VARIETY IN HAITI - Update

Variety International's Earthquake efforts in Haiti:

Variety International, in partnership with Children's Health Missions International forged a disaster response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti that occurred on January 12, 2010.  Through a collaboration with Penn State's Global Health Program Director, Dr. Ben Fredrick, VI raised funds that sponsored a travel clinic for 2 outgoing medical teams' vaccinations and purchased a supply of tetanus to be used in Haiti for pre-surgical patients.  Penn State Hershey Medical Center doctors and nurses participated in a joint effort with Operation Smile and Partners in Health and provided surgical care to victims of the Haiti earthquake. The teams were situated in Fond Parisian at the Love a Child orphanage, about 45 minutes outside of Port-au-Prince.  In the words of one of the surgeons:
"I have never been to war, but I have watched on television the effects of the bombing of military targets. In Haiti, the targets were innocent infants, children and adults, as well as their homes, and their belongings. The powerful enemy was heavy blocks of cement. The war lasted less than a minute but killed thousands, injured hundreds of thousands and left more than a million homeless."
Variety International would like to thank all of those who contributed to this disaster response.  The efforts to rebuild the nation of Haiti will be years in the making.

If you receive any inquiries or know of anyone wishing to continue to help support these efforts, donations may be sent to:

SUCCESS STORY: Variety British Columbia Show of Hearts Telethon

Child at telethon presented with a Miley Cyrus signed guitar.Variety British Columbia, Tent 47 held its Variety Show of Hearts Telethon from 7pm on January 30th non-stop until 6pm on January 31st.  The broadcast reached province-wide to over 1.5 million viewers.  The telethon was an outstanding success raising over $7.4M for children with special needs.  It was an impressive undertaking with over 2700 volunteers, many of whom just completed their work making follow-up thank you calls to donors -- a very nice extra touch.

Sharing hosting duties again this year was a children's favorite: Bob McGrath of Sesame Street, an honorary Tent 47 member and a veteran performer on the telethon since 1973.  Featured on the Show were taped concerts by Paul McCartney; Divas including Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow, Jordin Sparks, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Cyndi Lauper, Leona Lewis, Adele and Jennifer Hudson, with Paula Abdul hosting; plus Tina Turner Live in Amsterdam; Stevie Wonder; Cirque du Soleil; and Kristi Yamaguchi.

Telethon child with co-host Bob McGrath and skateboarders.Since raising $60,000 at the first telethon in 1966, Variety and Global BC have worked together to create an incredible 23-hour experience every year that features amazing stories of hope from around the province as well as fantastic entertainment from around the world. Thanks to the generosity of British Columbians, the telethon has come a long way - the 2009 telethon raised a record-breaking $8.3 million.

Each year, planning for Tent 47's telethon starts about a month after the previous telethon, so there's truly never a gap.  There are partnerships to initiate and renew...children stories to be researched, written, and produced...entertainment to line-up...props to be built...supplies to be sourced...donations to be solicited...fundraising to be done.  There are literally a million details to be taken care of, but thankfully a veteran core Variety membership who have been through it all before, the technical expertise of longtime partner Global BC, a dedicated staff, and over 2500 volunteers dedicate to the cause of helping inspire hope, enrich lives, and build a better future for children with special needs.

And 2010 was no different, just a bit more challenging.  The Show of Hearts telethon was moved up 2 weeks due to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.  What an event!  The excitement of the Olympics made for tight media time and attention.  We're told a special shout-out goes to Tent 47 Marketing Director, Carla Jones and her team who found creative ways to get the message out about the telethon, to find and negotiate media space, and to build awareness.

Congratulations to the whole Telethon Team in British Columbia!  From start to finish, including thank you calls, the effort is outstanding.  Nice work Team!

Heartley - Olympic SpiritAnd, speaking of the Olympics, check out Heartly, our beloved albeit unofficial mascot, holding the Olympic torch.  Heartly took part in an Olympic event called "Mascot Mania" on Friday, February 12th.  Local mascots gathered for a mascot triathlon, quite a daring adventure, and welcomed the Olympic torch to Vancouver.  Variety, the Children's Charity is getting great exposure!

VARIETY EVENTS IN THE NEWS

There were all shapes and sizes of successful Variety events.  From Telethons and Radiothons, to anniversary galas and Gold Heart events, to fundraisers and "friend-raisers", the great stories took all sorts of creative twists over the past few months.

On a national level in the US, did anyone catch Whoopi Goldberg on The View promoting Variety Gold Heart pins on February 16th?  Wish we had a copy of the segment, but here's a screenshot at least of Whoopi wearing her pin telling studio and television audiences to support the campaign and purchase their pins at local theatres.  Special thanks to Whoopi!

Variety Pittsburgh 82nd Anniversary GalaVariety Pittsburgh, Tent 1 held their 82nd Anniversary Gala "Bella Notte Italia" on November 13 at the Omni William Penn Hotel, where Variety Club held its first annual banquet on November 11, 1928.  Honored were Ralph Papa, Chairman, Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania and The Hill House Association.  The evening commenced with cocktails and pre-dinner entertainment featuring 11 year old vocalist Jackie Evancho, the new voice of classical crossover, who performed songs from Josh Groban and Italian arias.  Variety's more than 300 guests helped to raise $167,000 for Variety's programs and services.

Variety  Pittsburgh , Tent 1 also held its annual "Cares for Kids" Radiothon with radio partner Steel City Media's Q92.9 FM raising more than $96,600.  Though challenged by our economic times, Q92.9's generous listening audience in the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, responded by purchasing 275 "Buddy Bears" to help send kids with disabilities to Camp Variety for Kids this summer.

Variety Manitoba Tent 58, in proud partnership with Parks Canada is developing the Variety Heritage Adventure Park (VHAP) This world-class park will be built in the heart of Winnipeg on a beautiful green space located in Winnipeg's most popular meeting place The Forks National Historic Site. The VHAP will feature unique interactive play structures, water features, a natural landscaping flow, and a performance area for interpretive programs. Heritage themes will play an important educational role for families, school groups & caregivers. Key to the park design will be accessibility for children of all abilities and best of all,the VHAP will be free for all to enjoy!

The project budget is approximately $1.5 million. The Government of Canada is investing $600,000. Parks Canada is donating the land, Variety Manitoba received naming rights in return for a $250K commitment, the City of Winnipeg matched Variety's investment & we have also received contributions from several of Variety's corporate and individual donors bringing total funds raised to date to over $1 million.  Additional dollars raised in excess of the project goal will be used to establish an endowment fund, thus ensuring the park's long term sustainability.  Ground breaking is scheduled for late spring.  To learn more visit www.varietymanitoba.com

Variety Barbados, Tent 73 held a Gold Heart Launch Event on Thursday January 28th.  The event was held at the VIP theatre at Olympus Theatres in Christ Church, Barbados.  A fun celebration was followed by a viewing of "The Blind Side" which "The Barbados Advocate" reported was "a fitting tale of human kindness towards a child."  The Variety team tied their launch into Valentine's Day and asked all people to wear their Variety Hearts and red on Friday, February 12th.

Beers 4 Bikes InviteVariety Kansas City, Tent 8 hosted their first "Beer for Bikes" night on Feb 3rd.  They promoted "great beer, good food, awesome music, fun people and free stuff" for a great social evening to attract new friends and raise funds for  "Kids on the Move", an organization that provides therapeutic bikes to Variety kids with physical disabilities.  Word has it that this "friendraiser" / fundraiser is a "Movement in the making", so we'll watch for more.  Check out the creative video they used to promote the event.

In addition, Variety Kansas City hosted "Runway to the Rescue", a benefit fashion show on February 12th to raise funds for the Variety International Haiti mission.  Nice work team!  The fashion industry certainly qualifies as entertainment in the 21st century.  And the team in Haiti appreciates the continued support.  Great ideas!

Variety New York, Tent 35 also hosted a "friendraiser" / fundraiser through their Young Variety group.  It was their 2nd Annual Open Your Heart Benefit.  Over 250 young New Yorkers gathered for a fun evening on February 9 at Marquee lounge in the Chelsea area of downtown Manhattan for music, sponsored cocktails, silent auction and raffle raising over $10,000.

Variety WI - Hip Hop KidsVariety of Wisconsin, Tent 14 turns 75 this year and they already have their birthday celebration in full swing...  On Sunday, February 21st they hosted a free hip hop concert by The Figureheads for Variety kids and their families.  The music and dancing is always a great way to get the kids excited and involved.  But it didn't end there, as there were prizes and heart-shaped cookies for everyone.  And you have to see the kids singing and dancing to a special Variety hip hop birthday song!

While all the kids got to celebrate, the next event was being prepared for March 3rd focused on the adults, the biggest supporters and contributors over the past 75 years.  The event took place at a dueling piano bar -- Lucile's Rockin Piano Bar to continue the music and celebratory theme with a show, appetizers and of course birthday cake.   A special tribute was paid to the founding fathers of the group thanks to some great family tree research by the Variety team.

Variety of New Zealand, Tent 68
recently turned 20 and is in the midst of it's official celebration this week.  They started thier festivities by distributing 1000 bikes in their largest Bikes for Kids tour.  And it was the smile on the kids faces that inspire everyone in New Zealand to continue to grow.  Some of their tallies to date also create smiles including 102 Sunshine Coaches, 24 Liberty Swings, over 3000 bikes, 50 Gold Heart Scholarships and over 1900 general grants.  We can't wait to hear about the next 20 years!  Congratulations New Zealand!

Variety of Western Australia, Tent 74 raffled off a charity home recently and raised over $100,000 that is already being put to good use.  With the housing market the way it is in most markets, making kids lives brighter sounds like a good payoff!  See the house and how some of the funds raised have been put to good use already on the VarietyWA web site.

Variety of Western Australia also just hosted the 2010 Kimberley Diamond Variety Bike Run during their Labour Day Long Weekend, February 26 - March 1.  The event covered more than 1,300 kms and highlights included visits and grant presentations to four schools along the way. The event raised a projected $90-100K.  What we're learning is that Australians love long weekends, vehicles of all kinds, and crazy parties.  They're taking their kid-focused mission to heart and raising money being kids... A nice idea!
Variety Western Australia Bike Run

And, so as not to promote just their fun & games, Variety of Western Australia reported on another exciting program going on throughout the year and producing results.  The Variety Ear Bus is the third of its kind provided to the Speech and Hearing Centre by Variety WA.  Indigenous children face such extreme hearing problems in Australia that it is considered a pandemic by the World Health Organization.  Approximately 75% of indigenous children have middle ear infection and disease compared to 35% for non-indigenous children.  The goal of the Ear Bus program is to reduce this rate.  Specialists manning the bus provide children with regular screening, education and referrals for medical intervention. When this program started, 41% of aboriginal children in schools could not pass a routine hearing screen. Preliminary results for the start of 2010 suggest a fairly dramatic 12% improvement from this time last year.  This is encouraging evidence that the Variety Ear Bus is working!  "By improving hearing, we are helping indigenous kids perform and learn better at school, which increases their employment opportunities and thus has a lifelong impact."  The 3rd Ear Bus will focus on visits to more than 1300 indigenous children living in the southern metropolitan suburbs of Perth.   Nice work Western Australia team!

VARIETY - MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Congratulations to Variety, North Texas, Tent 17.  They brought some fun to the lives of hospitalized children and they got some great press that lead to one very happy little boy.

The team recently made an exciting and entertaining contribution to the Pediatric Oncology Department of Methodist Children's Hospital in San Antonio.  Imagine spending a day in bed with a cold, let alone months in a hospital going stir-crazy.  Variety of North Texas decided to make life a little more fun for these patients.  They now have a portable Wii system that can be moved from room to room for a little fun, and movement as Wii players know.  Variety provided a Wii gaming system (complete with: seven games, extra controllers, batteries and a steering wheel) and an XBox 360 (with: six games, extra controllers and batteries), as well as televisions and self-contained rolling carts that would allow the systems to be easily transported from room to room.  We love the idea, and so do the kids!  See their great pictures online.

Also, Tent 17 had a great kick-off to their Gold Heart campaign and managed to attract the attention of the media.  See their great story about a young handicapped boy, Garrett, receiving a special wheelchair at the event.  Then hear the background to the story about how Garrett and Variety were connected due to the great radio coverage they received from their Annual Golf Tournament weekend back in October.  If you've been following our newsletters, you may have heard the original radio segment that lead to a chain reaction.  What a great story.

Thanks for the great kid focused stories Texas.

VARIETY SPOTLIGHT: Jack Cannons AM

Each newsletter, the Variety Spotlight features a key contributor to Variety who makes a difference and inspires others.  In this newsletter we focus our Spotlight on Jack Cannons.

Jack Cannons AMBefore we highlight who Jack is to Variety, we couldn't pass up this chance to provide a dictionary definition of what we heard when compiling information on Jack.  Defn: a "Do-er", always volunteering, amazing, 1st class gentleman, Chairman of Variety Australia, giving since he was a child, a nice bloke.  And truly, as we found when profiling him, a mention of his name brings smiles to people's faces (and emails.)

Jack Cannons is currently the National Chairman and Director of Variety Australia.  You know, that fun-loving group we mentioned in the Events section.  That all seems to blend together as we learned that Jack was introduced to Variety in 1989 and shortly thereafter discovered the crazy world of the Variety Bash Bash - Jack's car(we hope you read the November newsletter when we described the BASH) which he has since participated in as an entrant 27 times in many States of Australia.  The picture of one of his Bash cars seems to put this all in perspective.

In 1994, Jack Cannons AM was appointed a Director of Variety - The Children's Charity for Tent 56 NSW (New South Wales), was Bash Chairman in 2002 and then served as the Chief Barker (Chairman) of Tent 56 from 2003-2006.  He was also the Chairman of the Variety Australia McHappy Committee for 3 years.

In 2006 Jack was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Variety Australia National Board and in 2009 was appointed National Chairman, a role he is still serving and is extremely passionate about.  But don't stop there, Jack also serves on the Variety International Board as Chair of Sunshine Coaches for over 6 years and Chairman of the Operations Committee for 4 years, and is a member of the Variety International Outreach Program.  And these positions just outline his involvement and dedication to Variety, the Children's Charity.

Jack Cannons' decades of service to many protective and charitable organizations have touched the young and old throughout his neighbourhood, country and worldwide.  And not just as a figure-head.  Jack is known for the art of "rolling-up his sleeves and getting the work done."  He doesn't ask without giving; he's a role-model to all.  We spotlight Jack to recognize him for all he gives to Variety and to inspire others.  To those who have had the honour to meet Jack Cannons, your lives have been touched.  To those who have not had the privilege, here's another reason to attend the Variety Worldwide Conference in May and be inspired, motivated, touched.

Some input from some of Jack's admirers:

"In the almost 35 yrs that I've been involved with Variety, I've seen a lot of Chief Barkers come and go.  Some have been wonderful, some less so, but Jack Cannons was one of the wonderful ones.  He brought tremendous energy and enthusiasm to Variety, not only as Chief Barker, but since then in various roles, both within Australian Variety and Internationally.

My greatest delight in Jack's work has been his enthusiasm for remembering that Variety is a Show Business based organisation, something that has been ignored from time to time during our existence in Australia.

Apart from all that, he's a nice bloke who likes a good laugh and I'm proud to call him a friend".

   - Stuart Wagstaff AM

"Jack is to be admired for his untiring contribution to our Charity. As a long time volunteer he has been an irrepressible force on a local and national level. I am personally delighted that Jack now serves as a Vice President on the Variety International Board and that he is responsible for driving the Operations Meetings of Chief Barkers and Executive Directors in our Tents around the World".

   - Grahame Mapp AM, Chairman of the Board,Variety International

Note:  AM = Member of the Order of Australia
