Hello Delco RRC

Have something interesting to add to the email?  Forward it to me at info@delcorrc.com.  Thanks to those that always give me support.

You're running on guts. On fumes. Your muscles twitch. You throw up. You're delirious. But you keep running because there's no way out of this hell you're in, because there's no way you're not crossing the finish line. It's a misery that non-runners don't understand.

Martine Costello - runner and author

With this quote in mind: Okay, so I don't expect this at every Fun Run or any Fun Run for that matter, I don't think it would be very fun.  But, there are those of you out there that have been to the point mentioned above and you made it or maybe you didn't.  You know the feeling of giving up and it isn't a feeling you ever want to feel again.  But to have put yourself at that point is more than most will ever have the courage to even try.  So if you completed or not, I applaud you. Come join us at one of our many Fun Runs, even if you do throw up, we'll still invite you back.

40th Anniversary Run

This past Monday members of the club decided to hold a run to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the founding of our club.  This just happened to coincide with our normal Monday night Fun Run at the Ridley Y.

A record 19 people turned out for the club's 40th anniversary run on Monday Feb.27 from the Ridley YMCA, including Scott Thornton, age 52.  Scott had run during the club's first year fun-runs in Springfield at age 12. He came out with his daughter-in-law Kristen Thornton. Photo attached.
About 20 people had dinner together afterwards at Barnaby's and each reminisced about how they began running with the club.

People in photo:
Back row, L to R:  Katie Douglas, Jim Bencrowski, Davin Mundy, Diane Rowe, Bob Zwaan, Bill Weber, Kelly OBrien, Chris Begley
Front Row, L to R:  Jen Sacher, Paul Belferman, Mike Nichols, Chrissy Ribble, Mary Beth Mundy, Byron Mundy, Brianne Danner

Swarthmore Fun Run - Every Wednesday

17 runners and walkers were out last night at the Swarthmore Fun Run. 14 people came out to Swarthmore Pizza afterwards for good food and laughs.  Remember, you don't have to run to join us for dinner.  Come on out and join in the fun.  All abilities are welcome.

Spring Fling - DELCO RRC - Saturday 4/21

With Spring just around the corner, it is almost time for our annual Delco RRC Spring Fling.  This year will be extra special as we will be celebrating our 40th anniversary.

The Spring Fling will be at Generations restaurant in Media on Saturday, April 21 at 6:30.  It will be a buffet dinner with a cash bar or you may bring your own wine.  The entertainment for the evening will be a murder/mystery dinner titled "Mummy Dearest."

Please join us for this fun filled evening.  You can click the link below to register before April 17.

Delaware County Council Honors Delco RRC

Media Council

At its regular public meeting on Wednesday morning February 29, The Delaware County Council honored our running club for " promoting running as a way of staying healthy and building a sense of community" as we celebrated our 40th anniversary. Byron Mundy was congratulated for being the club's founder and staying active since 1972. About 20 club members attended the presentation- see attached photo.
Byron thanked council for its resolution commending the club and himself, but he pointed out that hundreds of individuals had also contributed equal (or more) time and energy over the past 40 years to make the club a success. The recognition should go to them, too.
Pictured in the photo- back row L to R: Dean Dennis, Kelly O'Brien, Bill Weber, Mario Civera, Tom McGarrigle, Colleen Morrone. Front Row L to R: Bill Kracht, Paul Isaac, Marcy Harper, Shirley Weber, John McBlain, Byron Mundy, Mary Beth Mundy, Diane Lista, Chrissy Ribble, Carrie McGoldrick, Fiona McGoldrick, and Jack Bryson. Attending but not in photo: Chris McGoldrick, Heinz Wick, and Marianne Grace.

The Tyler Trail Race has SOLD OUT.  This is the 4th year in a row the race has sold out and this is the earliest ever that it has happened.  Thanks to Race Director John Greenstine for making this happen. The proof of his hard work and dedication is shown in the numbers and the early sell out date.

Baked goods (home made or store bought) are needed to serve the volunteers and runners.  If you like to bake and wish to donate your time and baking skills, please contact Shirley Weber at

weber720@comcast.net.

Volunteers to work the course are also needed.  If interested, please contact Denise Burgese at d.nise@verizon.net

Collingdale 5K - Support Requested

One of our club members, Paul Isaac is directing a race in Collingdale this April 15th.  He is looking for support to help make this a great event for Collingdale.  Collingdale used to have races years ago so its nice to see this event making a come back.  Volunteers are needed for registration, handing out t-shirts, course marshalls and water stations.  I'm sure others will be needed so you'll be seeing this request again.

Paul is also looking for volunteers to be on the Race Committee.  Help him with doing some of the typical work that is needed in putting a race on.  Helping with enlisting Sponsors, Ordering T-shirts and Award Medals/Trophies, etc.

The race is posted on our web site so if you don't want to volunteer and want to run (or do both), the info is there for you.

Reach out to Paul at 484-540-7192 or pauljisaac@yahoo.com.

Happy Birthday!!!

Book Club

Next meeting will be Mar 4th at 2PM.  It will be held at Bill and Deb's home, 621 Sutton Avenue, Folsom, 19033.  Below is a list of the next six books that will be discussed in 2012.

Mar 4th - The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman. 2011.  The Red Garden introduces us to the luminous and haunting world of Blackwell, Massachusetts, capturing the unexpected turns in its history and in our own lives.
In exquisite prose, Hoffman offers a transforming glimpse of small-town America, presenting us with some three hundred years of passion, dark secrets, loyalty, and redemption in a web of tales where characters' lives are intertwined by fate and by their own actions.
From the town's founder, a brave young woman from England who has no fear of blizzards or bears, to the young man who runs away to New York City with only his dog for company, the characters in The Red Garden are extraordinary and vivid: a young wounded Civil War soldier who is saved by a passionate neighbor, a woman who meets a fiercely human historical character, a poet who falls in love with a blind man, a mysterious traveler who comes to town in the year when summer never arrives.
At the center of everyone's life is a mysterious garden where only red plants can grow, and where the truth can be found by those who dare to look.
Beautifully crafted, shimmering with magic, The Red Garden is as unforgettable as it is moving.

Emily and Einstein by Linda Francis Lee. 2011.

Travels with Charlie: In Search of America by John Steinbeck. 1980.

Look at Me by Jennifer Egan. 2002.

Knockemstiff by Donald Ray Pollack. 2008.
