Greetings!
Here we are moving into spring, and the sun is shining and the birds are singing.  As spring ushers in a new season, I hope you have a spring in your step and are moving in a good, positive direction, looking forward to all that this year still has to offer.

The Word

The word of the month is Passion.  Passion is what I feel everyday when I get up in the morning and my feet hit the floor.  Passion is the ability to love whatever you do no matter how much money or how much time you spending doing it.  Passion is what I'm feeling this second.  As I speak my words of passion, I'm painting and I love my work.  I work with a passion.  I know a lot of other people that work with a passion.  John Coltrane had a passion.  When John Coltrane would walk to the supermarket with Alice Coltrane shopping for groceries for the kids, he'd be playing his flute at the same time. When Derek Trucks is sitting on the bus, chillin' with a funky feelin,' and watching a sports program, he's practicing... playing his guitar.  When Babe Ruth would take a break and go on holiday, he'd be thinking of baseball strategy.  When Alex Karras would sit at home in Detroit MI, the famed Detroit Lion, he'd be thinking about how to pass block.

I got passion when I'm working on my new record.  I've got passion when I'm working out at the gym.  I know a lot people have passion and sympathy for our brothers and sisters in Haiti -- all over the world who have problems -- passion for helping others.  I always thought as I got older, my passion would grow weaker, but I was wrong.  It grows stronger.  The passion to be a good artist -- to leave a legacy -- for people to enjoy later -- good music, good art - just something that would brighten up your day.  Passion is the gas my engine thrives on.

From the Road

Well, in my world, a lot of things have been going on.  I've been doing a great great record with an old friend and an Atlanta legend around the world, Ms. Caroline Aiken.  She and I have a history, but it's been awhile.  I hooked up with her again when I played the 'Circle of Love Benefit Concert for Christina' in January. We've always kept in contact, and we found out that night we have a strong regional connection -- with her, myself, Charlie Wooton, and Tomi Martin.  It's crazy how love can bring everyone together.  We did a live album on March 6th at Eddie's Attic.  The day before, I played with my sister, Ronda Runa Scott, at the historic Grant's Lounge, in Macon, GA.  It's the home of Otis Redding, and, it looked like it did in 1947.  My sister and I, we brought the house down with some great blues and funk.  It was a wonderful night.  Also, on my travels, I played a great gig with Charlie Wooton at Shorty's Pizza.  The day after that, I had a Master Drum Clinic in Athens, GA at The Globe.  I had about 14 students ranging in age of 7 to 60 for my 3 hour class.  I covered gigging, the groove theorem, the historical perspective of drumming, gave them a whole list of names of great drummers to check out, like Max Roach, Art Blakey, Buddy RichStix Hooper, and some new drummers.  After the clinic, I caught a plane to NY to the renown BB King's.  I had Geoff Hartwell on guitar with Anthony Candullo on bass.  And we played for the Big House Foundation.  And, as I'm writing this, I'm actually on the road on my way back to NY for a mini tour in the area with the Yonrico Scott Band -- an all-star band with Kofi Burbridge,Todd Smallie, Mace Hibbard, and newest member, Nick Johnson.  We're playing The Bayou in Mt. Vernon, NY, Jerky's in Providence, RI, (with opener, Funkatronic), and in NYC, the Allman Brothers' Hittin' the Note party.

As I've written before, the biggest thing in my life right now is my new record.  I've been working on it diligently.  The great Rev. Oliver Wells from Cocoa Beach, Florida, came up and just graced me with some of the best tunes I've ever played -- one is a dedication to my late mother, Ruth Scott, 'Not Alone...' which features my sister, Ronda, and I singing a duet.  Also, we did a song which is a little surprise feature, called 'Not Only a Smile.'   And we got some old Yonrico Scott Band stuff on there -- some of my classic drum-crazy stuff, and a lot of little surprises so I can't wait to get the record out there and have everyone hear it.

Some great news for me, my wonderful sister, Ronda, is moving to Atlanta.  And we're going to see what happens as we collaborate more often.  All her kids are grown and she's excited and ready to come sing and work together.  So, I'm very excited to have her in my world and have this opportunity.  Also, I've got a new project with Laura Reed.  She's a wonderful new singer and artist from South Africa.  She has a really nice blend of Latin, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban grooves, with Todd Smallie on bass, and Buzz Amato (formerly Curtis Mayfield M.D.) on keyboards, and more special guests TBA.  We're just getting started, and we've got gigs popping up across the country with festivals, venues like the  Neighborhood Theater in Charlotte, and others TBA.

Yes, I wake up in the morning with that passion.  And, I go to bed at night with that passion.  Stay in touch!  www.yonricoscott.com.
What I'm Listening to...

I'm listening to Etta James, The Heart of a Woman.  I love Etta James.  She reminds me of my mom, and my mom reminds me of Etta James.  A couple of the tunes are, of course, the famed, My Old Flame, Good Morning Heartache, I Only Have Eyes For You, and You Don't Know What Love Is (one of my favorite tunes of all time).  Another artist I'm listening to is Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention.  A famous tune, Montana, a little hit called, Dirty Love.  Another artist I'm checking out is Funkadelic from Detroit, MI, with Super Stupid, Back In Our Minds.  I'm also listening to Public EnemyShow 'em Whatcha Got.  Also, Gregory Tardy, and Forgiveness, Whenever Wherever WhateverAsk Me Now, and Prisoner of Love.  I'm also checkin' out Hunter S. Thompson, On The Road to Las Vegas, Savage LucyNight On The Town/Drug Frenzy at The Circus.  Another one is Herbie Hancock, Hang Up Your Hang Ups and Chameleon. Also, James Ulmer with a great album, 'Memphis Blood, The Sun Sessions,' and the tunes, Spoonful, Evil, Death Letter, and Money.  Also, I'm listening to Jerry Douglas.  I love Jerry Douglas' Skip Hop, & Wobble album, with Big Bug Shuffle, Squeezy Pig, Monkey Bay.  Also, Joe Cocker, Sticks and Stones.  And, the great John Coltrane featuring Johnny Hartman, They Say It's Wonderful, and Dedicated to You.  There's a lot more, but I'll close with, John Scofield and Pat Metheny, No Matter What, and Everybody's Party.

Thank you so much for your everlasting support,
