Greetings!
At Home
You Just Never Know What You're Going To Find
October
October has arrived.
That means magnificently sunny days and cool crisp nights. It means putting away the shorts, pulling out the sweaters. Putting those air conditioners back in the attic for the winter and turning on the furnace for the first time in five months! It means apple picking and baseball playoffs (Yankees - Red Sox!), raking leaves and raking leaves. It is the very end of summer and the beginning of the end of the year.
It may be the most beautiful month with brilliant foliage surrounding us in beauty and it does feature that one unique night in the year when children arrive at our darkened doors dressed like Ninja Turtles, Zombies or Ariel herself.
October is here. We hope you enjoy it to its fullest.

Tune It or Lose It Chances are you haven't turned on your heating system since the end of April. Surely, on the first cool night of October you'll be down stairs flipping the switch and...hoping for the best.
If you haven't had your system cleaned and tuned in a year - now's the time to make an appointment to do so. Your system will run more efficiently and you'll have the peace of mind knowing that, more than likely, you'll have heat all winter long.
To schedule an appointment say Hello, Aiello at 1.888.479.3420

Halloweeeeeen
According to Wikipedia... Halloween has an interesting history.
Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. The name of the festival historically kept by the Gaels in the British Isles is derived from Old Irish and means roughly "summer's end".
Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween.
Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?"
The word "trick" refers to a (mostly idle) "threat" to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. In some parts of Scotland children still go guising. In this custom the child performs some sort of trick, i.e. sings a song or tells a ghost story, to earn their treats.
The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays dates back to the Middle Ages and includes Christmas wassailing. Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of souling, when poor folk would go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls' Day (November 2). It originated in Ireland and Britain, although similar practices for the souls of the dead were found as far south as Italy. Shakespeare mentions the practice in his comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona (1593), when Speed accuses his master of "puling [whimpering or whining] like a beggar at Hallowmas."
In Scotland and Ireland, Guising - children disguised in costume going from door to door for food or coins - is a traditional Halloween custom, and is recorded in Scotland at Halloween in 1895 where masqueraders in disguise carrying lanterns made out of scooped out turnips, visit homes to be rewarded with cakes, fruit and money. The practice of Guising at Halloween in North America is first recorded in 1911, where a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario reported children going "guising" around the neighborhood.
Here's a surprise, because of the rigid Protestant belief systems that characterized early New England, the celebration of Halloween in colonial times was extremely limited here! Trick-or-treating does not seem to have become a widespread practice until the 1930s, with the first U.S. appearances of the term in 1934, and the first use in a national publication occurring in 1939.

"October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came-
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band."

Discovery TimeWe love blogs. So much so that we started our own - aielloathome.tumblr.com. There are millions of blogs out in the blogosphere but as far as FOOD blogs go we just love this one - food52.com. Amanda and Merrill have created such an inclusive, insightful and simply fun blog - that even if you don't cook - well, you will love it all the same. More to the point, they explain why cooking - for your family - for yourself is so vitally important. Consider: - If you cook, your family will eat dinner together.
- If you cook, you will naturally have a more sustainable household.
- If you cook, you'll set a lifelong example for your children.
- If you cook, you'll understand what goes into food and will eat more healthily.
- If you cook, you'll make your home an important place in your life.
- If you cook, you'll make others happy.
- If you cook, people will remember you.
Is there really a better set of reasons to turn up the gas?

"October is the fallen leaf,
but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen.
It is the distant hills once more in sight
and the enduring constellations
above them once again."

Let's Get to the Root of the ProblemTrees are beautiful this time of year. Except for the part - below ground. Roots! After a summer of active root growth, autumn brings a time when tree roots search deeper and more intently to find the water they need to sustain themselves during the long winter. And that's when you can have problems. If you have trees on your property you can be sure they will seek a way into your pipes. It's as inevitable as the changing leaves. Now's the time to do something about it. To schedule this specially priced Rooter Service mention ROOT11 when you call 888.479.3420 *If your main line is presently clogged there will likely be additional costs. An estimate will be provided prior to any work commencing.

Fall Movies
There is a lot to be excited for this coming fall/winter at your local multiplex.Ryan Gosling is currently tearing up theaters in the neo-noir thrillerDrive, Steven Soderbergh's virus thriller Contagion is still floating around, and the wonderful but poignant "cancer-comedy" 50/50 opened last week. During October, look out for George Clooney's political drama The Ides of March, the Justin Timberlake sci-fi thriller In Time, and updates on Footloose and The Thing.
November brings the visually audacious looking Greek Gods epic Immortals, a new Muppet Movie at Thanksgiving, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar with Leo DiCaprio, and David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method with Viggo Mortensen & Keira Knightley.
Then in December, it's a mix of blockbusters and Oscar-bait: Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Descendants, The Artist, Young Adult, War Horse, The Sitter, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Like we said -- lots to be excited about!

Grounds For Confusion
So the question is - how best to keep it smelling just a whole lot better? Coffee grinds? Lemons? Some people feel that coffee grounds are safe for your disposal, while others think they may clog the pipes. The question is what type of garbage disposal do you have and what kind of plumbing system is installed?
The issue is also whether or not your septic tank can handle the coffee grounds. Other folks like to put lemon and/or orange peels in the disposal - for a fresh citrus smell.
However, you may find that the best way to keep your garbage disposal smelling fresh is to fill the sink at least 2/3rds full with soapy warm water, pull the plug and turn on the garbage disposal. This creates a high-powered suction effect that will keep the disposal clean.
If you feel strongly about using coffee grounds, lemons or hey, chick peas, whatever - check with the manufacturer's recommendations first.

| Make A Difference
There once, recently, was a bus. A Hartford Public Library Book Mobile bus. It was an incredible resource to thousands of people in Hartford who didn't have a local library branch, or who simply couldn't get to the nearest branch because of physical limitations. So the library came to children and seniors and the handicapped and then...it stopped.
The bus was old and needed to be retired.
The Hartford Public Library is working to purchase a new Book Mobile and Aiello Home Services is proud to provide its September Make A Difference grant to the library. We hope that it will inspire others to give so that we can get the new bus rolling in 2012! If you'd like to donate visit their special link here.
Please, we encourage you to nominate your favorite non-profit organization for a $1,000 Make A Difference donation. Click here to do so.

The Last Word
We love the quotes of famous people. From Aristotle to Yogi, there is always a kernel of clarity if not outright truth in their observations. But here's a conundrum given our current economic state of affairs. Our philosophical question of the day: Do you agree with Albert Einstein's statement that, "Imagination is more important than knowledge"? What will elevate us out of the current political and economic quagmire we find ourselves in? Imagination or knowledge? We'd love to hear your thoughts.
Tell us here -and we will make every effort to do just that.
Sincerely,
Stephen Birch
