it came to me in mediation, although I remembered having seen it in the Bible. Pronounced "see lah," it is an admonition to weigh, reflect, and thoughtfully consider.

Good News
Jikiden Reiki It was a delight to study with a Japanese teacher so closely connected to the source of Reiki. During the Shoden and Okuden (Level I and Level II) classes I took last month, instructor Tadao Yamaguchi was able to answer questions that had long puzzled me. The new information and valuable insights I received have enhanced my practice of Reiki. Tadao Sensei's lineage goes directly to Hayashi Sensei through his mother, Chiyoko Yamaguchi, who practiced Reiki in Japan for 65 years. He has practiced Reiki himself for 35 years and is the author of Light on the Origins of Reiki (Lotus Press 2007). | Jikiden Reiki Class Halifax, Nova Scotia October 2010 | Reiki at Seattle Children's HospitalReiki Level II practitioner Susan Lamont and I gave Reiki to staff at Seattle Children's Hospital on October 21. Judy Dansdill, Reiki Master and massage therapist, coordinated the event, which provided massage and Reiki to attendees of a WorkLife Balance Symposium. If you are interested in becoming a Reiki volunteer at Children's, call 206.987.4655. Evening Reiki ClassesThanks to Reiki Masters Barbara Firestone and Susan Shrewsbury for assisting in the October/November Level I and II Reiki evening classes. Their participation as "clients" gave students valuable hands-on practice.
