Hello Delco RRC |
Have something interesting to add to the email? Forward it to me at info@delcorrc.com. Thanks to those that always give me support. "I spent my first 25 years trying to avoid running at all costs. In middle school, I would schedule orthodontist appointments during gym class. In high school, I played goalie in field hockey because goalies didn't have to run as much. In college, I mostly just sat around. In fact, I never intended to run. I started walking for fitness and just got bored and wanted it to be over sooner. As much as I avoided running, it still managed to find me. I think there's a life lesson in there, I'm just trying to avoid finding it." Diane Rowe - Delco RRC Member With this quote in mind: Come join us at one of our many Fun Runs and see if you can avoid running as well as Diane has. |
Swarthmore Fun Run - Wednesday |
20 runners and walkers were out last night at the Swarthmore Fun Run. 9 people came out to Swarthmore Pizza afterwards for good food and laughs. Come on out and join in the fun. All abilities are welcome.
Last Wednesday we celebrated Dot's birthday. Her response:
To all the Delco runners and walkers who attended my birthday celebration at Swarthmore Pizza last Wed. I want to say thank you. If I had few words to say it was due to the surprise. I have been a member of DELCO RRC for 38 years and you truly are a wonderful group. Again a big thanks to all of you.

Olympic Marathon Champ Sammy Wanjiru Dies |
NAIROBI, Kenya -- Kenyan Olympic marathon champion Sammy Wanjiru died in a fall from a balcony after a domestic dispute involving his wife and another woman, police said Monday.
One police official said Wanjiru committed suicide, while another said he jumped to stop his wife from leaving the house after she discovered him with another woman.
The 24-year-old runner died late Sunday after jumping from a balcony at his home in the town of Nyahururu, in the Rift Valley, said John Mbijiwe, the police chief in Kenya's Central Province.
"The fact of the matter is that Wanjiru committed suicide," said national police spokesman Eric Kiraithe.
Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere also said initial reports indicated Wanjiru killed himself, though a local official offered a different account.
"Wanjiru came home with another woman friend at around 11:30 p.m. and then when his wife came home and found them she inquired who the lady was," area police chief Jasper Ombati said. "They got into an argument. His wife locked them in the bedroom and ran off.
"He then jumped from the bedroom balcony. He is not here to tell us what he thinking when he jumped. We do not suspect foul play. In our estimation we think he wanted to stop his wife from leaving the compound."
Ethiopian distance running great Haile Gebrselassie, a two-time Olympic 10,000-meter champion and world record-holder in the marathon, said on his Twitter feed that he was "totally shocked" by the news.
"My thoughts are with his family and all his friends and colleagues," Gebrselassie said.
"Of course one wonders if we as an athletics family could have avoided this tragedy," he said.
American marathon runner Ryan Hall posted on Twitter: "Incredibly sad news about Sammy. I am shocked and saddened."
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Wanjiru became the first Kenyan to win a gold medal in the marathon, finishing in an Olympic-record 2 hours, 6 minutes, 32 seconds.
"Sammy Wanjiru was an accomplished runner who will be remembered for winning the first Olympic gold medal for Kenya in marathon and setting a new Olympic record in the process," the International Olympic Committee said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
Wanjiru had a history of domestic problems. Last December, he was charged with wounding his security guard with a rifle and threatening to kill his wife and maid. The runner denied all charges and was released on bail.
Wanjiru made an early start to his career, moving at age 15 to Japan, where he attended school in Sendai -- a city hard hit by this year's tsunami -- and won several major cross-country events while also competing in track competitions.
Moving to Europe to advance his promising career, Wanjiru won the Rotterdam Half Marathon in 2005 in a world-record time. He twice improved on that record before stepping up to the full marathon in 2007, winning the Fukuoka Marathon in Japan.
The following year he finished second in the prestigious London marathon, and then claimed the biggest prize of his career by taking Olympic gold in Beijing.
Wanjiru became the youngest runner to win four major marathons. Along with the Olympics, he won in London in 2009 and in Chicago in 2009 and 2010, running the fastest ever time recorded in a marathon in the United States.
(Editor's Note: Over the past several weeks I have posted obits of marathoners dying. I have come to the conclusion that running marathons is dangerous for you. That and sudden stops.) |

Book Signing at The Running Place |
The Running Place is hosting a book author next week and I thought many of the club members may have interest in coming out to it.
The Running Place is hosting writer Charlie Butler, Runner's World Magazine Executive Editor and author of The Long Run for a book signing on Thursday, May 26th from 6 to 7 PM. This book is an inspirational memoir about firefighter Matt Long's near brush with death and his journey to overcome severe injuries and run the 2008 New York City Marathon. "Running saved my life," Matt says, and his embrace of the running community and insistence on competing in the marathon has inspired many, turning him into a symbol of hope and recovery. Books will be available for purchase (and signing). No need to RSVP.

Book Club |
The next Book Club meeting will be June 4th, 4pm at Kathy Adamson's home.
The next book is The Art of Racing In the Rain by Garth Stein.
"In Mongolia, when a dog dies, he is buried high in the hills so people cannot walk on his grave. The dog's master whispers into the dog's ear his wishes that the dog will return as a man in his next life. Then his tail is cut off and put beneath his head, and a piece of meat or fat is placed in his mouth to sustain his soul on its journey; before he is reincarnated, the dog's soul is freed to travel the land, to run across the high desert plains for as long as it would like."
I learned that from a program on the National Geographic channel, so I believe it is true. Not all dogs return as men, they say; only those who are ready. I am ready."
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.
On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side.
A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life...as only a dog could tell it.
