"Whenever you have any bump in the road, whether it's two weeks or two years, there are so many naysayers. Let it fuel you. Don't take it personally. Go out and prove them wrong.."

Healthy Kids Running Series

Editor's Note:  This email was received by the Club.  You may not be interested in being a community director but you may be interested in getting your children or know of other children that may be interested in getting involved.

My name is Ryan Long and I am the director of the Healthy Kids Running Series. The Healthy Kids Running Series is a five week running program for kids from Pre-K to 8th grade.  Each Race Series takes place once a week and offers running events such as the 50 yard dash, the 1/4 mile, the 1/2 mile and the one mile run. We are currently in 6 locations in the area (West Chester, PA; Concord Twp, PA; Media, PA; Havertown, PA; Willingboro, NJ; Wilmington, DE) and are looking to expand again!

The reason I am contacting you is to see if you or anyone you know would be interested in being a community director for a new HKRS location? The community director would be responsible for marketing the Series in the community, managing the onsite operations, and securing volunteers/ local sponsors. We would supply all the marketing materials, race day equipment, handle registration, secure a location, etc. This is a paid position and the community director will receive 50% of the net profits from their Series location.

This is a great program that gets kids to enjoy running at an early age and hopefully see them continue later on in their life. We hope to be expanding into your area soon!

If you have any questions about the position you can reach me at 610-518-4932 or send me an email. Either way I look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks,

Ryan Long

Sunday hunting Legislation - take Action Now!

Rep. John Evans (R-Erie), majority chair of the House Game and Fish Committee, just filed the Sunday hunting bill. It will be HB 1760.

Previous efforts were defeated by the 75% who do not hunt. That is as it should be - majority rules. At that time, Representatives listened to their constituents and (for example) Rep. Bruce Smith,an avid hunter, reported that 70% of his constituents did not want Sunday Hunting.

Legislators should take an impartial survey of their constituents: a simple "yes" or "no" response to the question "Do you support Sunday Hunting in Pennsylvania?"

Hikers and other outdoor recreationists must speak out if they do not want to lose Sundays for their recreation.

It's a matter of fairness. While hunters claim an economic boost would result from Sunday hunting, they ignore the loss of the economic impact that would result from the loss of Sundays for the majority - the residents who do not hunt.

See the major campaign going on:
YouTube - Pennsylvania: Urge Your State Representative to Co-sponsor Sunday Hunting or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KouZCIuHkhg

Hunters claim that they need Sunday for hunting because of a "limited amount of time to hunt". Nonsense.  EVERYONE has limited time on weekends and Pennsylvania is already first in the nation in the number of days afield hunting.

Speak out now. Find your representative at
www.legis.state.pa.us and tell him or her to reject Sunday Hunting.

One who speaks out is louder than 10,000 who remain silent.

Good Eats

Skirt Steak with Bloody Mary Tomato Salad

Steak

2 1 1/2 pound skirt steaks

Kosher salt

4 teaspoons (packed) brown sugar, light or dark

2 teaspoons paprika

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Vegetable oil (for brushing)

Salad

1 cup finely chopped red onion

3 tablespoons Sherry vinegar, divided

2 pounds cherry or grape tomatoes, halved (from about 3 pints or 10 ounce containers)

1 cup chopped celery hearts (inner stalks and leaves; from 1 bunch)

1/2 cup chopped brined green olives plus 2 tablespoons olive brine

2 tablespoons prepared horseradish

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce

1/2 teaspoon celery seeds

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Prepare steak: Arrange steaks on large rimmed sheet or cutting board. Mix 1 teaspoon Kosher salt, dark brown sugar, paprika, cayenne and freshly ground black pepper together in a dish. Rub all over steaks and let them marinate in this rub for 1 to 3 hours, covered in the refrigerator. Remove steaks from fridge 1 hour before you're ready to cook them, to bring them to room temperature.

Prepare salad: Pour 1 tablespoon sherry vinegar over onions in the bottom of a large bowl and let them sit for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will temper the onion's bite. Add tomatoes, celery and olives. Whisk remaining 2 tablespoons vinegar, reserved olive brine, horseradish, Worcestershire, pepper sauce and celery seeds in a medium bowl. Slowly drizzle in oil, whisking constantly until combined. Add to tomato salad and toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside until needed, and up to 4 hours in advance, if covered and refrigerated.

Cook steaks: Preheat a charcoal grill to medium-high or a gas grill to the highest heat. Brush grill grates with oil. Grill steaks for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side for medium-rare. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing into 1/4-inch thick slices, against the grain.

Alternately, cook the steaks inside: Heat a large cast-iron skillet on medium-high to high and coat bottom with oil. When oil begins to shimmer, place steak in skillet and do not move it for 5 minutes. Turn it once, and cook for another 3 minutes for medium-rare. Repeat with second steak. If your steaks are too large to cook in one piece, you may halve them to fit. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing into 1/4-inch thick slices, against the grain.
