5 Days and Counting
We've been hiring warehouse staff, hanging signs, accepting product donations and filling up the store shelves. And now we're closer than ever to opening the doors of the Go Green Warehouse!
This Saturday, May 21, is our Grand Opening. If you are in the Denver area, we hope you'll stop by! You'll see amazing deals on some great products ranging from appliances and furniture to bathroom fixtures and flooring. (Doors open at 9am.)
What makes this store so different from other home improvement stores? The answer is simple: Every purchase and every donation supports our job and training programs for military veterans.
The warehouse is our way of ensuring that veterans have meaningful employment opportunities - and a chance to continue serving our country and the environment. Income directly supports our land conservation, weatherization and urban forestry programs.

Garett Reppenhagen's Senate Testimony on Veterans Employment
| Garett Reppenhagen |
In April, Veterans Green Jobs' Garett Reppenhagen presented a powerful statement before the Committee on Veterans' Affairs of the U.S. Senate in Washington D.C.
Titled, "Veterans Employment: Improving the Transition From the Battlefield to the Workforce," his testimony about the unemployment of military veterans provided insight into experiences and solutions that seem to work - and which ones don't.

Serving Low-Income Households with Free Weatherization Services
Recently, our CEO, Dr. Bill Doe, submitted public statements in support of the Colorado Governor's Energy Office's FY12 plans. He covered lots of ground in his statements - highlighting the work we do to weatherize income-qualified homes throughout Denver, Jefferson County and the San Luis Valley here in Colorado. Below are excerpts from his speech:
"Over the last year and a half, our contracts with the GEO have created over 25 weatherization jobs for military veterans representing multiple eras of service, including new veterans from our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, our weatherization subcontractors have created dozens of jobs for veterans and other community members.

With a statewide unemployment rate exceeding 9%, and a national unemployment rate for veterans in excess of 11%, it is vital that our communities continue to support programs that are creating meaningful jobs for veterans and for all Coloradoans...
By providing residential energy efficiency to thousands of homes, the GEO's weatherization programs offer both personal and family economic security to our veterans and energy security to our state and nation.
As a retired Army officer and CEO of a nonprofit, I along with my staff and board of directors, are dedicated to reversing these devastating trends of veteran unemployment. At Veterans Green Jobs, we believe that weatherization and other energy efficiency work are vital components to job creation and Colorado's economic growth, and play a key role in reducing our country's dependence on foreign sources of energy. Our national security is thus linked to our society's collective abilities to support good energy policies and promote sectors of our economy that have strong growth and job potential."

Our Memorial Day Fund
At the end of May, the entire nation will celebrate Memorial Day, a time when we traditionally honor and remember our military veterans.
This year, we encourage you to join us in paying tribute to our nation's servicemen and women by making a gift to Veterans Green Jobs. Whether you contribute in honor of one or all veterans, your gift will have a direct impact on veterans who have answered the call of duty and are now transitioning into civilian life.
Veterans Green Jobs works year-round to combat the crisis of veteran unemployment in our country. Currently, one in eight returning veterans is out of work. Veterans Green Jobs ensures that servicemen and women find the training and experience they need to secure good jobs in the growing green economy. Our nationwide programs focus on weatherization, natural resource conservation, energy conservation and urban reforestation.
In 2011, please stand with us in paying tribute to our nation's heroes - our veterans. We will gladly announce your gift online and recognize your donation in honor or in memory of your designated veteran. To make a tax-deductible donation, please click on DONATE above. Thank you! |
