Establishing Intention
Prior to each Reiki treatment, I allow 15 minutes or more for the client to share any concerns they wish to address. Based on this conversation, we establish an intention for the session.
The intention may be a desire to relieve tension in the neck and shoulders, or the alleviation of the side effects of chemotherapy, or relief from chronic pain, or healing of an injury, or assistance with the grief process.
During Reiji-Ho, prior to placing my hands on the client, I repeat the intention out loud. As I close the treatment, I place one hand on the client and state the intention as a positive affirmation, usually silently this time.
I believe this process has several benefits: - Establishing an intention helps the client get clear about what they want, the first step in accomplishing any goal.
- My restating the intention further anchors it in the client's consciousness, and also announces the desired outcome to the Higher Power/Guides, making it easier for them to assist with the treatment.
- My holding the intention in consciousness during the treatment increases the effectiveness of the session.
- Reaffirming the intention at the close of the treatment anchors it in the subconscious mind of the client and indicates trust that healing is accomplished.
For my Reiji-Ho process and the non-denominational
prayer of intention I use to open and close treatments, see pages 147-148 of my book, Reiki:
A Guide for the Practice of Levels I and II.
Note: The parameters within which
Reiki is practiced should be made clear verbally and on a consent form signed by the client, so that the client understands Reiki is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment, that its purpose is to support the body's ability to heal itself, and that no claims are made as to outcome.

Usui Birthday Celebration Sunday, August 15 at 2:00 PM
One of the first things Reiki students learn is that Reiki is not a religion, nor is its practice dependent upon any religious doctrine or dogma. However, each of us practices Reiki within the context of our own culture and within the understanding of our own particular spiritual tradition.
On August 15 the first annual celebration of the birth of Mikao Usui will take place within the context of a cultural and spiritual tradition that has pervaded Japanese culture and everyday life for thousands of years, and one which Usui Sensei would have practiced and by which he would have been deeply influenced.
Plans for the ceremony, which will be held at the Tsubaki Grand Shrine of
America near Granite Falls, WA, were finalized last week when the celebration committee, Kris Klohe, Eileen Dey, and I, met with Rev. Koichi Barrish, Senior Shinto Priest. They are:
- Registration begins at 1:30 PM ($15 suggested donation)
- Welcome
- Blessing and purification prayer for attendees
- Honoring the birth and blessing for the soul of Usui Sensei
- All participants send distant Reiki to the Gulf of Mexico
- Sharing of birthday cake
Join fellow Reiki practitioners from around Puget Sound and beyond in honoring our founder in a way that would have had profound meaning for him and that will enrich our understanding of the amazing legacy he gave us.

Reiki Classes for Patients and Caregivers
As
a Reiki volunteer for a cancer support center, Jane Van De Velde, a
registered nurse and Reiki Master Teacher, saw the need to make Reiki more
readily available to patients and caregivers.
To help meet this need, she
created The Reiki Share Project®, a nonprofit
organization based in Chicago that is dedicated to providing Reiki training at
little or no cost to individuals and caregivers who are dealing with the
day-to-day challenges of serious illness, disability, or trauma.
Begun in 2009,
the program has been extended to include training for health care
professionals and first responders---social workers, medics, fire
fighters, and police officers.
After his first Reiki class, one cancer patient
commented with tears in his eyes: "I have a completely new perspective about coping
with chemotherapy now." And from a caregiver: "Reiki has changed my life. I
am calmer, I worry far less, and my blood pressure is lower." For
more information about The Reiki Share
Project® visit www.thereikishareproject.org or contact Jane.
