The Word
The word of the month is patience.  In every walk of life, in everything that you do, you must show the ability to be patient.  As a musician, you have to be patient so you can learn different styles and move with the changing times.  In our present economy, you must be patient because things are going to get better.  When you have life challenges, obstacles, things that knock at your door, you can't be hasty to make a decision.  You have to show patience and durability in order to sustain.

One other component of patience, is also the ability to trust.  Patience and trust should go hand in hand, especially when you think of being in a band with other players, or being in a relationship.  For instance, you're playing a song, and as a drummer, my job is to be the foundation of the group.  And I have to trust.  I have to be patient and allow the groove to settle.  Also, I have to trust in my fellow musicians to be able to use my foundation as a catapult to make it groove.  So patience has a lot of components, especially when it comes to life, music, and relationships.
From the Road
This month has been an enlightening one.  All my friends, family, students, contemporaries, everyone I know, is aware I've been self-promoting.  And this month I've been playing locally in Atlanta with Lefty Williams.  After playing with Lefty, I got on a plane and went out to Wyoming for the Snowy Range Music Festival in Laramie. We played and it was just another day with the Derek Trucks Band and a chance to introduce a new audience to our music. The enthusiasm of the people made it worth every second. And the next day, we catapulted across country and went to the Krannert Center Guitar Festival in Urbana, IL.  And, there we got to hang out with some great guitar players and musicians.  And in that middle of that run, we ended up at my alma mater, The University of Kentucky, in Lexington, KY, where I went to college back in 1975-1979.  I got a chance to hang out with Bob Brant, one of my old compadres back when I went to college there.  And, it's interesting, I'm going to do a couple trio gigs with Bob and a couple protg young guitar players there in Lexington.  That was a really good day for me because I got to go back and give something back to my alma mater. And, the next day, we played Oberlin College at Finney Chapel. And it was a great day for me because I got a chance to hang with one of the greatest piano players I've ever played with... Mr. Dan Wall, who's a professor there and also teaches at the Cleveland Conservatory.  Dan is also the stellar piano player of the John Abercrombie Band.  He and I played together at Walter Mitty's for years and years.  We also hung out with Clive Davis, one of the greatest American record producers in the industry.  The following day, we played at the Classic Center in Athens, GA, and I hadn't been there since recording on Live In The Classic City with Widespread Panic (2002).

Playing there this time we had an 'all-out get crazy jam' with Jimmy Herring, all the guys from MoFro, Mace Hibbard, Kevin Hide from the dTb's horn section, and with Duane Trucks on 2nd drums... it was such an awesome night seeing Derek and Jimmy playing together.  And then the last night of this tour, which was the most enlightening night, was in Nashville, TN, where we played on the steps of City Hall and Jack Pearson opened for us.  He's a great guitar player who's played with Jimmy Smith and also the Allman Brothers.  And to hear Derek play with him was awesome.  We also did the Yonrico Scott Switchero Trick. And that's where in the middle of the song, we switch drummers.  We do it right in the middle of the groove.  We do it to where if you weren't watching it being done, you couldn't tell the drummers switched.  You see, the drummer playing goes to the left, and the drummer entering goes to the right.  So all you have to do is overlap the snare drum and the groove combines.  It's a beautiful effect.  And after we did Nashville, I went and played with the Yonrico Scott Band at Camp Jam that was in Jersey.  It was wonderful.  Kofi Burbridge and I went and we played with Dave Shultz and Geoff Achison, and after we did that we catapulted to Long Island to play at Bobbique's.  I am lucky to play with one of the most phenomenal bands in the world, The Derek Trucks Band.  Today, as I write this, I am in Japan touring with the Doobie Brothers, with the biggest legendary promoter ever, Mr. Udo.  He promotes everyone from Eric Clapton to the Rolling Stones to Cap Calloway, and to the Derek Trucks Band.  By the time you read this, we will have worked with Mr. Udo...in the presence of greatness.
What I'm Listening to...
This month has been a really crazy month because I've been listening to some really abstract stuff.  I've been listening to the great Eric Dolphy from the record, Don't Blame Me, featuring Eric Dolphy in Europe.  Another thing is Frank Zappa and The Mothers -- Dirty Love -- and just some of their great tunes.  Also, I've been listening to the great Freddie Hubbard from The Body & The Soul record -- and his Straight Life record.  He just passed away and was one of the most wonderful trumpet players in the world.  I actually played with him in Atlanta in 1987 at a club on Lindbergh... it was me, Duwee Sampson and Ojeda Penn.  So I love me some Freddie Hubbard.  Another great player I'm listening to and I played with recently, Geoff Achison.  He's a wonderful player from Melbourne, Australia...he has a new album out called One Ticket To Ride.  I've been listening to Geoff because I like him and I just like the way he plays.  Just another thing to listen to to get some different flavor.  Last but not least, on the classical side, I've been listening to Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony because I just want to reminisce and I was just at my alma mater, The University of Kentucky.  And my first experience with a professional orchestra was there at Lexington, Kentucky with a conductor named George Zach and I played the cymbal part to Tchaikovsky's 4th (which I had to go lift weights for a couples weeks to get ready for it).
Again, thank you for your everlasting support!
