Greetings!
"There are times in everyone's
life when something constructive
is born out of adversity... "

As the long road to economic recovery continues, more entrepreneurs are born and become a catalyst for growth. These entrepreneurs are around us; faced with a layoff, a new carpentry business is taking off as a result of skills gained from a serious hobby; a construction manager sees the writing on the wall and leaves a struggling company to start his own General Contracting company; and a former classical dancer moves to the Metrowest area and sees the opportunity to open a dance studio.
One of the unique qualities of our country is the spirit of its people to stare at a chasm and decide to build a bridge to the other side. Striking out on one's own is the modernized version of the taming of the Old West. In BusinessKnowHow.com, Patricia Shaeffer cites qualities that successful entrepreneurs share: quality planning, management, determination, discipline, excellent communication skills, the ability to build and maintain relationships, honesty, integrity and a positive attitude. Moreover, the business must provide a unique service or product that people value.
We at Janez are proud to provide our quality design services along with our engineering partners who share these same values. As a result, Janez is proud to announce that in conjunction with RRC Engineering and JRW Engineering for Structural, Fire Protection and Plumbing Engineering services, we have been selected to provide services for the adaptive reuse of a 140 year old fire station in the North End of Boston. The Engine 8 Firehouse will become a mixed use project featuring retail and four residential units. We look forward to working to restore this historic facade and breathe new life into the former fire station.
If you know an entrepreneur that needs an experienced professional with a creative vision to match their own, we would appreciate the referral.
Enjoy the rest of your summer,
Graham

Featured Project:
Architecture designed to increase revenue for Waltham Pharmacy
New Conference Center at Johnson Compounding and Wellness Center
 | In conjunction with Owner's Representative, Gates Healthcare Associates, Janez provided design services for Johnson Compounding. Located on Main Street in the center of Waltham, Johnson Compounding provides specialized pharmaceutical compounding, full-service medical supplies and high-quality nutritional supplements and homeopathic remedies. A recent increase in on-line ordering/shipping coupled with the demand for presentations of new product lines to the public required the conversion of storage space in the Main Street facility.
Programming of the space required a new vertical lift and toilet room for handicap accessibility. In addition to the infrastructure updates required to accommodate the new presentation space, innovative side mounted light fixtures and a suspended ceiling grid were employed to maximize the ceiling height and openess of the space.
"We wanted to provide a first class presentation space without feeling like
we were in the basement. Graham worked with us to find a creative solution that
not only maximized the presentation space, shipping area and a new call
center but expanded Johnson's retail space in the process."
A grand opening to the public and health care product presentations are planned for early September. |

Architectural Point of Interest
Lake Bled, Slovenija |
Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary |
Lake Bled
The setting of Architecture in an urban environment or the countryside can have a significant impact on the place. The structure can inform and give purpose to the space while sometimes the natural environment can be so majestic that the Architecture has to simply try and live up to its beauty. Lake Bled in Slovenija is such a place. With sweeping views of the southern Alps, Slovenija's only island sits in the middle of a cold blue pool of glacial splendor. The town of Bled has existed for at least a millennium with the lake and spa drawing tourists for hundreds of years. The much photographed castle on top of a 100 meter cliff adjacent to the lake provides evidence of the German, Roman, Swiss and French influences as well as the Slovenians themselves who have stood the test of time.
However, the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, situated in the island itself accentuates the solitude of this island and draws young couples to be married in its sanctuary. Before the church was built in the 15 th century, a temple existed on the island and was consecrated to Ziva, the Slavic goddess of love and fertility. Tourists still voyage out the the island by a wooden barge called a Pletna. Couples to this day continue the tradition of carrying their new bride up the 99 steps to the church during which the bride must remain silent. |

Business friendly small town |
As a key component of Janez's business plan, Graham is working as an active member of the Ashland Redevelopment Authority to encourage economic development in the town of Ashland. The ARA seeks to work with the public and private sector to increase communication and provide a welcoming environment for the business community.
As noted in the Metrowest Daily News recently, Graham is working with local resident Paula Parker to foster the formation of a Design Review Board in the town as a part of the permitting process. The key is to provide a clear set of expectations for commercial developers and business owners. Design guidelines and a review process will help to improve the value of property and businesses through an eye on aesthetics and continuity thoughout the town. As a result business will create a more welcoming environment for residents to shop and draw residents from surrounding communities. |
