Hello Delco RRC

Have something interesting to add to the email?  Forward it to me at info@delcorrc.com.  Thanks to those that always give me support.

"When people ask me why I run, I tell them, there's not really a reason, it's just the adrenalin when you start, and the feeling when you cross that finish line, and know that you are a winner no matter what place you got.

Courtney Parson - Athlete (like us)

With this quote in mind: I find that this not only goes for races but for every run that I do.  Sure, the adrenalin spikes when it comes time for races but getting a good feeling every time I complete a run is what keeps me coming out.  Well, that and the good friends I have made through the years.  Come join us at one of our many Fun Runs and get the same feeling.

A Water Stop Thank You

THANK YOU, THANK YOU AND THANK YOU

I just want to take a minute to thank the club for a great marathon experience. I must admit I just popped back in over the last few months to get ready for the marathon. When I've trained with Steve Whitmore in the past, I have exceeded my expectations this time  was no exception. Something about chasing Steve around the hills of Springfield and Media is great training for me, how pathetic. Steve and I ran the race at the same pace and on several occasions he settled me down when I thought I could go faster than I should. Our water stop is amazing and at just the right points in the race. On the way out everyone gets you fired up. Its like a slingshot to the turn around in Manyunk. I was able to safely give my Delco RRC gloves to Shirley Weber and even told her to give them to Bill McGurk so when I asked him for another pair of gloves, he could just hand them to me out of his magical trunk. Okay, so I got to the turn around  and we're heading out of Manyunk at about mile 21, I hear Steve say YOH you just about knocked me over. These two guys (obnoxious, I heard one of them say, It is a race isn't it?)  pass me and I said what's wrong with you two and ran up between them. Of course, the 6'4" 200+ pound guy said, I'm in no mood for this, stop it before I deck you. As I dropped back I yelled something choice at the guy. Well, the adreneline rush was incredible and for the next two miles keeping those guys in sight kept me moving faster than I should have been. As we settled down to a reasonable pace, I could look forward to one more time through our water stop and it came up much faster than I thought. All I remember was seeing Byron and Chris Mc Goldrick screaming at the top of their lungs with encouragement and there were many other faces doing the same. It was a rush and there was Dawn at the end of the stop, no hug this time. Needless to say that got me to somewhere near the end of the race. I was impressed and  very thankful that I run with you folks.

Have a Great Thanksgiving!

Nick Sacchetti

Book Recommendations

There are two books that I would recommend for those interested in running.  They are the "Perfect Mile" and "Unbroken".  These books are about Wes Santee and Louis Zamperini respectively.   Wes Santee was America's best miler in the early 50's and might well have run the first 4 minute mile had it not been for the abuse he took from the AAU and others during his prime.  He passed away on November 14 from cancer at age 78.  He ran 4 times under 4;01 but never under 4, and was banned by the AAU in 1956 at age 24 for accepting "excess" expense money.  "The Perfect Mile" tells the story of Bannister, Landy, and Santee; the three men trying to be the first under 4 minutes.

"Unbroken" is brand new and is by the woman who wrote "Seabiscuit".  Zamperini held the national high school record for almost 20 years at 4:21,  He served in WWII and was in a Japanese prison camp.  He is 93 and is still active doing speaking engagements.

These books may be familiar to a lot of our members, but I'll mention them anyway as they relate very well to track and field as well as to history.

Mushroom Casserole Recipe

This is a great dish to bring to a holiday dinner.  Use any cooked grain you like. Feel free to use low-fat cottage cheese or sour cream if you prefer.

1/2 pound (8 ounces) brown mushrooms, cleaned and chopped
1 large onion, well chopped
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
3 cups cooked brown rice, room temperature
2 large eggs
1 cup cottage cheese
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
a bit of fresh tarragon, chopped

Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Rub a medium-large baking dish with a bit of olive oil or butter and set aside. The pan I use is slightly smaller than a classic 9x13 baking dish - just grab for something in this ballpark.

In a large skillet over medium-high heat saute the mushrooms in a glug of olive oil sprinkled with a couple pinches of salt. Stir every minute or so until the mushrooms have released their liquid and have browned a bit. Add the onions and cook for another 4 or 5 minutes or until they are translucent. Stir in the garlic, cook for another minute and remove from heat. Add the rice to the skillet and stir until combined.

In a medium bowl whisk together the eggs, cottage cheese, sour cream, and salt.

Combine the rice mixture and cottage cheese mixture in a large bowl, stir until well combined and then turn out into your prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with 2/3 of the Parmesan cheese, cover with foil and place in oven for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 20 or 30 minutes more or hot throughout and golden along the edges. Sprinkle with the chopped tarragon, and the remaining Parmesan and enjoy.
