Greetings!
At Home
You Just Never Know What You're Going To Find
May
We're at a loss for words for May.
That will probably make many of you very happy. It's that May is just the most perfect yet the most fragile of months. Its warm sweet breezes pass by way too quickly. They gallop away and before you know it, June is peeking its head around the hot, sticky corner.
May is the month when we really get outside. Hands in the dirt, tomatoes in our future. Long walks at the reservoir or through the woods, feeling the earth come alive and never feeling more alive ourselves.
May is our eternal spring. April fools you. Often cold and wet, it can turn on a dime, something you can so rarely say about May.
In baseball you must always stay focused. Same thing in plumbing. You simply can not leave the job undone. You can't walk away defeated. There are no "nice tries" in baseball and plumbing. There's no sense of satisfaction in finishing second. In baseball and in plumbing there are, to varying degrees, a lot of people counting on you to come through for them. And when you do, the rewards are great.
May is eternal youth. Spring in our step and hope in our hearts.
So much for being at a loss for words. Enjoy your May. And this issue of At Home.

Before 'Pong,' There Was 'Tennis for Two.' Before the era of electronic ping pong, hungry yellow dots, plumbers, mushrooms, and fire-flowers, people waited in line to play video games at roller-skating rinks, arcades, and other hangouts. More than fifty years ago, before either arcades or home video games, visitors waited in line at Brookhaven National Laboratory to play "Tennis for Two," an electronic tennis game that is unquestionably a forerunner of the modern video game. Tennis for Two was first introduced on October 18, 1958, at one of the Lab's annual visitors' days. Two people played the electronic tennis game with separate controllers that connected to an analog computer and used an oscilloscope for a screen. Visitors playing Tennis for Two saw a two-dimensional, side view of a tennis court on the oscilloscope screen, which used a cathode-ray tube similar to a black and white television tube. The ball, a brightly lit, moving dot, left trails as it bounced to alternating sides of the net. Players served and volleyed using controllers with buttons and rotating dials to control the angle of an invisible tennis racquet's swing The game's creator, William Higinbotham, was a nuclear physicist who had worked on the Manhattan Project and lobbied for nuclear nonproliferation as the first chair of the Federation of American Scientists. OK, we didn't know - thought you might like too. Heres a link to the video |
QRs
What the heck are these things?
Well, they're QR Codes (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) and are the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) first designed for the automotive industry. More recently, the system has become popular outside of the industry due to its fast readability and large storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes.
The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be made up of four standardized kinds ("modes") of data (numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, Kanji), or through supported extensions, virtually any kind of data.
Invented by the Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave in 1994 to track vehicles during the manufacturing process, the QR Code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. It was designed to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.
Formerly confined to industrial uses, they have in recent years become common in consumer advertising and packaging, because the dissemination of smart phones "has put a barcode reader in everyone's pocket" for the first time. As a result, the QR code has become a focus of advertising strategy, since it provides quick and effortless access to the brand's website.
Check out the one above. It pays dividends.

May Means Movie Mayhem!
The official summer movie season kicks off with the superhero pile-up The Avengers, which is sure to mind-melt all 10 year olds (and 30 year olds who think they're 10). Tim Burton and Johnny Depp return for the gothic comedy Dark Shadows and it's the U.S. Navy vs. aliens as Battleship guns its way into theaters May 18.
Will Smith returns to the MIB franchise for a third entry which hits theaters over the Memorial Day weekend. June brings the hotly anticipated Prometheus from Ridley Scott, Wes Anderson's star-studded Moonrise Kingdom, and the Tom Cruise-led musical Rock of Ages, based on the smash Broadway production.
July marks the return of the caped crusader in The Dark Knight Rises, a new take on Spiderman, the gritty Oliver Stone drama Savages, and the raunchy teddy bear comedy Ted. In August, one of the summer's biggest question marks -- the remake of Total Recall -- hopes to carve out a piece of the sci-fi-box-office-pie.
The Bourne Legacy looks to continue kicking-butt and The Expendables 2 promises to be more nostalgic fun for action movie junkies. Also look for some smaller titles to fly under the radar, including: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Magic Mike, Lawless, Take this Waltz, Safety Not Guaranteed and Premium Rush.
