911 Get Registered for Community Alerts
To register, go to: http://www.hamiltontn.gov/AlertHamiltonCounty/Default.aspx You now have a way to find out if a dangerous situation threatens you or your property in Hamilton County. Starting Monday, February 1 you can sign up for an emergency notification service that will give you instructions on what to do to be safe. The new system is kind of like a weather radio where an alarm sounds, followed by a warning. But this system alerts your phone and lets you know what to do when a dangerous situation threatens your neighborhood.
"The program is called Alert Hamilton County," according to Hamilton County Emergency Services Director Don Allen. Think of it as the 911 system working in reverse. Dispatch supervisors at the Hamilton County 911 District can use a system by a company called 21st Century that sends out up to 60,000 15-second messages per minute by phone. That's 60,000 telephones a minute getting an emergency message. The information gets to you right away as the situation develops. "If we had a life threatening situation for you and your family it's our way of telling you some information," Allen said. "What we need is the number to call you and we need you to register with us." Signing up for the emergency notification system is easy and it is free. Hamilton County has set up a website and all you have to do is provide some very basic information. Your telephone numbers, street and e-mail addresses will be kept confidential and won't be sold to third parties like telemarketers, according to Allen If you don't have a cell phone your land line phone will get a recorded voice message. You will not hear about the typical wreck or house fire. Allen said you will only get an emergency message if there's a situation that requires immediate action. "But something big, spectacular that's getting ready to hit our community," Allen explained. "The Sequoyah nuclear plant is a good example or the pandemic flu is a good example where a lot of people need to be notified in a short period of time." Allen said if you know of someone like a neighbor or family member who doesn't have a computer you can help them by registering them in the system.
Thanks, Dawn Christopher for Sharing this news! With all the flooding in Nashville, TN and surrounding areas, this could be a great thing for local Chattanoogan's to do.
