Hello Delco RRC |
Have something interesting to add to the email? Forward it to me at info@delcorrc.com. Thanks to those that always give me support.
Good news: It's a leap year. You can run 366 days.
"There's no magic to running far or climbing Everest. Endurance is mental strength. It's all about heart."
Bear Grylls - Host of Man vs. Wild
With this quote in mind: You haven't run in a while or feel you run too slowly to come out and run with the club. Well, you don't. Every one of us in the club took that first step and came out to a run or came back to a run. Why don't you do the same? Besides, we are not asking you to climb Mt Everest or run far but if you want to, you will find the support here. You might not find it at home, but there is and are people here that will support you. Come join us at one of our many Fun Runs, it just might be what gives you the confidence to try your first 5K or ultra marathon. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Swarthmore Fun Run - Wednesday |
26 runners and walkers were out last night braving the elements at the Swarthmore Fun Run. The light snowfall made for a beautiful run. 15 people came out to Swarthmore Pizza afterwards for good food and laughs. Come on out and join in the fun. All abilities are welcome.

Bench for Dot Kracht |
The bench DelcoRRC purchased to honor Dot Kracht has been installed at Ridley Creek State Park. It is at the junction where the 4.3 mile loop turns up the hill toward Tyler Arboretum. (at the point closest to Rt 353). I would like to thank all who donated for the bench and in particular anyone who has not yet received a Thank You note . We are now waiting for the Plaque to be installed.

Long Runs and Social Networking |
Thanks for your suggestions on how to get information out about long runs. For now, I am going to stick to email and the Message Board on our web site. If you are interested in doing long runs, check out the message board at www.delcorrc.com/messages.asp. I'll post the info as soon as I know it is going to happen. I can also get your name on an email list that is sent out by a group that runs long almost every weekend at an 8:30 - 9:15 minute pace. I joined them this week at Lloyd Hall on Kelly Drive in Philly and had a nice long run. Some of us started earlier then others and got 20 miles in while others did between 12 and 15. Others do long runs every Saturday from Media and sometimes Sunday morning from Springfield. Its much more fun training for long runs with others so feel free to come out and train, and run that marathon you never even knew you wanted to run.
Thanks
Bill

Delco RRC 40th Anniversary |
Today I attended a county council meeting to follow up on my and Christine Reuther's request of 02/01/2012 to recognize Byron Mundy and the Delaware County Road Runners Club on its 40th anniversary which occurs 02/27/2012. I met with some members of the board afterward and they would like to recognize Byron and our club at their Wednesday 02/29/2012 meeting at 10am. The meeting will be held in the County Council Meeting Room in the Media Borough Courthouse 201 West Front Street, Media, PA 19063. They plan to present certificates and take photos. The meetings run efficiently and today's was over by 10:45. In addition to Byron and our current club president, Diane Lista, they have invited as many of the club members that would like to attend the meeting. They do understand that the time of the meeting might conflict with the workday but they have to do the recognition in the course of an actual meeting which are Wednesdays at 10am. They have asked that we extend an invitation to all of our club members in hopes that some might be available. Thanks!

Collingdale 5K - Support Requested
|
One of our club members, Paul Isaac is directing a race in Collingdale this April 15th. He is looking for support to help make this a great event for Collingdale. Collingdale used to have races years ago so its nice to see this event making a come back. Volunteers are needed for registration, handing out t-shirts, course marshalls and water stations. I'm sure others will be needed so you'll be seeing this request again.
Paul is also looking for volunteers to be on the Race Committee. Help him with doing some of the typical work that is needed in putting a race on. Helping with enlisting Sponsors, Ordering T-shirts and Award Medals/Trophies, etc.
The race is posted on our web site so if you don't want to volunteer and want to run (or do both), the info is there for you.
Reach out to Paul at 484-540-7192 or pauljisaac@yahoo.com.

You're in a rut, and you can't get unstuck.Motivation is a resource that seems harder and harder to come by these days. You're mired in malaise, you're unexcited after a slump or a break, you're in a dull 9-to-5 routine.
Any of these sound familiar?
If so, you're not alone. I've been in these kinds of ruts, often, and sometimes for embarrassingly extended periods. While it doesn't happen much these days, as I'm excited about everything I do, I'm no stranger to the rut. I was stuck in one for a couple years once, until I felt the rut wasn't something I was in, but was me.
What is the way out? How do you start along this way if you don't have motivation to start with?
I've found that the best way out of a rut is with the smallest step possible. But that step can result in more than you realize.
What if that smallest step is to announce a major challenge? In my recent past I've announced 30 days of yoga, writing a novel in 30 days, and some grueling physical challenges. In years past I've announced that I'm going to run a marathon, do a triathlon, start a blog, give up my car, give up meat, and so on.
Here's the thing: the first step wasn't to take on a major challenge. It was simply announcing it. And announcing something is really really easy. Doing it is much harder, but once you've announced it, you have some momentum, and you're committed to a direction. Making the announcement only takes the moving of your lips and some hot air, or the typing of your fingers while your email program is open, and let's face it, you do those things even when you're in a rut.
What if the moving of your fingers or some hot air is too big a step? Can you take an even smaller step? Sure: you can simply ask, "What if?"
What if you took on a challenge? What if you cleared the clutter from your desk? What if you went outside for a brisk walk? What if you quit your job and headed for southeast Asia with nothing but a small backpack? What if you started a blog about your biggest passion? What if you decided to paint a picture or snap a photograph every single day for the next month? What if you did 5 minutes of yoga each morning? What if you tossed out your to-do list and only did 1 important thing each day before doing the less important tasks? What if you proposed your dream project to your boss? What if you stopped asking permission and just started doing what you've been wanting to do? What if your life was a blank slate and you could fill it with only the things you love? What if you could change someone else's life? What if you tossed out all your excuses? What if you were grateful for what you have, instead of complaining about what you don't have? What if you tossed out your goals? What if you let go of your expectations? What if you got rid of everything you had?
What if is a very easy step.
Take the easiest step you can imagine. Once you start moving, you'll feel unbelievably better. Once your foot touches ground, you will feel the power of the earth, you'll feel the power of motion, you'll feel the rut moving behind you. That one step - it's a doozy.

Book Club |
Next meeting will be Mar 4th at 2PM. It will be held at Bill and Deb's home, 621 Sutton Avenue, Folsom, 19033. Below is a list of the next six books that will be discussed in 2012.
Mar 4th - The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman. 2011. The Red Garden introduces us to the luminous and haunting world of Blackwell, Massachusetts, capturing the unexpected turns in its history and in our own lives. In exquisite prose, Hoffman offers a transforming glimpse of small-town America, presenting us with some three hundred years of passion, dark secrets, loyalty, and redemption in a web of tales where characters' lives are intertwined by fate and by their own actions. From the town's founder, a brave young woman from England who has no fear of blizzards or bears, to the young man who runs away to New York City with only his dog for company, the characters in The Red Garden are extraordinary and vivid: a young wounded Civil War soldier who is saved by a passionate neighbor, a woman who meets a fiercely human historical character, a poet who falls in love with a blind man, a mysterious traveler who comes to town in the year when summer never arrives. At the center of everyone's life is a mysterious garden where only red plants can grow, and where the truth can be found by those who dare to look. Beautifully crafted, shimmering with magic, The Red Garden is as unforgettable as it is moving. Emily and Einstein by Linda Francis Lee. 2011. Travels with Charlie: In Search of America by John Steinbeck. 1980. Look at Me by Jennifer Egan. 2002. Knockemstiff by Donald Ray Pollack. 2008. |
