Greetings!
 Head Shot
Alexander Pope wrote that "Hope springs eternal...". For those of us in the construction industry this spring is hopeful with the number of Client inquiries increasing.  For the last 18 months, success has meant operating lean and keeping the doors open.  Now businesses understand that this is the time to plan.  Investment in anticipation of recovery allows businesses to be well positioned for future growth.  Residential Clients can now make improvements while Contractors are available.

Janez is also investing in the future and I am proud to announce that I am now a Licensed Architect in the state of Illinois. Janez is looking forward to opportunities in Chicago and surrounding areas with local partners.

If you or your business are considering growth or reorganizing the space you are in to be more efficient, we welcome the chance to discuss creative solutions with professionalism.

Best Wishes for warm and DRY weather,
Graham

Design for design professionals

Divine Kitchens design detailIn a sluggish economy, Mariette Barsoum has been leading Divine Kitchens in a period of growth.  Located in Westborough, Massachusetts, Divine Kitchens noticed opportunities for growth in the Wellesley area based on quality design, construction and a solid reputation for high end results.  The company's publications and awards are a testament to the their process and product.  Janez was honored when Mariette reached out to Graham for commercial design services.  Janez provided the back drop for Divine Kitchens to showcase their design skills and specialty lines of kitchen and bath materials.  Working with Divine Kitchen's project manager, Randy Thoms, Janez provided Architectural and Engineering documents, services and support throughout permitting and construction.  The new store on Linden Street in Wellesley is now open for business.

The Bean in Chicago

Chicago has many wonderful examples of Architectural and Urban Planning.  Millennium Park in Chicago is a tourist attraction and relaxing park in the heart of the city. Surrounded by art museums and along Lakeshore Drive, this stretch of green also houses an amphitheater for a relaxing concert in the park.  Nearby is a reflecting pool with large screens that display people images and an odd looking but perfectly smooth piece of modern art that is as beautiful as it is engaging.  The sculpture truly does, "turn the world inside out...".  This mesmerizing polished metal is a clear reflection of the city and it's inhabitants. It is as if the impurities of reality are washed away in the reflection.  I am drawn to it whenever I visit the city and enjoy the reactions of people who walk by, under and thru the Bean. Read more about the creation of the Bean in this Chicago Tribune article.

Earthquake damage in Haiti
Earthquake damage in Haiti

One of the greatest challenges and charges for an Architect is complying with applicable building codes.  It can often be the cause of aesthetic conundrums and confusion by most Clients.  However, as we noticed in the aftermath of two recent and tragic earthquakes, the building code laws, design criteria and enforcement was a key difference in the survival rate of structures and their occupants.

As noted in the Vancouver Sun the location of the epicenter affected the intensity of the quake, but the extent of damage and recovery was a result of preparation and the subsequent code.

Complying with the spirit as well as the letter of the law may lead to creative solutions for the Client. The code is the required minimum but not necessarily the standard for excellence.  The Architect's dual role of service to the Client and professional obligation must be balanced with the health, safety and welfare of the public in mind.  The consequences are real.
