Swarthmore Fun Run - Every Wednesday - Our Most Attended Fun Run! |
31 runners and walkers joined up at the Swarthmore Fun Run last night. It was a beautiful evening. So beautiful that I'm surprised we didn't have more runners. 20 people came out to Swarthmore Pizza afterwards for good food and laughs. Remember, you don't have to run to join us for dinner. Come on out and join in the fun. All abilities are welcome both to the run and to eat.

Marathon Runners Face Low Risk of Cardiac Arrest
|
NPR's Health Blog
Kristofor Husted
Running long-distance races isn't going to hurt your heart any more than other vigorous sports, researchers say. Just make sure you're fit enough to attempt the feat in the first place.
In the past decade, nearly 11 million runners participated in long-distance races, but only 59 suffered cardiac arrests, according to findings just published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Most of the cases happened to be in runners with undiagnosed, pre-existing heart problems.
"Certainly doing the run didn't cause the heart conditions," study author Dr. Aaron Baggish tells Shots, "but it was probably the stimulus that caused the near-fatal or fatal event." For the study, Baggish, associate director of the Cardiovascular Performance Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, compiled data on runners in marathons (26.2 miles) and half-marathons (13.1 miles) as far back as 2000.
The average age of runners whose hearts stopped beating was 42. Most were men. A condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or a thickening of the heart muscle, was the underlying condition leading to cardiac arrest in many of the younger people. And those heart stoppages are tougher to overcome with CPR, Baggish says. Older runners tended to have underlying coronary heart disease, which, he says, leads to a type of cardiac arrest that responds better to CPR. The study also shows that cardiac arrest cases in races are on the rise, especially in men. Baggish attributes this to an increase of participation in marathons and half-marathons - doubling in the past 10 years - and the male predisposition for cardiac arrest. "Recently more and more folks that have a history of being sedentary and even having heart disease or heart risk factors are turning to the sport to improve their health," he says. "These are the people who are probably most at risk." All told, 42 of the 59 people who had cardiac arrests died during the race or at the hospital after being taken there. That translates to about 1 death per 259,000 runners. For collegiate athletes, the sudden death rate is 1 per 43,770, researchers say. For triathletes, it's 1 per 52,630. The mortality rate for marathoners and half-marathoners is about 20 percent lower than the rate for typical cardiac arrest cases that happen outside hospitals, the report says. Baggish says that the survivors of race-related cardiac arrests got immediate, bystander-initiated CPR. Among people who died, less than half of got CPR. "This means that if a cardiac arrest occurs, the only real way of ensuring a chance of survival is for the people that witnessed the event to start CPR immediately," he says. Although the cardiac-arrest risk is low, Baggish says people should get checked out by a doctor before tackling a long-distance run - even if they're young. "The deal is that exercise is really quite protective, but it's not completely protective," he says. "If you're destined to have a problem, it's most likely to occur while you're actually exercising."

Trail Running at the Haverford Reserve
|
The first 2012 Thirsty Thursday Trail run will be June 14th. Runs are ususally every Thursday night at 6:30PM. On that night the new Haverford Community Center will be having a grand opening at 7pm. I thought it would be great to get out there and show our support. Get out, run a bit and then we all could take a tour of the new building. Next week only, it might be a good idea to get there at 6pm so that you have plenty of time to run and then follow the tour.
We will meet at the Haverford Reserve in the Freedom Playground Parking lot (just above the turf field).
For all of those who have not seen the inside of this building it is nothing short of amazing!
If you know someone that enjoys running please forward this on to them. Feel free to email me with any questions.
Thanks,
See you then.

Runner helps hurt opponent finish race.
|
There was some outstanding sportsmanship displayed at the Ohio state track meet last Saturday.
Meghan Vogel, a junior at West Liberty-Salem High School in Ohio, won the state's Division III 1,600 meter race, but she gained more attention for a race in which she finished last.
(see video here - http://www.yardbarker.com/high_school/articles/msn/high_school_runner_meghan_vogel_helps_carry_injured_opponent_across_finish_line_video/10941581)
Vogel was running the 3,200 meter race and about 50 meters from the finish line when she saw Arden McMath, a sophomore from Arlington High School, collapse. Instead of passing her, Vogel stopped to carry her competitor across the finish line.
Race rules say Vogel should have been automatically disqualified for helping another runner, but the Springfield News-Sun says meet management took no action. They gave McMath 14th place and a finishing time of 12:29.90, and Vogel 15th in 12:30.24. Vogel made sure McMath crossed the finish line first because she had been ahead of her.
"Helping her across the finish line was a lot more satisfying than winning the state championship," Vogel told the News-Sun.
"What a selfless act," said Arlington coach Paul Hunter. "She could have just gone around Arden. But she chose to help. I've never seen that at a state meet. That's real sportsmanship."
We've seen other outstanding acts of sportsmanship in track and cross country before, and this ranks right up there. It's great to have a heartwarming story like this to balance out all the negative ones we see in high school athletics.
Well done Meghan, well done.

June 3rd - Travels with Charlie: In Search of America by John Steinbeck. 1980.
Travels with Charley: In Search of America is a travelogue written by American author John Steinbeck. It recounts tales of a 1960 road trip with his French standard poodle, Charley, around the United States. He wrote that he was moved by a desire to see his country on a personal level, since he made his living writing about it. He wrote of having many questions going into his journey, the main one being, "What are Americans like today?" However, he found that the "new America" did not live up to his expectations. Steinbeck tells of traveling throughout the United States in a specially-made camper he named Rocinante, after the horse of Don Quixote. His travels start in Long Island, New York, and roughly follow the outer border of the United States, from Maine to the Pacific Northwest, down into his native Salinas Valley in California, across to Texas, up through the Deep South, and then back to New York. Such a trip encompasses nearly 10,000 miles. According to Thom Steinbeck, the author's oldest son, the real reason for the trip was that Steinbeck knew he was dying and wanted to see his country one last time. Thom says he was surprised that his stepmother (Steinbeck's wife) allowed Steinbeck to make the trip; because of his heart condition he could have died at any time.
