Hello Delco RRC |
Have something interesting to add to the email? Forward it to me at info@delcorrc.com. Thanks to those that always give me support. "At least 99 percent of running is just showing up, getting out there and putting one foot in front of the other.."
John Hanc, The Essential Runner With this quote in mind: Come join us at one of our many Fun Runs. That's it...one foot. Good. Now the other. See? Very doable. See you soon. |
Swarthmore Fun Run - Wednesday |
36 runners and walkers were out last night at the Swarthmore Fun Run. Several people came out to Swarthmore Pizza afterwards for good food and laughs but most headed over to the Adamson's to watch the Flyer's game and enjoy pizza and salad. Come on out and join in the fun. All abilities are welcome. |
Tyler Volunteers are the Best! |
Dear volunteers: Let me give you a few statistics about this year's race. It was a major success with our biggest signup ever. Although we tried to cap the event at 400 runners, we had to add space for a number of USATF team runners who were late to sign up, and even though we cut off online registration at the 340 mark, we still had a total of 463 paid runners. That's 10% more than last year, and it's an increase of almost 250% over just three or four years ago! Interestingly, we only started 343 runners this year. That huge number of no-shows is a mystery to me. The weather earlier in the week and even the day before was rainy, but as you well know, it was pretty great for racing on that Saturday--so that should not have been a factor. We were very careful to schedule the race so there weren't many competing events. While there were some minor registration issues with our website provider, we fixed all those problems with personal contact and followup service. So, we have no clue!
The feedback following the event has been very, very positive. Nearly everyone complimented the course and the friendly and supportive volunteers. I believe that our expert course marshals and finish line teams help set us apart. And, finally, the food team, led by the unbelievably creative Shirley Weber, put out homemade goodies and found sponsors for candy and snacks that wowed every runner. No one puts out a better spread than this race, and Shirley does it all, for almost no money! Her tiny food budget, our generous sponsors, and our overall very lean management approach keeps this race in the black. In fact, this race generated nearly $1800 for the club's general fund, despite our having held the entry fee to the same $20 that's it's been for years. My wife and I just helped out at a local race, and the race timers had perhaps 10 paid employees working the event. Thanks to you, that sort of overhead, common at other races, is not needed at our race. Our low cost approach also helps attract new runners. And, because people find your smiling faces and supportive voices around every turn, they understand that Delco RRC really does live up to its motto of "Running for Fun and Fitness."
Again, my sincere thanks to you for your service to this race!

On Anniversary, Police to Remind People in Fairmont Park About Rapist Never Caught
April 30, 2011
By Mike Newall, Inquirer Staff Writer
Eight years to the day after the first attack by the Fairmount Park rapist, Philadelphia police will canvass the park Saturday, reminding people about a killer who has never been caught.
"We want folks to remember he could still be out there," said Capt. John Darby, commander of the Special Victims Unit.
DNA evidence linked the rapist to four attacks from 2003 to 2007, including the July 2003 murder of Rebecca Park, 30, a fourth-year medical student raped and strangled near a jogging path by Conshohocken Avenue. The rapist has never been identified.
With the help of police cadets and neighborhood groups, investigators will cover the Kelly and King Drives and Pennypack Park, where the 2007 attack occurred, handing out composite photos of the suspect. He is described as a Hispanic male, about 5-foot-8 with a medium and muscular build, black hair, a thin mustache, and a jawline beard. During two of the assaults, he wore an earring in his left ear. He was twice seen fleeing on a purple 10-speed bike.
Two more recent park attacks have not been tied to the rapist, Darby said.
In August 2009, a 34-year-old woman was raped while preparing for a jog near Forbidden Drive and Bells Mill Road. This month, a 17-year-old was assaulted while jogging on Valley Green Road near Devil's Pool. An unknown male hit her in the head and tried to remove her clothing, but she was able to run away, police said.
"There is no definitive link between those cases to each other or to the rapist," Darby said.
Saturday's efforts are to remind park-goers about general safety awareness, Darby said. He added that he hoped they could develop new tips.
The hunt for the Fairmount Park rapist remains active, Darby said, with investigators combing national DNA bases and working with FBI profilers.
"This is something that is on our radar every day," Darby said. "We don't forget."

Man Runs 99 Miles Home After London Marathon |
Sam Robson did what most people do after completing a marathon: He went home and fell asleep. Except rather than drive to his house, 99 miles away from the finish line of the London Marathon, Robson ran back. All the way.
The 28-year-old from Central England finished Sunday's official race in 3 hours and 45 minutes before starting on the 99-mile second leg. He arrived to his home in St. Ives Cambs about 25 hours later, greeted by a cheering crowd. In total, he ran 125 miles in 29 hours, a pace of around 13 minutes per mile.
That number sounds insane, but it's even more mind-boggling if you really think about it. Think back to what you were doing five hours ago yesterday. Now imagine you've been running since then. I don't know if most people could stay awake that long, let alone do anything remotely physical.
Robson, a medical researcher, completed the super-marathon to raise money for the UK Epilepsy Society. In all, he raised a little more than $5,000 for the charity. Robson has suffered from the condition since he was a teenager.
He told reporters that the running itself was easy, but staying up, keeping hydrated and ingesting calories (to make up for the 15,000 he burned) was the hard part.
"I had to have regular breaks to refill my water and whenever I stopped my legs seized up so I couldn't rest for long. In terms of tiredness, my legs felt pretty good and the worst bit was I had to keep eating to replace all the calories I was burning.
One day after his mega-run, Robson said he was doing fine except for some soreness. That's to be expected. It wasn't just his first 99-mile run, it was his first marathon too.

Book Club |
The next Book Club meeting will be June 4th. Location and time still to be determined.
The next book is The Art of Racing In the Rain by Garth Stein.
"In Mongolia, when a dog dies, he is buried high in the hills so people cannot walk on his grave. The dog's master whispers into the dog's ear his wishes that the dog will return as a man in his next life. Then his tail is cut off and put beneath his head, and a piece of meat or fat is placed in his mouth to sustain his soul on its journey; before he is reincarnated, the dog's soul is freed to travel the land, to run across the high desert plains for as long as it would like."
I learned that from a program on the National Geographic channel, so I believe it is true. Not all dogs return as men, they say; only those who are ready.
I am ready."
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.
On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side.
A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life...as only a dog could tell it.
All Club members are welcome to take part. Email me at info@delcorrc.com if you have any questions.
