Can Hydrophobic coatings prevent the build up of ice on aircraft wings?
|
Sadly, no, or at least not yet. While hydrophobic and superhydrophobic coatings can do many amazing things, this is not one of them. The following is quoted from MITnews, an article by David L. Chandler:"The build-up of ice on surfaces can cause problems in many situations: On airplane wings or on their engine turbine blades, ice can both add weight and interfere with a wing's lift, which can make it impossible to take off... one proposed solution - the use of a super-hydrophobic (water-repellent) coating - has been shown by new research from MIT and a team at General Electric to have serious problems. The reason such a coating would not work has to do with frost - ice that forms on a surface directly from a vapor state, or by freezing of condensed droplets. The formation of frost, according to a study published this month in Applied Physics Letters, could completely defeat the water-repelling properties of a surface that normally would inhibit ice buildup - and, in fact, could actually promote ice formation."

| About Nanolia™ |
The name Nanolia™ is derived from Greek and reflects the company's interest in nano coatings, the application of nano technology to bring new properties to surfaces.
These qualities include making surfaces resistant to abrasion, stain, corrosion or moisture, protected from spills of acids, fats and oils, anti-bacterial, heat tolerant, colour-fast and U/V protected - and easier to clean using only water.

| Greetings! |
Happy New Year!
Welcome to the first 2011 issue of the Nanolia™ newsletter, designed to bring you news of innovative products from around the world.
We believe this will be The Year of Nano, the year that nanotechnology hits the mainstream. It's been a long time coming but it was well worth the wait!
This issue focuses on some of the things that nano technology can do - and some that it can't. Yet.
Watch this space - it's going to get exciting!
Sincerely

New coating technology for glass and ceramic surfaces
|
Nanolia Glass Clear™ and Nanolia Glass Pro™ are advanced products based on the latest research into coating technology for glass and ceramic surfaces. Their easy-to-clean effect results from a chemical reaction of a sol gel solution. After the curing process a cross-linked, three dimensional nanoscale structure is created - only a few atoms thick. These structures give the glass an extremely durable hydrophobic effect. The completely invisible treatment cannot be removed by water, cleaning agents or with high pressure equipment.
This extremely thin coating provides the lowest consumption rate on the market with previously unheard of coverage rates of 400 square metres per litre (14,000 square foot per gallon)!
No wonder we're proud to state that Nanolia Glass Clear is the most cost effective and fastest to apply glass coating solution available. But while Glass Clear gives long term protection lasting several years, for an even longer working life - especially for surfaces such as floors and worktops - we offer Nanolia Glass Pro, a professional two part formulation that lasts 3 times longer.
And for a perfect job on dirty and weathered surfaces, Nanolia has special abrasive cleaning system that has been developed to prepare surfaces and remove contaminations prior to treatment.
Nanolia Glass Cleaner™ is a water-based solution that is the essential easy-to-use pre-treatment for removing stains caused by hard water, silicones and wax, paint and cement. Even stubborn stains such as from joint sealers and render can be removed - completely scratch free! How clean is clean?
The superior efficiency of the Nanolia Glass Cleaner can be easily tested by simply spraying water onto a cleaned area. The water flattens and spreads out with a near zero contact angle to form a thin film with no droplets, which is the accepted standard indication of perfectly clean glass.
Nanolia Glass Clear, Glass Pro and Glass Cleaner are highly recommended for use on all glass surfaces such as:
· Car and truck windscreens · Boat and yacht glass · Building windows and glass · Shower screens · Farming machine windscreens · Mining equipment glass · Aviation glass

Why doesn't Nanolia supply coatings using TiO2?
|
As a result of a lot of recent publicity about the anti-bacterial properties of TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide), many people have asked us if we can supply coatings that include TiO2. So we asked our Technical Director. Here's his reply:
"In answer to your question about coatings using TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide) In fact TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide) works. And when combined with silver it works really well. However, it is still the problem that Ti02 coatings are not long lasting. Our scientists have discussed a few new ideas and raw material information but so far (from the theoretical side) there are as yet no new ideas to avoid this problem.I understand that some companies might want to get in first by announcing that they have a TiO2 product and from that obtain big leads in order to develop special solutions for the customers. But this is a dangerous strategy that will lead only to disappointment and could even damage the reputation of nanocoatings. If we supply products that are only 30% good, we will lose our good reputation very fast. On the other hand, if we have a 30% solution and can improve it, that would be very good. But then we will come under enormous time pressure. Time pressure is poison for any new developments! We have some new ideas for long-lasting silver coatings and smooth surfaces. I think this could be the better way. Offering silver-based products that work well against bacteria would be the correct first step, and then take the second step in offering a product combining silver and TiO2.I will keep you informed of our progress."
So, watch this space for further news of TiO2 and our new Agios Liquid Technology range. In the meantime, Click here for more information on the specific properties of our current product range. It's an already impressive list!
