| Greetings! |
Welcome! The team at Temple City Dental has been chomping at the bit to get this PREMIERE ezine out to you! We have been so excited to share our stories and happenings around the office and community that we could barely wait!
So here we are! Check out below our connection with the one and only (good guy) GARTH BROOKS and how we partnered with the megastar to bring smiles to the faces of the underserved youth! Speaking of underserved, our all-time awesome USC football coach, Pete Carroll, has been working hard behind the scenes with his own charity to support a world without violence. I even threw in his terrific "60 Minutes" video link. Watch this --it's pure Carroll.
We have so many fun photos in this issue -- you must stick around and read all the good info here! You have been such a loyal, stellar community for years-- we offer our most sincere appreciation for you, our patients, and dedicate this PREMIERE issue of TCDC to YOU! And let's not forgot to mention all the NEW patients - which we welcome to our family!
We know home is where the heart is and we have our hearts in the right place - right here in our dental home :) So, please enjoy our new monthly ezine and learn how we make dentistry FUN (or I wouldn't do it!)
Yours truly,
Dr. V

| Smiles for Life Campaign |
Our twelfth annual Smiles for Life campaign began March 1st and ended June 30. We proudly raised $7,200! Once again, we provided whiter, brighter smiles that resulted in proceeds going to charity. For the past seven years, our favorite Country singer, Garth Brooks and his "Teammates for Kids" organization, has partnered up with our national dental organization, the Crown Council, to help raise funds for children in the areas of health, education, and the Inner city. Hey, we even have the pictures in the waiting room to prove we're pretty tight with Garth.
This is truly a win-win for everyone. You see, 50% of the proceeds benefit Garth Brooks' non-profit and the other 50% goes to a charity of our choice.
This year our local nonprofit of choice was USC Coach Pete Carroll's A Better LA. Of course, we didn't mind having another excuse for hanging up some more USC stuff in the office! The organization is committed to supporting Los Angeles communities to reduce violence by empowering change. Their first target area is in South Los Angeles. See below for more info on Better LA and Pete Carroll on 60 Minutes!

| Molar Jockey Memoirs! |
Making Dentistry Fun! "Okay, I know, you think I'm nuts. How does anyone make dentistry fun? It's all in the context, baby. Back in the day before I had any glimmer about team building..." (excerpt from Jack's book. Ask for copies in the office) |

| A Better L.A. with USC Coach Pete Carroll |
We've developed a relationship with A Better LA CEO Brian Center and hope to continue our support of an awesome life-saving organization. A Better LA hopes to mobilize the community to inspire each person to dream, work, and play without fear. Please check out a few pics of Twin Tower of Hygiene Jen, Doc "of the elite athletes" Darrick Sahara, Coach Pete, and yours truly from our 2009 event.
*Out of some 800 participating dental practices, TCDC finished in the top 50 fundraisers. Check out this GREAT interview of Coach Pete Carroll on 60 Minutes! Click here. |
| USC Trojan Corner! |
Okay, so we're all totally psyched about the upcoming USC football season. Is there any way not to expand the TCDC USC Trojan Shrine? Don't know what to say about former USC basketball coach Tim Floyd other than his bizarre departure (along with that of most of scholarship players) has given me big-time hope for a seats upgrade at the Galen Center. (Photo: Dani, Kolleen, Dalila, and Jen with USC Football player Desmond Reed at the Temple City Chamber Awards Banquet)
We worked with former Temple City High School/USC football great Desmond Reed over at the Arcadia Chamber Business Expo held at the Westfield Mall. Desmond helped us access Pete Carroll-autographed USC football gear for our raffle. If you've followed my Molar Jockey column in the Temple City Tribune at all, please know I haven't given up on Coach Pete Carroll developing a new nonprofit geared to help out the dismal TC business district. If Pete can come up with A Better LA why not A Better TC? |
| Continung Education- a MUST! |
Okay, so we might be the all-time continuing education nerds but how can ya help it? I even loved high school English for cryin' out loud! The California dental board requires 50 hours of continuing education every two years. We average more than 200 hours per year. We just attended the Invisalign Summit in Las Vegas. The Summit brings out the best in Invisalign educators and clinicians. Think I was recruited because of my deadly tennis crosscourt backhand return. And I know I've shared I think Invisalign, the orthodontic approach without braces, is easily the coolest technology I've seen in my career. Call our office for our $500 rebate on Invisalign! 626.285.3161. Just back, OM Dalila and I flew to Boston for Dr. Tom Orent's SuperConference. Dr. Tom is a great source for all the business info we never received in dental school. So I've never been to Boston. Love the Celtics; despise the Red Sox. No reason to believe I'm not gonna love the food. |
| Oral Cancer Awareness at the Epicenter! |
|
What an awesome night at the ballpark! And what an opportunity to thank everyone involved in our June 20th trip to see Rancho Cucamonga's Quakes battle the Lake Elsinore Storm. The Quakes are the Gold Standard as hosts. And the 200 TCDC attendees were the Gold Standard for fun. Thanks for helping us celebrate another year of Oral Cancer Awareness! So the Quakes got skunked by the Storm 10-1 but what about those fireworks! One American an hour dies of oral cancer. 25% of those diagnosed with oral cancer do not smoke or use spit tobacco. A thorough oral cancer exam takes less than 5-minutes. |
| OM Dalila is OUR All-Star Girl! |
Bet you didn't know OM (office mgr) Dalila can really bowl? Back in June, Dalila averaged over 200 and won her division in a Las Vegas tourney.
(That's Dalila enjoying our Boston Italian North End visit last week--way fun!)
Dalila also holds the title of Super Mom for daughter Ashley and son Andrew (both attend Bishop Amat High.) Dalila is coach, mentor, motivational guru, and loving, listening Mom 24/7. Andrew earned a Varsity letter in swimming as a Ninth Grader and Godchild Ashley is the kind of scholar that will probably make her my next lawyer. Dalila has been a cornerstone for our practice and celebrated her 10th year with TCDC back in November of 2008. Back in '98, it took me all of about 3-minutes to figure out Dalila was smart; it sealed the deal when she shared the importance of being part of team. And it didn't hurt that both Dalila and I actually attended Mark Keppel High School (Dalila is always quick to mention I matriculated decades before she arrived.)
Dalila is a powerhouse. She began her career at TCDC having never worked in dentistry. It wasn't long before Dalila got her x-ray license even though her duties were administrative. Today, Dalila can take x-rays and impressions with the best of 'em even though she is now Office Manager (Having taken on the duties of Appointment Coordinator and Financial Coordinator following the retirement of long time team member Diane.) |
| Our "Haven House" www.havenhouse.org |
For the past six years, I've served on the Board of Directors for Haven House of Pasadena, the first shelter for victims of domestic violence in the U.S. Thought I had been term-limited out but thanks to a bylaws amendment looks like I'm back on the Board for another two years. An uncertain economy has created challenges for us all and nonprofits are no exception. One challenge will be the retirement of Executive Director of 20 years Sheila Halfon and a budget that will conform to the times in which we live. What's really exciting is the way the Haven House staff has embraced the opportunity to create, contribute, and commit to retaining the Haven House stance as an innovative leader. If any readers have a passion to make a difference for folks by having a say in stopping generational violence and fear, please give me a call at 626-285-3161 We're hungry for volunteers and committed Board members. |
| What's Up with Aunt Clara? |
I'm sure most of you have heard about my amazing, beloved Aunt Clara. Aunt Clara was born when Archduke Franz Ferdinand still had a pulse. At a spry 96 years old, Aunt Clara is sharp as a tack! She still drives, takes care of her own home, does my laundry, and refuses to let me off probation.
Aunt Clara was a production manager in the garment industry when most folks her age count Bingo as physical exercise. Aunt Clara has always been extremely opinionated and never stingy about sharing. And that's what's up with Aunt Clara.
Aunt Clara recommendation #1:
"If you don't like doing something for a living, don't do it. You'll probably stink at it anyway. Life's too short." And (the bonus), "If you have something to complain about, speak up and have a solution! | |
