Lack of Vitamin D Weakens and Injures Muscles

Because of injuries in the springtime, I missed six Boston Marathons back in the 1960s. It wasn't until 40 years later that I found the cause: my vitamin D3 blood level was 20 nmol/l (normal is greater than 75 nmol/L, equal to 30 ng/ml). Recently I moved to Florida and have been relatively injury free for the first time in my life. I now know that people genetically susceptible to vitamin D deficiency are the ones most likely to suffer muscle weakness, injuries and poor athletic performance. Many exercisers and even competitive athletes are vitamin D deficient even if they live in the sunbelt. I believe that sunlight offers benefits that cannot be obtained just by taking vitamin D pills.

Vitamin D acts directly on specific receptors in muscles to make them stronger and prevent injury (Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, April 2010). As people age, they become increasingly susceptible to muscle weakness and falls caused by lack of vitamin D. Muscles are made of thousands of individual fibers that are classified into two types: slow twitch fibers that govern endurance, and fast twitch fibers that govern primarily strength and speed. Vitamin D specifically maintains the function of the fast twitch strength fibers. A review of the world's literature showed that lack of vitamin D is associated with muscle weakness in older people (Molecular Aspects of Medicine, June 2005). With aging, you lose muscle fibers. For example, the vastus medialis muscle in the front of the upper leg has 800,000 fibers in a 20 year old, but only 250,000 in a 60 year old. Vitamin D slows this loss of muscle fibers, preserves muscle strength and helps to prevent falls, while lack of vitamin D increases loss of fibers, muscle weakness and falls (Pediatric Clinics of North America, June 2010).

If you suffer muscle weakness, pain or injuries:
ˇ Check your vitamin D3 level. That is the only available dependable test. If it is below 75 nmol/L (30 ng/ml), you are deficient.
ˇ You can try taking vitamin D3 at a dose of at least 2000 IU/day for a month.
ˇ If that does not bring your D3 level to normal, you can check with your doctor about taking higher doses.
ˇ A certain percentage of people will have their vitamin D3 levels go above a normal 75 nmol/L and still suffer from muscle weakness, fatigue, pain and injuries.
ˇ These people may benefit from exposure to sunlight.
ˇ Since skin cancer is caused by cumulative exposure to sunlight over a lifetime, you should restrict exposure to sunlight on your head, face, top of ears, arms and hands.
ˇ Try exposing your legs and bathing trunk areas. Be careful to avoid sunburn.
ˇ Start at low exposures of less than a couple of minutes and work up gradually. You cannot tell that you have suffered a sunburn until the next day when your skin will burn, itch and perhaps blister.
Virgil Whitset

Virgil Whitset, My alumni brother and fellow Delco Road Runner is being inducted to our high school hall of fame. He was quite a hurdler in 1981. See below:
"Spartan Hall of Fame Induction Sept. 24 -- Nine individuals and one performing group will be inducted into the Spartan Hall of Fame, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Founders Hall Auditorium. A reception will follow at the Clyde Stacks Gallery.
Athletic inductees: Glenn Alexander '67, Andrew Allessie, coach; the late John "Mac" McMillen '66, Ralph Tomassi '73, and Virgil Whitsett '81"
We had fun in those days at the practices and the meets because we had good people to run with. As members of DCRRs we are still having fun and running with good people. Congratulate Virgil when you see him out there!

Good Eats

Bill's Protein Shake

6 oz. fat free greek yogurt
4 oz. vanilla soy milk
1/2 cup blueberries
1/2 of a banana
2 scoops whey protein powder
2 tbsp. wheat germ
1 tbsp. flax seed
1 tbps. honey
1 tsp fish oil

Put all ingredients in a blender.  Blend until smooth.

Soy Protein: Soy protein reduces total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) and triglycerides.
Greek yogurt compared to regular: It's lower in carbohydrates, higher in protein (2x the amount of regular), lower in sodium.
Blueberries: The highest antioxidant capacity of all fresh fruit.

Honey: Honey offers incredible antiseptic, antioxidant and cleansing properties for our body and health,  and amazing healing properties as a head-to-toe remedy, from eye conjunctivitis to athlete foot.
Fish oil: Decreases pain and inflammation, slows down the progression of cancer, improves cardiovascular health, improves vision and help avoid age related macular degeneration and if that is not enough - it is a mood stabalizer.

Women's Distance Festival - The year sure does race by!!!

To all Delco RRC runners - please come out to support the Rose Tree training runs in September. We need help in welcoming new runners and making sure they don't get lost.
WDF

Runners "buddy up" to learn the cross country course, prepare for race.

For the fourth year in a row, the Delco Road Runners Club will be meeting at Rose Tree Park every Thursday night in September to run one of the best cross country courses in Delaware County.

The ultimate goal is to prepare runners to compete in the 31st Annual Women's Distance Festival 5K Run/Walk (3.1 miles) to be held at the park on Oct. 16th. Even for those who don't enter the race, the free training runs are a great opportunity to learn the cross country course at any pace - walking, jogging or racing.

The "buddy up" component to encourage participation among newer runners will be used again this year. Seasoned runners will pair up with newbies, and people who run a similar pace will find new running buddies. For the race on Oct. 16th, there is also a reduced "buddy up" entry fee for runners who register together by mail.

The training runs are open to women and men (and girls and boys) though the race is open to women only. (The club may allow men to run, but really, its the WDF.  Take a break.)  The training runs are free and no registration is required. Anyone who is interested should meet at Rose Tree Park 's first parking lot, alongside Route 252, about 15 minutes before the run starts at 6:30 p.m. The dates are September 9, 16, 23 and 30.

The Women's Distance Festival 5K will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, at 10:00 a.m. Race proceeds will help support (Still to be determined). Additionally, proceeds will help Delco RRC in its mission to promote running as a lifelong activity that can enhance the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of people of all ages.

For more information about the training runs or the race visit www.WomensDistanceFestival.com or contact Dawn Patterson at sunsetmk@aol.com.

About the WDF
The Women's Distance Festival was created by the Road Runners Club of America to support the inclusion of women's distance events in the Olympic Games. The race at Rose Tree is presented by the Delco Road Runners Club, and is part of the Delco RRC doubleheader, "A Day of Champions." In the afternoon, high-school athletes will compete on the same 5K course in the 47th Annual Delaware County Cross Country Championships.
