Hello Delco RRC |
Have something interesting to add to the email? Forward it to me at info@delcorrc.com. Thanks to those that always give me support. "The challenge in running is not to aim at doing the things no one else has done, but to keep doing things anyone could do-but most never will."
Joe Henderson in The Complete Book of Running With this quote in mind: Come join us at one of our many Fun Runs...keep doing what many won't. |
Tyler Trail Race - Thanks |
I'm sure John will write something up for the newsletter but I just wanted to say thank you to him and Amy for all of the work that they put in to make this the most successful race Delco RRC puts on. Yes he has co-directors and volunteers who help out on race day, but John and Amy are the driving force behind this event. Speaking for myself, a co-director, I did almost nothing to help John put on this race. From his decision and design of the arm-warmers (a wonderful and different idea), to marking the course, to managing all registration responsibilities, and actually, doing just about everything to make sure that the race was the success it has become. John and Amy, I can not thank you enough for all of your hard work. I hope you will continue to do this as your expertise and dedication are unmatched and whole-heartedly appreciated.

***Bill Steele, the 2nd place finisher at Tyler, is missing a grey sweatshirt that says something like Maryland vs. Virginia. He'd very much like to get it back, if anyone picked it up. You can contact Bill at steelerunner@yahoo.com. |

Spring Fling - Save the Date - April 9th |
It's time to kick off your running shoes and put on your dancing shoes for an evening of dancing, dinner, and laughs as we get together for our annual Spring Fling. Join in the dancing as our instructor/ DJ teaches us simple and fun dances in between letting us loose to dance our own way to favorite songs. If you need a bit of fresh air, a deck overlooking the river is just outside.

There will be a cash bar. Cash or checks (made payable to Delco RRC) may be mailed to Mary Beth Mundy at 214 Blunston Ave./ Collingdale PA 19023. Please RSVP by April 1, 2011. NPT Race for Our First Responders |
The Nether Providence Township Race For Our First Responders will be back for its sixth year and we hope to once again attract a lot of Delco RRC members (without competition from a club event if we're lucky). But this year, the race will have a few twists.
First, we are moving the race from the third Saturday in October to the fourth Saturday, which will be October, 22nd.
Second, our race has been invited to partner with Wilson Oil to raise the profile of the event and to split the proceeds with the Susan G. Kommen Foundation. Wilson Oil is celebrating its 85th anniversary in Wallingford and will be the lead sponsor. They are hoping we can start it and end it at their site in honor of their celebration. I have a possible course, which radically changes the character of the race from a very easy one, in the southern part of Nether Providence near the fire house, to a much more challenging, if also more naturally attractive course. But it has--in a word--hills. I have attached a link to the route and am wondering if people can run it, preferably on a Saturday morning around 10 a.m. and give me their feedback. Earlier is ok, but I am interested in traffic patterns. We know the train schedule and on Saturdays we have a long window from quarter after the hour till about 20 minutes of the next hour to get people across the railroad track. Any comments (provided they minimize the use of four letter words directed to me as a person) would be appreciated. I plan to talk to the NPT parks and recreation committee about doing a "fun run" (low fee, possibly a T shirt) on the traditional course at another time this year so people can see if they are running faster. I is possible we will move back to old course after this year or start another event that uses the old course. In the mean time, thoughts about this route would be great! Especially comments on safety.

Good Eats |
Espresso Banana Muffins
2 cups white whole-wheat flour
2 teaspoons aluminum-free baking powder
1/2 teaspoon fine-grain sea salt
1 1/4 cups chopped toasted walnuts
1 tablespoon fine espresso powder
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup plain yogurt
1 1/2 cups mashed overripe bananas (about 3 large bananas) Heat the oven to 375°F, position the racks low in the oven, and line 12 muffin cups with paper liners. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, 3/4 cup of the walnuts, and the espresso powder in a bowl and whisk to combine. In a separate large bowl or a stand mixer, cream the butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the sugar andthen the eggs, one at a time. Stir in the vanilla, yogurt, and mashed bananas, then briefly and gently mix in the dry ingredients; overmixing will result in tough muffins. Spoon into the prepared muffin tin (an ice-cream scoop works well), top with the remaining 1/2 cup walnuts, and bake until golden, about 25 mintues. Fill the cups two-thirds full for regular muffins or to the brim for a big-topped version. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. |

Book Club |
The next Book Club meeting will be at 1:30 on April 10th at Shirley's home. Contact Shirley at weber720@comcast.net
The next book is Tinkers by Paul Harding. 2009. 192 pages. Winner of 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
An astonishing first novel of memory, consciousness, and man's place in the natural world.
An old man lies dying. Confined to bed in his living room, he sees the walls around him begin to collapse, the windows come loose from their sashes, and the ceiling plaster fall off in great chunks, showering him with a lifetime of debris: newspaper clippings, old photographs, wool jackets, rusty tools, and the mangled brass works of antique clocks. Soon, the clouds from the sky above plummet down on top of him, followed by the stars, till the black night covers him like a shroud. He is hallucinating, in death throes from cancer and kidney failure.
A methodical repairer of clocks, he is now finally released from the usual constraints of time and memory to rejoin his father, an epileptic, itinerant peddler, whom he had lost seven decades before. In his return to the wonder and pain of his impoverished childhood in the backwoods of Maine, he recovers a natural world that is at once indifferent to man and inseparable from him, menacing and awe inspiring.
Tinkers is about the legacy of consciousness and the porousness of identity from one generation to the next. At once heartbreaking and life affirming, it is an elegiac meditation on love, loss, and the fierce beauty of nature.
All Club members are welcome to take part. Email me at info@delcorrc.com if you have any questions. |
