Hello Delco RRC

"Don't let what you can't do interfere with what you can do." - Anonymous

With this quote in mind - Hurt?  Ride your bike.  Can't run fast or far?  Niether can many of us that still come out weekly.  Come on out.  Plenty of Fun Runs and races posted on our web site.
We LOVE running in the park

37 people joined us for the third training run in Rose Tree Park on Sept. 17 in preparation for the Women's Distance Festival 5K on Oct. 10. Once again, Bob Zwaan brought soft pretzels and The Running Place provided more Brooks "Run Happy" hats. While we can't guarantee the same amenities for the fourth and final training run TONIGHT, you can never predict what will happen. BTW: We're starting at 6:15 p.m. because daylight is fading fast. (Although if you can't get there until 6:30, I'll wait for you.)

Registration for the race topped 120 earlier this week-a WDF record.  As for race day on Saturday, Oct. 10:
The race starts at 10:00, with race-number pickup starting at 9:00 at the gazebo.
Cecily Tynan ran either the same or similar course for the 9/11 Heroes Run and "loved it!" She was the second woman @ 20:33; at 40 years old, she was beaten only by 24-year-old Katie O'Reagan, at 20:08. The overall winner was Cecily's husband, Greg Watson, 43, at 17:46. Can't wait to see what Cecily does at the WDF!
There will be a half-dozen runners from Students Run Philly Style, coming from Girls High in Philadelphia .
One of the race beneficiaries, Divine Providence Village, will have about 20 of their residents out to walk the first part of the course (to the horseshoe and back).
We've now surpassed all previous records for pre-registration, topping 120 signing up so far (and I'm upping the T-shirt order to reflect the latest numbers). This level of interest is HUGE for a women's race.
There's still time to volunteer. If you want to bake cookies or other tasty snacks, contact Shirley Weber. If you want to be a course marshal, contact Kristen Dwinnells. And, PLEASE, if you can stay and be a course marshal for the Delco Cross Country Championships in the afternoon (we'll provide lunch while you're waiting), contact Byron Mundy.

Mouse Trap

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall
to see the farmer and his wife open a package.
"What food might this contain?"  The mouse wondered.
He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.
Joke mouse worried

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed this warning :  "There is a mousetrap in the house!   There is a mousetrap in the house!"
Joke Chicken

The chicken clucked and scratched,   raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me.   I cannot be bothered by it."   The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the house!   There is a mousetrap in the house!"
Joke pig

The pig sympathized, but said, "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray..   Be assured you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow and said, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"
Joke cow

The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose."

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap . . . Alone.. . .

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house  -- the sound Of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught.   In the darkness, she did not see it.   It was a venomous snake whose tail was caught in the trap.

The snake bit the farmer's wife.
Joke ambulance

The farmer rushed her to the hospital.
Joke wife sick

When she returned home she still had a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup. So the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient:
Joke chicken cooked

But his wife's sickness continued.   Friends and neighbors came to sit  with her around the clock.    To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.
Joke serving tray

But, alas, the farmer's wife did not get well...   She died.
Joke coffin

So many people came for her funeral that the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them for the funeral luncheon.

And the mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and you think it doesn't concern you, remember ---
Joke earth 1

When one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.
Joke earth walking

YOU MAY WANT TO SEND THIS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS EVER HELPED YOU OUT...
 Joke friends hugging

AND LET THEM KNOW HOW  IMPORTANT THEY ARE.

- REMEMBER -

EACH OF US IS A VITAL THREAD IN ANOTHER PERSON'S TAPESTRY.

OUR LIVES ARE WOVEN TOGETHER FOR A REASON.

34th Annual Johnstown PA Marathon Back On - Support The Event
Wouldn't it be a shame if a 34 year old marathon stopped running? We thought so... So when we read that the Johnstown Marathon had been canceled and that a local businessman had raised much of the $12,000 to keep the race afloat but was still short $4,500, what did we do (you can guess and be right...). Anyway, with only 5 weeks to go to race day, the marathon is gearing up, but that isn't much time to recruit runners... To support the continuation of a tradition - we'll ask here that if you're thinking of a marathon, half marathon, 10K or 5K in Central/Western Pennsylvania, signup for the Johnstown PA YMCA Marathon today - your support will make a difference and it's a quality small-town event (and fast, too!).

*This event has added a half marathon and marathon relay this year, and is run in early October each year.

Cancellation Notice: USA Masters 5 km Cross Country Championships

Due to unforeseen economic issues affecting the Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 USA Masters 5 km Cross Country Championships, USA Track & Field and the organizers have come to the difficult decision to cancel the 2009 event in St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida. Over the last several weeks, escalating event related costs have combined with sponsorship cuts, creating issues that will not allow the organizing committee to produce an event of national championship caliber.
Club Member Sets Record - David Klein

Congratulations to David Klein!

With the times that were being posted at a Central League cross country quad meet Wednesday, one would think the runners were wearing those polyurethane swim suits that caused such a stir earlier this summer.

How else to explain the course records that not only fell, but were shattered at Mill Road Park?

On the boys side, Strath Haven's David Klein and Richard Scott finished first and second, respectively, and both bettered the best time set at that course with seconds to spare.

Klein ran the 3.1-mile course in 17:16, eight seconds better than the record set by Penncrest's Nick Bonaventure last Fall. Scott finished in 17:24, beating the time by four seconds.

Strath Haven defeated each of the teams it competed against with Conestoga coming second, Upper Darby third and Garnet Valley fourth.

"I decided to take it out slowly and let the leaders do the work. I stayed back until the hill at two miles, then by the top of the hill I wanted to be near the lead." - David Klein

Editor's note:  David's father informs me that David learned this technique when he used to run alongside Terry Adamson in the Swarthmore Fun Runs when he was about 9, David would change his running pace until Terry started cramping than pass him.  Good job Terry!

Staying Away from Carbs??

Posted by Nancy Clark RD CSSD Jul 15, 2009

Just about every day, I counsel a client who is trying to stay away from carbs. That is, they try not to eat bagels, sandwiches or a starch with dinner (pasta, rice, potato). When I ask why, they report carbs are "fattening" or a "waste of calories". False.

Carbs are not fattening; excess calories are fattening. In fact, the conversion of carbs into body fat is a tough conversion; your body preferentially burns carbs for fuel. (Fatty foods, in comparison, easily convert into body fat.) Carbs offer the fuel you need to enjoy exercise. Active people who fail to eat carbs as the foundation of each meal end up fatigued and failing to enjoy their exercise program.

Wholesome carbs like oatmeal, whole what bread, and brown rice offer important nutrients, but so do refined carbs like white bagels and pasta that are enriched with b-vitamins and iron. The government guidelines suggest half your daily grains be whole grains, but half can be refined, if desired. That is, if you have white bread for lunch, you can balance it with brown rice for dinner.

Enjoy your sandwich!

Nancy

Editor's Note:  WHAT THE &%*&()*!!!  Eat this..don't eat this...I give up.  Well, maybe not.  Moderation is the key.  Happy eating and running.

Next Meeting is this Sunday September 27th, 2pm at Cara Greenspan's home. Email Cara for address.

The next book selected is Death with Interruptions (Paperback, 256 pages) (Jose Saramago, translated by Margaret Jull Costa)

Starred Review. Saramago's philosophical page-turner hinges on death taking a holiday. And, Saramago being Saramago, he turns what could be the stuff of late-night stoner debate into a lucid, playful and politically edgy novel of ideas. For reasons initially unclear, people stop dying in an unnamed country on New Year's Day. Shortly after death begins her break (death is a woman here), there's a catastrophic collapse in the funeral industry; disruption in hospitals of the usual rotational process of patients coming in, getting better or dying; and general havoc. There's much debate and discussion on the link between death, resurrection and the church, and while the clandestine traffic of the terminally ill into bordering countries leads to government collusion with the criminal self-styled maphia, death falls in love with a terminally ill cellist. Saramago adds two satisfying cliffhangers-how far can he go with the concept, and will death succumb to human love? The package is profound, resonant and-bonus-entertaining. (Oct.)

Check out www.half.ebay.com for this book.  You can find the hard back for as low as $5.99.  I've used this web site and have been very happy with the purchases I made.
