My Trip to the Grammy's...

I was blessed to go out to L.A. for the 52nd Annual Grammy's. I flew into L.A. And, I'm very proud of myself. I basically road-managed my trip with the help of Blake Budney, the manager for the Derek Trucks Band. I got to L.A. two days before the event, stayed at the Sheraton near the airport, rented a nice car and drove down to pick up my tickets at the... (Read more) |

Greetings! I hope today finds you happy and living life in a positive and uplifting way. And, I hope you enjoy reading my newsletter! |
The Word
The word of the month is Positive. To be positive is to be always sure that you feel and are doing the right thing... to always have your mind that you want to step one step forward... go out of your way to be nice to people. When you're nice to people and you have a smile, people smile at you. They can't help it. It's intoxicating. It's addictive. I thrive on being positive. When I wake up every morning, I'm excited to wake up. When I go to bed every night, I'm excited to go to bed every night.
I always feel when I'm playing drums on stage, that it's such a positive thing I'm getting a chance to do for people, by helping them have a happier day, a more blessed moment. And, at the same token, I feel I am the luckiest man in the world every time I grab a drum stick. Because here I am, able to go to all the nooks and crannies of the world and play music for people, and I get paid! How much more positive can that be? How much more positive can that be to play for the President, or to play for a nursing home? Positive! |
From the Road
The biggest tales from the road is I'm in the studio. I'm on the phone, dictating this article while I'm at Sit 'N Spin Studio in Greenville, SC. And, I've got a 'Grammy Band' grouped together for the masterpiece we are producing. It's me, Kofi Burbridge, Todd Smallie, Mace Hibbard, and a few surprises to come...two of which I can share, I am greatly moved to record with Rev. Oliver Wells and my sister, Ronda Scott. These sessions will be the highlight of my new record.
Today was actually the first day and I did a video which you can find on Facebook. It went really good today. We got two songs recorded and they're masterpieces... and I'm happy with that. Today was a day of everybody getting sounds - getting comfortable in the studio. They've never recorded there before. Myself, I've been recording in that studio a couple years. Once we got everything EQ'd... tweaked, we worked on a tune I call, Confused. I laugh every time I say it... Blues & Confused. I'm not playing any drum solos. That's not what I'm about on this record. I'm trying to just play those grooves. And then another tune today was, Open Spirit. Now, they're telling me it's going good and they're ready to go. So we're going to lay down four tracks tomorrow with sax. And those are the only instrumental tunes on the record. The rest will be with vocal and I'm singing most of the vocal on all the tunes. We're going to do some real nice stuff and I'm looking forward to it. Making new music, I get real excited. It's a great studio. And, I'm also going to do an instructional video in that studio. And, we just did a soundtrack for two studios in Greenville, and I'm being highlighted in The Greenville Newspaper on Sunday.
I've been playing in NY, getting my groove on in New York City. I've been playing with a great young, guitar player, named Geoff Hartwell. And he's an excellent slide guitar player and he's friends with Sonny Landreth. In his band, he has Andy Aledort who plays with Dickey Betts, me, and a couple different bass players. And it's a good band, so hopefully we'll be able to do that again. And I'm building a band - a virtual band with Laura Reed. The Yonrico Scott Band is going on a northeast tour in New York and Rhode Island - New York City, a few spots outside of New York City, Providence... We're excited about playing. We've got a lot of new music, a new flavor, and everybody is excited about playing. Stay in touch! www.yonricoscott.com. |
What I'm Listening to...
I've been delving back into some old funk because I'm working on my new record, and I've been checking out Marcus Miller, The Panther, is one of my favorite tunes on the planet. Another tune of his is Mr. Pastorius. And I'm also listening to Maceo Parker because Maceo is a master of the party funk. I'm into all of his music. Shake Everything You Got is great! Also, Meshell Ndegeocello... I'm back on her again, The Womb, and, Who is He and Who is He to You (that's an old Bill Withers tune she just does incredibly). Another person I've been really checking out and is getting me off is Zakir Hussain. I've listened to him a lot because he's a great tabla player and I really want that kind of flavor. Another person I've been really checkin out is Wes Montgomery and Buddy Montgomery, Stranger in Paradise. Also, War, The Cisco Kid, City Country City, Where Were You At, and of course, my favorite, The World is a Ghetto, which I sing quite frequently.
I've also been listening to some funky commercial stuff, Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace; some of the gospel greats, Shirley Ceaser, God Bless Us All. And, I'm listening to Willie Dickson, Backdoor Man, You Shook Me, The Same Thing; The Who... I love The Who. Keith Moon's drumming is to die for... Heaven and Hell, Tattoo, I'm a Boy - are some of my favorite listening tunes. And, two more, The Roots, just to talk about that funk - I listen to all their stuff. And for drumming... the great, Jack Dejohnette, 7B, You Can't Get There, and, There Was Light. |
It is the love and support of everyone in my life that means so much. Thank you so much for your everlasting support,
