Design for a family restaurant
on a budget
TYY kitchenTu y Yo Mexican Fonda has been open in Powderhouse Square in Somerville for 10 years. After years of recognition in Bostom magazine and the National Restaurant Association for their authentic slow cooked Mexican cuisine, they were ready for a new market in Needham, MA.  The Owners found a great new site with outdoor seating, a full liquor license and an increase in seating capacity of 300%. They needed to completely change the look of the new space that formally held a vietnamesse restaurant.  The long narrow space with service and traffic flow challenges needed to feel warmer, more intimate with descrete service stations. Simple arched walls with reconfigured seating and calming colors were introduced to welcome the guests to a real Mexican dining experience.

During initial design, it was discovered that some back of the house areas needed to be rebuilt, resulting in an addition that housed 2 walk in coolers and dry storage. Janez was able to design a simple structure and assist the Owners with the required town reviews. More information on the transformation can be found at http://www.janezdesign.com/project_restaurant_1.html and www.tuyyo2.com.

Holocaust Memorial in Berlin

This memorial located in the heart of Berlin near the Brandenburg Gate is an installation that moved me with a sense of uneasiness.  I first approached the park after an evening at the Sony Center.  The dark skies and moving silhouettes down the dark aisles accentuate the feeling of walking thru a dangerous place where anything could be around the next corner. The stone blocks from above resemble a rolling topography that is disorientating inside the labyrinth. I could not help but want to walk thru on the way back to the hotel. But my pace quickened the deeper that I walked into the maze, making me question my decision.  I had to be careful because of the undulating ground at my feet.  The memorial gave me a brief glimpse into the horror that the victims of the holocaust must have felt.  This is why I love Architecture and how the built environment can have a lasting impact on how we as people perceive the world around us.  To learn more about this memorial go to

Janez is tapping into Building Information Modeling by actively working with Revit software on Residential and Commerical projects.  This software builds the design instead of drawing lines, thereby allowing the client to view their project in three dimensions at any point during the project.  The model also generates and coordinates material schedules.  Benefits also include the ability to coordinate with engineering disciplines to reduce field coordination that costs time and money.  The benefits can be realized for small to large scale projects.
