" Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude."
Thomas Jefferson With this quote in mind: Come join us at one of our many Fun Runs. Or woman for that matter. A good way to achieve your goals or to adjust your attitude is to join your friends for a run. I hope to see you adjusting soon. |
Swarthmore Fun Run - Wednesday |

Something for the Ladies? |
Ladies, do you need an incentive to go jogging? How about Ridley Park (the town, not the park)?
"When I heard one morning last week that Cooper was shooting a scene by Ridley Lake I could stand it no more. I had to go Bradley-hunting myself! I arrived to find Shaw Road in Ridley Park full of trailers and equipment. The crew was filming Bradley in a jogging scene, as he ran up and down Hilltop Rd., near the Haverford Rd. bridge. Most of the crew looked pretty bored as they endured monotonous take after take of the actor running the same distance. But the neighbors were another whole story- they were stoked!"

That's right, Bradley Cooper in Ridley Park!!! Hey, whatever works and gets you out on the road. The whole article can be read at the link below.

Volunteers are needed for this Saturday's Women's Distance Run and Delco Cross Country Championships. Please help out if you can. Volunteers for the WDF are asked to be there by 9am but earlier would be better as there are course set-up needs and course marshalls that will need to be placed. Registration help will also be needed. If you can't volunteer, how about running the race?
The Cross Country Championships start at 1pm and volunteers are needed to be there by noon. Everyone is welcome to run the Alumni race prior to the start of the meet. This is a good and very challenging 5K cross-country course.

Woman gives birth after running Chicago Marathon |
By SOPHIA TAREEN - Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) - Amber Miller felt contractions just minutes after crossing the finish line at the Chicago Marathon. A few hours later, the suburban Chicago woman - who slogged her way through 26.2 miles while nearly 39 weeks pregnant - delivered a healthy baby girl.
"For me, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. I was running up until that point anyway," Miller told The Associated Press in an interview from the hospital where she was recovering Monday. "I am crazy about running."
Sunday's marathon was the eighth for the 27-year-old, who has been running for more than a dozen years. She found out she was pregnant with her second child days after signing up for the Chicago race and decided to play it by ear on whether or not she would run.
When the baby hadn't been born by Sunday, she got clearance from her doctor to run half. She completed it with a with a half-run half-walk approach, drinking lots of fluids and eating a lot along the way. She finished in 6:25:50, much slower than her usual marathon time, but still content.
"Lots of people were cheering me on: 'Go pregnant lady!'" she said. "I was expecting some negative comments. I don't remember anything."
It was not Miller's first marathon while pregnant.
In May, the Westchester woman ran the Wisconsin Marathon in 4:23:07 while 17 weeks pregnant with her daughter. In 2009, she ran the Indianapolis Marathon in 4:30:27 while she was 18 weeks pregnant with her son Caleb, who's 1.
Elite runners have trained while pregnant, but doctors say Miller is a rarity. She was 38 weeks and five days pregnant. Full-term is typically defined as 40 weeks.
Marathon world-record holder Paula Radcliffe ran 14 miles a day while pregnant and resumed training weeks after the birth of her first child. She won the New York City Marathon in 2007 just 10 months after delivery. American marathoner Kara Goucher, who gave birth to her son last year, also trained while pregnant, running 80 miles a week at times.
"It's probably the rare woman who is in good enough shape to run a marathon while pregnant. It's probably the exception more than the rule," said Dr. Priya Rajan, an assistant professor in obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
Medical guidelines generally say that if a woman was a runner and healthy before she got pregnant, running during pregnancy is fine. Doctors even recommend exercise for low-risk pregnancies. However, medical experts agree that pregnancy is not the time to begin any exercise endeavors, such as starting marathon training for the first time. For pregnant runners, close monitoring by a doctor is recommended.
Miller who was looking forward to getting rest, said she the only effects she felt from the marathon, which she finished around 3:30 p.m., were blisters on her feet. She was just happy to see her daughter June, who was born at 10:29 p.m. at 7 pounds, 13 ounces with no complications.
If she had to do the whole day over?
"Definitely again," she said. "It'll be a story to remember.".

Marathon runner caught bus to the finish line |
| Not the bus but close enough |
By Anita Singh in The Telegraph - England
Rob Sloan claimed third place in the Kielder Marathon after completing the 26.2 mile course in an impressive time of 2:51:00.
But suspicions were raised by fellow runners bemused that they had not seen Sloan pass them during Sunday's race.
After initially denying any wrongdoing, Sloan admitted to hopping onto a bus at the 20-mile mark because he was feeling tired. He then re-emerged from a wooded area of the course and picked up the bronze medal. Witnesses reported seeing him hide behind a tree until the first and second placed runners went past, then rejoining the race behind them.
The 31-year-old now faces dismissal from his club, Sunderland Harriers, and could be banned from taking part in future marathons.
Steve Cram, the former world record holder and organiser of the race in Kielder Water, Northumberland, said: "He was the only runner in the whole of the race who ran the second half quicker than the first half."
Sloan, a former Army mechanic from Downhill, Sunderland, was seen boasting to reporters minutes after completing the event. He described the race as "absolutely, unbelievably tough".
When his placing was brought into doubt, he was indignant.
"I'm upset and angry that someone wants to cast these aspersions. It's laughable, is what it is," he insisted.
However, after organisers launched an investigation, he confessed to hitching a ride.
The bus was one of 12 laid on to ferry spectators around the lakeside course, which has been dubbed "Britain's most beautiful marathon".
A statement from the organisers said: "The athlete who was disqualified on Sunday after initially placing third has admitted that he failed to complete the whole course of 26.2 miles.
"Rob Sloan of Sunderland Harriers had apparently made the decision to withdraw from the race at approximately 20 miles due to fatigue and after returning to the Leaplish Park area he decided to run the closing section of the course and crossed the finish line in third place.
"This was rightly questioned by several witnesses including the rightful third place finisher, Steven Cairns of Peebles, Scotland, who has been awarded the prize."
Sloan won a 10k race on Saturday and that result appears to hold firm.
He joined Sunderland Harriers a few months ago. Ann Lillie, club treasurer and vice-president, said: "It's a bit of a shock. We have a good reputation and obviously this has brought the club into disrepute.
"It's not the kind of advertising we need. We'll be discussing Rob's future when the executive committee meets next week."
The runner later awarded the bronze medal, Steven Cairns, was one of those who shared their suspicions with organisers.
Writing on Facebook, he said: "I was third the whole way but somehow I crossed the line and was given fourth! He has stolen my glory and my moment on the podium.
"I started to doubt myself as he was adamant he had gone past me. I could understand him taking the goody bag and the t-shirt but to do the press interview claiming he was third..."
In 2009, Anthony Gaskell, 69, became the fastest pensioner to run the London Marathon when he finished in a record three hours and five minutes.
However, it emerged later that he took a short cut that knocked 10 miles off the course and his name was removed from the results.young by joining us on one of our many Fun Runs and make new friends. |
