Aussie marathon man to run from North to South poles - To begin March 2011

SYDNEY (AFP) - An Australian ultra-marathon athlete who holds records for the fastest run around his own country and across its vast desert centre Tuesday launched a bid to run from the North to South poles.  Pat Farmer, once dubbed Australia's "Forrest Gump", aims to raise 100 million US dollars for Red Cross water and sanitation programmes during his 21,000-kilometre (13,000-mile) journey through 14 countries in the Americas.

"I believe I'm born with a gift," Farmer, 48, told AFP.  "My gift is to be able to run long distances faster and perhaps further than any other person on Earth, so I figure I'd be a fool if I had this gift and didn't use it."

Though the trip has been some 10 years in the making, Farmer said it was a recent trip to southeast Asia that inspired him to dedicate it to the Red Cross.  "I saw children covered with needlestick injuries in a dump trying to break syringes down to sell the metal inside for bottles of water," he said.  "It was a heartbreaking turning point for me.  "By creating clean supplies of water and installing proper sanitation facilities -- things we all take for granted in Australia -- we can change people's lives forever."

His 11-month voyage will take him from freezing tundra through the tropics, and Farmer expects to go through more than 40 pairs of shoes and 300 pairs of socks.

"This is by far the greatest challenge of my life," he said, adding that he had been training "like a man possessed".
"To be quite honest with you I don't know if I can run from the North pole to the South pole," said Farmer, who also served for a decade as an Australian government MP.  "But I do know that I can run for 80 kilometres, or 85 kilometres or 90 or 100k's a day and I do know that I can get up the next morning and do the same thing the next day.  "I will take it one day at a time and I will achieve this enormous goal."
Farmer's run starts at the North pole in March and will continue through Canada, the United States, Mexico and 10 South American countries before he arrives in Argentina to be airlifted to the final South Pole leg.  Once he is done he will return to the United States to address the United Nations about his journey and the plight that inspired him.

Former opposition Labor leader Mark Latham dubbed then federal politician Farmer, from the rival Liberal Party, "Forrest Gump" after the Hollywood movie in which the lead character runs across America.
Good Eats

Mexican Lasagna

1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips
1 large onion, halved and cut into thin wedges
1 large clove garlic, minced
2 cups (16 ounces) fat-free ricotta cheese
1 cup (8 ounces) reducedfat sour cream
1 jar (4 ounces) chopped green chile peppers
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 cups salsa
8 corn tortillas (6" diameter), cut in half
1 1/4 cups (5 ounces) shredded low-fat Monterey Jack cheese

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a 13" x 9" baking dish with cooking spray.

Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and place over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook, turning several times, for 5 minutes, or until no longer pink. Remove to a medium bowl. Wipe the skillet with a paper towel. Coat with cooking spray. Place over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, for 7 to 8 minutes, or until lightly browned. Add to the chicken in the bowl.

In another medium bowl, combine the ricotta, sour cream, chile peppers, cilantro (if using), cumin, and salt.

Spread 1 cup of the salsa across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Arrange half of the tortillas evenly over the salsa. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the tortillas. Top with half of the chicken mixture. Top with 1 cup of the remaining salsa and 1/2 cup of the Monterey Jack. Repeat the layering sequence with the remaining tortillas, ricotta mixture, and chicken mixture. Sprinkle with the remaining 1 cup of the salsa and 3/4 cup cheese.

Bake for 30 minutes, or until heated through. Loosely cover with foil if the cheese browns too quickly.

Women's Distance Festival - The year sure does race by!!!

To all Delco RRC runners - please come out to support the Rose Tree training runs in September. We need help in welcoming new runners and making sure they don't get lost.
WDF

Runners "buddy up" to learn the cross country course, prepare for race.

For the fourth year in a row, the Delco Road Runners Club will be meeting at Rose Tree Park every Thursday night in September to run one of the best cross country courses in Delaware County.

The ultimate goal is to prepare runners to compete in the 31st Annual Women's Distance Festival 5K Run/Walk (3.1 miles) to be held at the park on Oct. 16th. Even for those who don't enter the race, the free training runs are a great opportunity to learn the cross country course at any pace - walking, jogging or racing.

The "buddy up" component to encourage participation among newer runners will be used again this year. Seasoned runners will pair up with newbies, and people who run a similar pace will find new running buddies. For the race on Oct. 16th, there is also a reduced "buddy up" entry fee for runners who register together by mail.

The training runs are open to women and men (and girls and boys) though the race is open to women only. (The club may allow men to run, but really, its the WDF.  Take a break.)  The training runs are free and no registration is required. Anyone who is interested should meet at Rose Tree Park 's first parking lot, alongside Route 252, about 15 minutes before the run starts at 6:30 p.m. The dates are September 9, 16, 23 and 30.

The Women's Distance Festival 5K will be held Saturday, Oct. 16 at 10:00 a.m. Race proceeds will help support (Still to be determined). Additionally, proceeds will help Delco RRC in its mission to promote running as a lifelong activity that can enhance the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of people of all ages.

For more information about the training runs or the race visit www.WomensDistanceFestival.com or contact Dawn Patterson at sunsetmk@aol.com.

About the WDF
The Women's Distance Festival was created by the Road Runners Club of America to support the inclusion of women's distance events in the Olympic Games. The race at Rose Tree is presented by the Delco Road Runners Club, and is part of the Delco RRC doubleheader, "A Day of Champions." In the afternoon, high-school athletes will compete on the same 5K course in the 47th Annual Delaware County Cross Country Championships.
