"Running is a thing worth doing not because of the future rewards it bestows, but because of how it feeds our bodies and minds and souls in the present."

With this quote in mindCome join us at one of our many Fun Runs.

See Chicks Run Race

This group has been a recipient of donations from Delco RRC.  If you have the time and the inclination, this looks like a good run.  See Chicks Run benefits Philly Girls in Motion, a volunteer driven organization that encourages and motivates girls and their families to participate in fitness activities and learn about healthy nutrition.  Philly Girls in Motion volunteers work to start running/walking clubs, provide group fitness sessions, and deliver messages about healthy food choices in recreation centers, community centers and schools in and around Philadelphia.

See below for more info.

5K or 10K Run / Walk.  Join us on June 5th at Forbidden Drive in Wissahickon Park for See Chicks Run!, a 5k/10k run just for the girls. You can sign up for either distance...or just decide while you are running how far you want to go.  Because a girl's got a right to change her mind!

Good Eats

Grilled Shrimp Satay with Peaches and Bok Choy

6 tablespoons smooth natural peanut butter, stirred to combine
1/3 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
3 tablespoons seasoned rice vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 to 3 teaspoons hot chili paste (such as sambal oelek)*
9 tablespoons peach nectar, divided
3 peaches or nectarines, each cut into 6 wedges
16 uncooked large shrimp, peeled, deveined
6 heads of baby bok choy, halved lengthwise

Prepare barbecue (medium-high heat). Whisk first 5 ingredients and 5 tablespoons nectar until smooth; season sauce with pepper.

Arrange peaches, shrimp, and bok choy on grill. Brush with 4 tablespoons nectar; brush lightly with 1/4 cup sauce. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill until peaches are slightly charred, shrimp are just opaque in center, and bok choy halves are just tender, about 2 minutes per side for peaches and 3 minutes per side for shrimp and bok choy.

Mound shrimp, bok choy, and peaches on platter. Drizzle with some sauce. Serve with remaining sauce.

Trail Running

Attention Trail Runners!!!

It is time to get back in the trails for Thirsty Thursdays Trail Running. Starting Thursday, June 9th and continuing every Thursday we will meet in the Home Depot parking lot in Broomall at 6:30PM.

We will be running the trails behind O'Hara and Don Guanella.  There are various loops depending upon how long you want to run, 2 miles, 4 miles, 6-7 miles and anything in between. All levels welcome!  I would like to be leaving from the parking lot at 6:30 so get there a little early if you need to prep....  Bring freinds. family or anyone that may be interested in running trails.  Pass it on.
Some may be heading to a local watering hole after the run for a drink.  Come if you like but don't feel pressured if you don't want to or can not go for some other reason (baby sitter, cash flow, etc.....)
If you can't make it to run at 6:30 let me know, there maybe others that would like to go earlier.

Runner's World has a included a supplement on Trail running in the June issue.
Pick up a copy and read all about what you are missing.....

Book Club

The next Book Club meeting will be June 4th, 4pm at Kathy Adamson's home.

The next book is The Art of Racing In the Rain by Garth Stein.

"In Mongolia, when a dog dies, he is buried high in the hills so people cannot walk on his grave. The dog's master whispers into the dog's ear his wishes that the dog will return as a man in his next life. Then his tail is cut off and put beneath his head, and a piece of meat or fat is placed in his mouth to sustain his soul on its journey; before he is reincarnated, the dog's soul is freed to travel the land, to run across the high desert plains for as long as it would like."

I learned that from a program on the National Geographic channel, so I believe it is true. Not all dogs return as men, they say; only those who are ready.

I am ready."

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.

On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life...as only a dog could tell it.
