The Word The word of the month is change. As we all know, this year, 2009, we had a changing of the ranks in our government. Our country is looked at in the world as a new land -- as a positive entity. As far as world politics is concerned, we are looked up to again. This is a wonderful feeling. Change is also a good word this month because as some of you know, the Derek Trucks Band is taking a hiatus in 2010. Derek, Kofi, Mike, Count, Todd, myself, and all our family and friends, are going through some of the biggest changes of our lives. My mother, Ruth, always said God never gives you more than you can handle. So, change is good. Often you don't know why things happen, and then you step back and you can see 'everythinig happens for a reason.' That is such a cliche statement, but it's true. You must accept change with a bright outlook -- knowing you're going to step into it with pride and dignity and smile. Everything with change is not adversity. Everything with change can be good. |
From the Road
The dTb has had plans for a hiatus in 2010 for some time, so the groove and the rhythm of the band are at an all-time high. We're planning to release a new live record, an anthology -- a look back at our statement in 2009 -- the biggest year in the band's career. We went to four continents and twelve countries. We played for the President of the United States and other dignitaries all over the world. And I'm proud to say we had standing ovations all over the world.
On our latest tour, the first night we played was in Durham, NC, and immediately you could feel the rhythm. When we came out, the first tune we performed was 'Sweet Inspiration.' When you're going through a change, every tune and every note you play is symbolic and has meaning. When we played 'Kam-ma-lay' -- I thought about how 'Kam-ma-lay' was something I used to chant back in the day when I played with Simon Carter & Northside during drum solos -- and it end up being the title of a dTb tune. The second day, we played at the Palace Theater in Stamford, CT. It was Halloween, and this was the first Halloween we didn't wear costumes. We decided collectively since it was next to our last run, we would just go and do our thing and play our best. That tour was so symbolic and the tour upcoming in December in Atlanta, will be the most symbolic of the dTb's career because of the changes taking place.
Now for my band, the YSB. One of the most wonderful times I've had in a long time was at the Bear Creek Music Festival in November. I'm proud to say, we were featured with bands such as Soulive, Galactic, Lotus, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, my man, Kofi Burbridge, was a musician-at-large, Benevento/Russo Duo, Brock Butler, Perpetual Groove, Dubconscious, Cadillac Jones, and on and on... it was a wonderful celebration of funk. I can't tell you the last time I felt such a positive vibration from a festival. God blessed us with beautiful weather. YSB played at 2:00pm Sunday afternoon, and it was glorious. We started off with a tune called 'Butterfly' and ended with 'Snoopy's Red Baron.' I had several special guests that sat in. At one time there were ten or eleven people on stage, including Eric Krasno, Matt Grondin, Nigel Hall, Sam Kininger, Ryan Zoidis, Roosevelt (from Lee Boys), and YSB's own Mace Hibbard and Kofi Burbridge... all really great musicians. It was one of the most uplifting moments I've had in a long time.
But, going back to the theme of change, I had an opportunity to play with 7-time Grammy nominated, twice Grammy winning, legendary Earl Klugh. And I had the privilege of recording with Earl Klugh on his album, Spice of Life (which was nominated for a Best Pop Instrumental Grammy). I got a chance to play with him at the Daytona Beach International Festival in Daytona Beach, FL. It was great. You can catch us together again on 'Good Day Atlanta,' on December 2, 2009. I feel sometimes I am the luckiest man in the world because I get a chance to play with some of the best musicians in the world. |
What I'm Listening to...
Since my last newsletter, I've been listening to 'As It Is' and 'The Gathering Sky,' by Pat Metheny Group; Reggae's Peter Tosh with 'Legalize It', and 'Til Your Well Runs Dry'; also 'Almendra' from the album, Peruchin, by Poncho Sanchez; and the album, Project Z (by the band, Project Z) because I've been missing my friend, Ricky Kellar, so much. That album also features the Reverend Oliver Wells, (who's going to produce my next record), Jimmy Herring and Jeff Sipe. The tunes I'm listening to from that album are, 'Ragging Torrent' and 'Guitargument 2.' And, finally, I'm also listening to the album, Return to Forever and 'The Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy,' featuring Chick Corea, Lenny White, Al DiMeola, and Stanley Clarke. |
In closing, I feel blessed to have you as a member of my musical family. Thank you so much for your everlasting support,
Yonrico Scott Yonrico Scott Band |
