Greetings! As this is released, I am attending the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards in LA. Did you hear the news tonight? The Derek Trucks Band (dTb) won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album for our 2009 release, Already Free! |
The Word The word of the month is, Respect. Respect is also a word Aretha Franklin used in her renowned song from the 60's. But it's more than a notion. Respect is something you extend to someone who is not just younger than you or older than you. Respect is what you earn... respect is not owed to you. But, off the cuff, everyone deserves their due respect. In my situation, as a drummer, I have learned over the years, not to just have respect for what I consider a hard artform such as jazz and classical music, but simple music, as well. Simple music soothes the heart of the masses, so it gets its due respect. Respect is also for the families and the people in Haiti who are going through one of the most difficult times in their lives. Respect is something we give to the men and women who go over to Afghanistan and fight for our country. Respect is also something I just give to someone who gives me a kind word or a smile. Respect. |
From the Road
As you may recall, the hiatus of the dTb continues, but still as any band that has been together for sixteen years, there's a lot of business still going on. One being, we're excited to be releasing a live CD soon. That's being mixed by the great, Chris Shaw, as I write this. It's going to feature two performances we did with horns in Chicago of 2009. Also, high on our list... now comes the Grammy's, the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. And, I am in L.A. to represent the Derek Trucks Band at the Grammy's enjoying the celebration and feeling the vibe of all the different artists from all the different genres. We just got the news tonight that we won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album (Already Free), and I've been in LA since January 29th, to check it all out.
I am moving in a bright, new direction, getting ready for life as a solo performer / studio musician in 2010, which I've been doing for years and years. So I'm just getting back into my old mode. I just played with Oliver Wood of the Wood Brothers. I just played a great performance at Eddie's Attic for Christina Gorski's benefit which I was excited to partner back up again with the wonderful singer/songwriter, Caroline Aiken. One thing to note, Caroline, myself, Charlie Wooton, and Tomi Martin, are doing a live recording on March 6, at Eddie's Attic (see my dates above for details). Also, I've been playing out all around Atlanta with a new side project, Funk Extreme. I've got a Detroit-based version of Funk Extreme featuring Ike Stubblefield and Grant Green, Jr. It's a three-prong Detroit attack! And then I have another version of Funk Extreme featuring Mace Hibbard and others. Outside of Atlanta, I've got dates with Charles Hedgepath in Greenville, SC, and Shannon Hoover, who I've been playing with for years. I'm playing with Grammy-winner, Earl Klugh, at his 7th Annual Weekend of Jazz at The Broadmoor, in Colorado Springs, CO. That performance will include Al Jarreau, Kirk Whalum, and Gerald Albright.
So, there are a lot of good things going on in the musical world - not just for me, but for all the great artists I've mentioned, and those whom I may be kind of separated from, but we're together in our hearts. You can look me up on MySpace, Twitter, and Facebook (see left column for links). And, check this out! I also have a video channel on YouTube. And today I did a LIVE SKYPE video message for you, my loved ones and fans (Sun Jan 31st) from the Grammy's which was recorded by Genevieve ( Gen Cole).
If you look at my dates, you can see more of the great music I've got planned... like the gig with Laura Reed where we're going to do some crazy stuff, like some Brazilian/Latin/Spanish/African Funk - so look out for that. And one last mention -- on the horizon I've got a series of gigs up in the Northeast with the great guitar player, Geoff Hartwell from the Providence, RI/Upstate NY area. We're partnering up with Sonny Landreth. So, look for me up North, out West, here in the Southeast, just look for me! And, continue with me on my journey via my new website at www.yonricoscott.com. |
What I'm Listening to...
As I've been getting ready for a new record, I've been trying to saturate myself with just a lot of different styles. One of the first things I've been listening to is Mahavishnu Orchestra, Birds of Fire, and Mahavishnu Orchestra, Thousand Island Park. I've also been listening to the late Marvin Gaye... the classic, What's Going On, and the 'Magic Collection by Marvin Gaye.' I've also been listening to Lightnin' Hopkins, trying to get that blues thing into my system. He's wrote a song the dTb always played, Feel So Bad. Another one is Junior Wells', Come On In This House, which is a record that features Derek when Derek was about 17 or 18 years old - it's a great record. I'm also listening to John Zorn, who I've just always loved, Batman, which I actually nicknamed, Black Man!
Another one... Johnny Cash, Let Him Roll, America, and Another Day in Paradise. And I'm trying to get back with the real stuff with the great, Jerry Garcia, Don't Let Go. I love Jerry Garcia. The Don't Let Go record is great. Jaco Pastorius' first album, The Birthday Concert... featuring one of my friends on drums, Peter Erskine. Jaco, a great jazz musician and composer died at age 35 in 1987. And finally, Hank Jones, brother of Thad Jones and Elvin Jones, on a wonderful record with, The Summary, Lady Luck, and Kids Are Pretty People. And, last but not least, Magic Slim and The Teardrops' Talk to Me Baby, and I Can't Hold Out! |
We are comfortably stepping into 2010, and anything can happen. Get ready! We are going to ZEN in 2010! Thank you for your everlasting support,
Yonrico Scott Yonrico Scott Band |
