Just for today, I am kind to others...and to myself.
I suspect I'm not alone when I say that I tend to focus on how far I have to go, rather than how far I have come. Recently, I visited that grim landscape of "if only," lamenting past choices, mulling over perceived failures, and recounting missteps.
In the midst of this drama, I received an email from a colleague whom I had met during a conference more than a year ago. She said, "Your kind voice and powerful message has come to me in times of sadness and desperate hopelessness....I wanted you to know the brief time we spent together had a healing impact on me and left me reverberating with messages of hope and healing."
Her message touched me deeply and shifted my focus from how far I have to go to how far this wonderful Reiki journey has brought me. It reminded me that it is not only important that we be kind to others; it is equally important that we be kind to ourselves.
Be kind to yourself. Schedule a distant or hands-on Reiki session.

Disposing of Undesirable Energy
Most of us cleanse our treatment rooms energetically prior to and following Reiki treatments. I believe that it is also important to dispose of undesirable energy as it is released during a treatment so it doesn't reattach itself to the client or find a new home with the practitioner.
Having a small decorative water fountain in the treatment room and burning a 100% beeswax candle can aid in disposing of released energy. I take an additional step, which I learned from Reiki Master Tom Tessereau of the Healing Arts Center in St. Louis. I place salt water in the treatment room.
I position a bowl with 1/4 cup of salt and about one quart of water near each end of my treatment table, taking care to place them out of the way to avoid accidental
spills. I prefer to use sea salt; however,
table salt will work as well. The bowls are emptied as needed, either after each client or, more typically, after two or three clients.
Water attracts and holds the energy. One example of this is the way water conducts electric current; another is the way a swimming pool will hold the energy of the sun for a time after the sun goes down. Salt absorbs and neutralizes energy and for this reason has been used for thousands of years for protection, cleansing, and purification.
For an in depth discussion and explanation of this and other ways to keep your treatment room and your own energy clean, see Chapter 8 of my book, Reiki: A Guide for the Practice of Levels I and II.

On August 15 more than 50 Reiki
practitioners from around Puget Sound gathered at the Tsubaki Grand
Shrine of America in Granite Falls, Washington to
celebrate the 145th birthday of Reiki
founder Mikao Usui. Senior Shinto Priest Rev. Koichi Barrish conducted the beautiful and powerful ceremony of blessing and purification for all attendees and
for honoring Usui Sensei. The ceremony was followed by the sharing of a delicious
birthday cake created by Reiki Master Samantha Prescott.
Save the Date! Next year's celebration will be held on Sunday, August 14. |
Registration forms and deposits are due October 14 for all Fall classes.

Good News
Halifax at Night | I will be attending Jikiden Reiki Shoden and Okuden (Levels I and II) classes in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sept. 30 - Oct. 3. Jikiden is Reiki as it was taught by Dr. Hayashi and Usui Sensei without
the variations Takata introduced when she brought Reiki to the West. Classes will be taught by Tadao Yamaguchi whose mother trained with Hayashi and practiced Reiki in Japan for 65 years. I'll remain in Nova Scotia until October 14 for sightseeing and to attend a Celtic music festival on Cape Breton. |
