"Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it."
Michael Jordan With this quote in mind: Come join us at one of our many Fun Runs. As you'll see further down in this email (Labor Pain), obstacles can be overcome, you just need to be determined and to believe you can do it. You'll find people like this throughout our Club, be a part of that and add your own story. |

Its September! Have you renewed for 2011?
If your name is on the list below, you haven't yet renewed your Delco RRC membership for 2011. Its easy to renew and its important for the club. You can print the form from the following link to our website, http://www.delcorrc.com/forms/2011%20Delcorrc%20Membership%20Form.pdf. You can give your completed form to someone at any club event or mail it to Delco RRC, PO Box 1811, Media, PA 19063.
There is no charge unless you want to make a tax deductible donation, which the club does appreciate. We hope that you find the club worthwhile and that you will renew. The club is required to keep a count of its members for insurance purposes and the count affects the premium we are charged. So there is no value to either you or the club in keeping you on the membership list if you don't want to be there. We hope you renew but we need your completed application by October 8 or you won't be receiving the club email the following Thursday. You don't want to hurt Bill's feelings by dropping off his distribution list, do you?
Please renew! We hope to see you at a club event in the near future.

For those of you who don't know, the Labor Pain was this weekend. It is a 12 hour endurance trail run. You have the choice to run solo (which Bill McGurk and I did), or to run as part of a relay. The Delco RRC relay was Mike Gormely, Deb McLeod, Mike Walsh and Bob Zwaan. The race gives each person or team the opportunity to complete as many 5 mile laps as you can, want, or feel the need to do.
A huge congrats to Bill McGurk for acheiving his goal of 50 miles! His longest distance as of yet! He is feeling healthy and running well.
I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Mike Gormley. My goal for the day was to reach the 100K mark (62 miles). Although the day was going well, I knew it was going to be a stretch as I only did 11 laps the year before. At lap 9 I knew I was cutting it close and feeling tired. The timers had told me I was second female. The first female was 23 minutes ahead of me. I just thought, well good, I am glad she is so far ahead there is no presure to catch her. She can have it; I am very happy with where I am at in second place. My concern was the 62 miles or even 60 miles. Would I have the time to get it in? Do I need help? I did not know where Mike Gormley was in his relay rotation, but if possible, would he pace me the last lap? Without a blink, Mike said he would. Coming up on the final hour Mike was ready to go with me the last lap. In the first half mile, we see the first female up ahead of us. Now how did she get there? Mike asked if I wanted to catch her. No, not really, she looked really strong (and young) last I saw her, I was quite comfy and happy. Mike mentions she is slowing down. I think, yeah right! I look up, she is taking a walk break. In my mind I think, I'll walk too. Mike had other plans. Are we running faster? We were. We were passing her! Mike kept an eye out for her the entire time. I think he may have even fibbed to me saying that she was coming when she wasn't just to keep me moving along. At the end of the lap I finished 60 miles, first female. I was happy and grateful to say the least. But wait, what about my goal of 62 miles? I had 15+ minutes to spare until the 12 hour cut off. Two miles in 15 minutes? I don't think so. Mike asked me if I was sure. I was done. Even on a good day, it would be very hard. It was already a very good day. I ran happy.
I later found out that Mike had given up his postion in the relay to run with me. His selflessness is more of an inspiration than any kind of running I know. To quote another DRRC member: " He is a natural coach." A true friend. His other teammates picked up the extra lap. Their support during that race was constant and amazing. I was not part of their team but part of their family. A family that I am proud to say I am a part of. Thank you. As it turns out the team did very well without Mike. Third overall! Very fast, very good, very consistant runners!! Congrats!

More than Just a Run - Marathon Training and Conditioning - Mon 9/12 - 6:30PM |
From Amy Binder
Just in case you're interested and missed this flyer (we got it in Town Talk), sports doc David Webner will be at the Furness Library in Wallingford on Sept. 12.
I heard him speak at the Jack Daniels running seminar in March, and he's very good.
A common sense guy with a good attitude about keeping runners on the run.
This time, he's talking about training and conditioning for marathons - and how to prevent overtraining.
[I'm sure his advice would apply to shorter distances, too.]

Book Club |
The next book club will be Saturday October 1st at 2pm. Location is the McGurk's home. The book being read is Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S.C Gwynne. 2010. 384 pages (paperback). This book is available and on the shelf at most Delaware County Libraries. Feel free to email the McGurk's if you have any questions. ba1942@yahoo.com
In the tradition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, a stunningly vivid historical account of the forty-year battle between Comanche Indians and white settlers for control of the American West, centering on Quanah, the greatest Comanche chief of them all. So effective were the Comanches that they forced the creation of the Texas Rangers and account for the advent of the new weapon specifically designed to fight them: the six-gun.
S. C. Gwynne's Empire of the Summer Moonspans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.
Although readers may be more familiar with the tribal names Apache and Sioux, it was in fact the legendary fighting ability of the Comanches that determined just how and when the American West opened up. Comanche boys became adept bareback riders by age six; full Comanche braves were considered the best horsemen who ever rode. They were so masterful at war and so skillful with their arrows and lances that they stopped the northern drive of colonial Spain from Mexico and halted the French expansion westward from Louisiana. White settlers arriving in Texas from the eastern United States were surprised to find the frontier being rolled backward by Comanches incensed by the invasion of their tribal lands.
The war with the Comanches lasted four decades, in effect holding up the development of the new American nation. Gwynne's exhilarating account delivers a sweeping narrative that encompasses Spanish colonialism, the Civil War, the destruction of the buffalo herds, and the arrival of the railroads-a historical feast for anyone interested in how the United States came into being.
Against this backdrop Gwynne presents the compelling drama of Cynthia Ann Parker, a lovely nine-year-old girl with cornflower-blue eyes who was kidnapped by Comanches from the far Texas frontier in 1836. She grew to love her captors and became infamous as the "White Squaw" who refused to return until her tragic capture by Texas Rangers in 1860. More famous still was her son Quanah, a warrior who was never defeated and whose guerrilla wars in the Texas Panhandle made him a legend.
S. C. Gwynne's account of these events is meticulously researched, intellectually provocative, and, above all, thrillingly told. Empire of the Summer Moon announces him as a major new writer of American history.
All club members are welcome to attend. |
