| Greetings! | |

Can't believe it's already fall but the calendar hasn't taken The Fifth and the probation USC Trojans just blew a game to the Washington Huskies.
So we've got the World Series, the first Tuesday in November Election Day and Halloween coming at us. And let's not forget forget the second TCDC New Patient Extravaganza, Invisalign Days open house, and a special November 7 Walk for Hope.
Dental Assistants Extraordinaire Dani and Kolleen are up to some tricks and treats celebrating October 31. They've promised some totally scary stuff going on just outside the TCDC premises but within eyeball range of visiting patients, sales reps, and all passers by.
The fright designers were inspired by Inner Circle Top Twenty patient/pharmacist Phil Kirkpatrick who observed our tasteful, cute banners, and goblins and exclaimed, "What is this, a pediatric ward??? Any chance we can do "scary"?
So the fountains will be running red and mysterious fog will shroud and atrium full of unsettling, disturbing surprises. So come visit; we bid you welcome...but please stay inside...and do not stray too far into the fog...
Plus, wait till you see what Aunt Clara's been up to! You'll never believe it!
Fight on!
Yours truly,
Dr. V

At risk youth advocacy for 90 years!
|
So on October 9, I ventured out to Cal State Northridge for a look at a project generated from marketing students. The students actually put together competing marketing plans for Rosemary Children's Services (RCS) and there's nothing more inspiring than active, creative young minds. Especially, when the creativity produces a strategy for helping other young folks who haven't experienced many other advantages.
RCS has been in the non-profit business of advocacy for at-risk youth for 90 years in Pasadena. The organization's commitment to youth is surpassed only by its integrity and willingness to taken on even more responsibility.

USC Trojan Probation Football
| |
On October 12, the usual TCDC USC Trojan honk suspects descended on Brookside Park for the latest San Gabriel Valley Trojan Club installment.
This time the honcho guest speaker was new Athletic Director Pat Haden. Haden is a past Rhodes Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa, USC grad who also led the Trojans to two National Championships before playing in the NFL. Haden left a booming business career to become the AD at USC following stiff sanctions handed down by the NCAA. Makes me wonder if ole Pat took a few too many head shots as a player.

We walk for Dani's sister
| |

On November 7, the City of Hope will host its annual Walk for Hope. The Temple City Dental Care crew will attend in big numbers; we hope you'll join us.
The Walk generates an opportunity to raise funds supporting groundbreaking research at the City of Hope as well as awareness of the severity of women's cancers today.
And even though almost all families have suffered loss from women's cancers, this year, the Walk will be even more personal here at TCDC.
Our own Dental Assistant Extraordinaire Dani lost her sister, Dannell, to cancer this past July 17. Dani's family will be walking in Dannell's honor and so will our TCDC family (and I know we'll all be carrying the memory of other loved ones lost.)
Dani's family would love as many of us to participate as possible. In lieu of the suggested donations, simply registering for $25 and sharing the experience would be awesome (of course, if circumstances allow you to donate more, the registration form will provide that opportunity.)
Dannell was the Mother of three and died at the far too young age of 49. What if three people walked for every year of Dannell's life? We'd be raising almost $4000 to help the City of Hope beat cancer.
And I guarantee you'll be inspired just meeting Dani and her family, the Williams.
Please bring along friends and family. Feel free to have fun with the experience. Funny hats, boas, tu-tus, signs are totally encouraged (I will not be wearing a tu-tu this year.)
The Walk for Hope color for 2010 is purple. Purple is the official color of all cancers.
We really hope you'll join us. Please call us at 626/285-3161 for more info or click here to register.
See you on November 7!

Molar Jockey Memoirs.
a book by Dr.V
Excerpt from chapter:
"The Party's Over"
"I sensed my slip-sliding away into a bottomless prehistoric ooze of opinions." ---Uh-oh.
Come on by for your copy of the book! It's actually quite amusing while it's educational!

"When it comes to dental work, I've done it all: cavities filled, root canals (plural!), oral surgery, dental implant. You name it, I've done it.

All of it was torture...until I met Dr. Von Bulow and his awesome staff at TC Dental Care. Dr. Jack is super nice and makes getting that horrible, huge shot not so bad. Everybody from the front office (shout out to my homegirl, Dalila) to the hygienist to the assistants are all friendly and professional. The last time I was there I actually got a paraffin hand treatment to boot! It's actually a pleasure to go to the dentist now! And Dr. Von Bulow's network of USC cronies are top notch as well. Major ups to Dr. Haney and Dr. Ardary."
TCDC Patient: Vivian Chen Thank you Vivian! You are so appreciated!

Doc Mehment Oz screws up...and redeems himself
|
Dr. Oz created quite the stir on casually warning viewers to limit or skip dental x-rays, due to thyroid cancer risk.
These days, protective lead aprons include protective collars for thyroid gland protection. Further, today's traditional and digital radiography create less exposure in a day than 10 minutes time in the SoCal sun.
My article does include some true Dr. Oz words of wisdom regarding oral disease and general health and quality of life. Click here for "Words form the Wizard."
