USC Trojan Corner!

sc photoFollowing the gut-wrenching 16-13 loss to a completely outmanned Washington Huskies team Saturday afternoon (9/19), a team led by former USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, there are far more questions than there are answers at this stage of the Trojans' 2009 campaign. (www.wearesc.com)

So as I'm writing here I'm gonna do my best to hide my frustration over the Trojan's annual loss to a less fortunate team that didn't even belong on the same field (this time the U of Washington Huskies)...but I guess I've failed again.  And maybe I'll just skip the paragraph where I explain what a University of Spoiled Child I remain.

But there's always basketball and September 29 marked another trip to Brookside Park, the USC football home away from home, and another big-time Trojan Club event hosted by illustrious group member Sean Kennally.  Attending were some of the usual USC diehard suspects including ace Ceramist Jedd and a bunch of TCDC patients including Steve and Susie Day, Steve Fernandes, Don Brinegar and Kinesiologist to the elite athletes, Doc Sahara.  We got to meet incoming basketball Coach Kevin O'Neill and ESPN Radio personality Garry Paskwietz.

Look for our new Trojan Football patient referral recognition program where referring a new patient could win you two free Rose Bowl tickets plus dinner for two and the best Italian food in Pasadena.

(Did I already mention the Rose Bowl is USC's home away from home?)
TEAM STAR: We sing Kolleen praises (or is it she sings?)
Kolleen
Ok, I know Kolleen looks way too young to have been a key TCDC player for the last 6 years.  And it's "Singing Dental Assistant" Kolleen because Kolleen is always positive and upbeat...and she sings all the time...even without knowing that many lyrics.

(Photo: Dental assistant extraordinaire Dani, Dr. V., and singing dental assistant Kolleen)

Kolleen came our way from Citrus College here in San Gabriel Valley.  And Kolleen has never stopped learning; she's continued her education all during the six years she's made a big difference for our practice.  If you're a patient, don't be surprised if you receive a handwritten note from Kolleen just when you could use a kind, reassuring word.

Kolleen never hesitates to participate in any of our community projects, is always early, and is quick to volunteer for extra days.  I have a collection of thank you notes from Kolleen.  If you've ever visited TCDC you probably already know that Kolleen's little dog Heath is the apple of her eye.

What you might not know about Kolleen is within months of starting at TCDC, she wound up on Las Vegas' Venetian stage impersonating Wayne Newton in a skit in front of around 1000 people.  Kolleen claims to have been momentarily traumatized by the experience.  And what about Wayne???

Kolleen is a terrific dental assistant who is always positive, energetic and smiling. And I really don't get why some of the other team members refer to Kolleen and me as Heckle and Jeckle?  Click here for Kolleen's video on Jack's YouTube page.
Shout outs for Dr. V and his awesome team!
salute Troy"This is not an over-hyped review.  Dr. Jack is the best dentist you will ever have.  I have referred at least 4 people to TCD and they all feel the same way.  I have had many dental procedures and dentists.  This guy is the real deal.

There are so many great things about TCD, but I'll list my top:
1.  Dr. Jack is extremely nice and thorough.  He takes the time to explain everything to you.  No question is a dumb question.
2.  They use state of the art technology.  I often hear Dr. Jack talking about the importance of continuing education and staying up-to date with the latest practices.
3.  TCD is active in the community and strongly supports philanthropic causes.

I admit, Temple City is a bit far for some folks, but it's worth the trip.  It is so rare nowadays to find friendly and quality care health professionals.

One bad thing....Dr. Jack went to USC, but I'm willing to overlook it.  If you close your eyes during the dental procedures, you won't notice the excessive and shameless display of trojan gear throughout the office." --- Pearl F, South Pasadena.

We were Rock'n on Friday Sept 11th & Saturday Sept 12th
 "Fall back to Fitness" Fundraiser

breakthru2On September 11 and 12 Breakthru Fitness in Pasadena celebrated Fall back to Fitness with all proceeds going to Haven House, the first shelter for victims of domestic violence in the U.S.

Friday night featured refreshments from Magnolia and appetizers from Teri&Yaki, two awesome Pasadena dining establishments.

Breakthru's very own DJ Richie Medina provided the sounds that really got the Zumba dancers moving and grooving on a beautiful Pasadena evening
Saturday morning we came back for three spin classes and more music by Richie.  Breakthru has a spacious patio that overlooks South Lake and has the San Gabriel Mountains as a backdrop.  Dare you to find a setting for staying fit (okay, so I'd rather exercise in Positano if you call eating exercise.)

Haven House collected just under $2,000 and TCDC matched the donations!

Big thanks to owners Michelle and Phil Dozois, plus Giusy Brown for developing their awesome event and supporting Haven House.  You guys rock!!!

Continung Education- a MUST!

bus adI learned long ago about all that big space accounting for everything I didn't know I didn't know.  And maybe that's why 200 hours of continuing education per year is so dang addictive.

And how many folks know one American dies of oral cancer every hour?  Did you realize an oral cancer exam takes about five minutes and doesn't hurt ...at all?  A survey conducted by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research found only around 20% of folks going to the dentist knowing they'd had an oral cancer exam.
We now have the technology to screen any suspicious oral lesion in a matter of several comfortable seconds using a brush biopsy.  The sample is then analyzed by imaging that can find a few atypical cells out of several hundred thousand.  The result is preventive care that saves lives.

Oral cancer is the only form of cancer that has actually increased in the last 50 years.  27% of patients diagnosed with oral cancer do not smoke or use spit tobacco. Please ask friends and family to see their dentist and ask for an oral cancer exam.
oralcdxHelpful website, video and details on The OralCDx® BrushTest®--an easy, painless and definitive way for dentists to test the common small white and red oral spots that most people have in their mouth at one time or another. The OralCDx BrushTest is an oral brush biopsy, and the ONLY non-invasive test for oral pre-cancer and cancer.

What's Up with Aunt Clara?

aunt clara
So, Aunt Clara's broken arm is totally healed up and she's back on the road again going places and seeing people when she's not keeping track of me.

We were both treated to the absolute best ever Tiramisu east or west of Mount Etna by All-World patient/baker Mrs. Tina Chiechi.  Don't even bother telling me you've had better; might as well convince me the bruins take football seriously.
Former Production Manager Aunt Clara's words of wisdom: "If you're gonna do it, do it right and get it out!" (Think Office Manager Dalila's been hangin out a little too much with Aunt Clara.)
