"Feel the flow of your dance and know you are not running for some future reward-the reward is now!."

Fred Rohe, The Zen of Running

With this quote in mindCome join us at one of our many Fun Runs.  As a runner you already know this.  It might not feel you are being rewarded as you are running but it sure feels that way after you've accomplished the run.
Swarthmore Fun Run - Wednesday

25 runners and walkers were out last night at the Swarthmore Fun Run.  10 people came out to Swarthmore Pizza afterwards for good food and laughs.  Come on out and join in the fun.  All abilities are welcome.

A special thanks to Byron Mundy who provides watermelon to everyone that attends the Swarthmore Fun Run.  The watermelon is there every Wednesday when the temperature is above 80 degrees.  Not a problem this summer.
Hardrock 100 Mile Run - 7/8/11

Rick Hoopes is a former Delco member who many will remember. It may also be of interest to Delco's ultra runners.  Total elevation change is 67,984 feet, 33,992 feet up and 33,992 feet down. The average elevation is 11,186 feet with a low point of 7,680 and a high point of 14,048.

Well, I finished the Hardrock 92-miler last weekend. Unfortunately the finish line was at the 103 mile mark. The course was as tough as advertised, and the bad trail conditions (abundant snow, mud, high water crossings, lightning storms, rain, sleet, etc.) added to the challenge. Old-timers said it was probably the second worst trail conditions in the 18-year history of the run. Fortunately the race kept it's record of having no one die during the run, but it's a mystery to me how they manage to keep that record intact. I think there are about a dozen ways one could die out there, including lightning, hypothermia, drowning in stream crossings, falling off cliffs, sliding off snowfields into rocks, sliding off snowfields into lakes, sliding off snowfields over cliffs, falling though snow bridges into buried streams, mountain lions, pulmonary edema, getting lost and starving to death before being found, and a couple others I have forgotten or blocked from memory.

I ran well and felt reasonably good for the first 70 miles, but then started having a harder time getting enough oxygen on the climbs which caused me to slow my pace significantly. Average elevation on the course is over 11, 000 feet, with about a half-dozen passes or mountain tops at 13,000 to 14,000 feet.  A couple miles before the aid station at about 92 miles, I seemed to start having trouble with regulation of my body temperature and I was getting hot for no apparent reason.  My mastocytosis has caused me to have episodes of anaphylaxis with exercise at high body temperature, so I decided the risk of a bad outcome was getting too high to go on.  My pacer and I walked to the aid station, and I dropped out of the race.  It was a tough decision as I had worked so hard to get that far, and other than the temperature issue, felt like I was strong enough to go on.  Perhaps I could have, but I'd been pushing my body harder and longer (36.5 hours) than I ever had before so it's not certain what would have happened over the next 11 miles.

Thanks to all for your support and wishes for success.  I wish I could have finished, but am satisfied I gave it my best shot and made the right decision in dropping out.  There are lots of pictures of the race with links from the race web site, www.hardrock100.com.

Good Eats

Grilled Zucchini and Grape Tomato Salad

1 large zucchini

Extra virgin olive oil

1 pint grape tomatoes
Handful fresh herbs - chives, sage, basil, summery savory, oregano

1 tablespoon extra virgin finishing-quality olive oil, or more to taste

1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese

Heat the grill to medium hot. Cut the zucchini in half crosswise and then lengthwise so you have four quarters. Brush the cut sides with olive oil. Grill for about 5 minutes total, depending on the thickness of the zucchini. Flip once so that the outside also gets grill marks. You want the zucchini hot through and juicy, but not too soft.

(If you don't have a grill, then broil the zucchini cut side up for a couple minutes or until they begin to brown.)

Cut up the zucchini into bite-sized pieces. Cut the grape tomatoes in half and toss with the zucchini. Mince the herbs finely and toss with the other vegetables. Add the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper, and Parmesan. Taste and adjust as necessary.
