Greetings!
I hope my email finds you happy and enjoying a wonderful day today. And I hope to see you at a show real soon! |
The Word This month's word is 'spirituality' because I wouldn't be who I am without spirituality. And that is all because of my mother and her strong devotion to the church and how I watched her play for nothing every Sunday. And she would take me and my sister to the church. And I would have singers come over to the house like the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, Sam Cook and Johnny Taylor would come by my house and I didn't know who they were. I knew that when my mother sang, I always got a tingle in my toes -- it moved me even at 5 years old. I knew it was something special. Like the first time I heard Derek...I knew he was something special -- and I thought, "Wow, he moved me like my mother moved me right down to my toes." The first time I heard Mahalia Jackson...the first time I saw Stevie Wonder...I played with Stevie Wonder...you're just going to feel that spirit. And everytime I play, I got spirit right down to my toes.

From the Road In August, the dTb went to the White House and met the President, President Obama. We saw the Red Room, the Green Room, the East Room, a lot of the paintings and pictures on the walls and learned of their history. We also saw the florist shop, the bakery... and just got to go to a lot of the places most people don't go. And when I walked into the White House, one of the first pictures I saw was the Obama's with Stevie Wonder. And I was like, 'all right now, we have arrived.'
Another good tale from the road, we were privileged to play on Good Morning America on ABC (video clip). We played 'Down in The Flood' for the Internet. And we played 'Get What You Deserve' for the TV audience, and we played two bumpers -- bumpers are small 20 second pieces of music that lead you into commercials. And one was 'Already Free,' and another was a solo of 'Down in The Flood.' We had a 5:00 am call and we all wore makeup and I am very proud of my dTb members because we were all very professional.
And after that, right away we got in a car and went over to the Sloan Kettering Hospital. We played for the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for Pediatrics, and we just sat in this room that was dedicated by the father and mother of Andrew Tow (The Claire Tow Pediatric Pavilion). This was my second time playing there. And we played for kids going through chemo with cancer. And we were able to sit in those chairs and play for them and brighten their day. I was so proud of the band. After playing one of the biggest TV shows in the world, we didn't go to the hotel room. We went right to this cancer ward and played for these babies that were sick and going through this terrible situation. And I am just very very proud to be a part of gentlemen who would take this space and time to give to kids in this way. |
What I'm Listening to...
The first person I've been listening to and always loved is Eric Dolphy. The tunes that really get me all excited are 'Don't Blame Me,' 'Miss Ann,' and 'Laura.' The second person I've been listening to a lot just because I'm trying to get that extreme funk vibe is Erykah Badu, and I love her funk vocals over so simplistic funk grooves on 'Baduizm.' The third person I've been listening to is Frank Zappa and the Mothers, 'Dirty Love,' 'Fifty-fifty,' 'Montana' -- just some basic Zappa. He's one of the best composers that ever lived. Also, Gil Evans Orchestra... 'Sister Sadie' and 'Where Flamingos Fly.' Another one is Koko Taylor's 'Wang Dang Doodle.'
I love that! Another one is Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio's 'Hot House' and all of his anthology record. I'm also delving into some old time country --Hank Jones' Upon Reflection record with 'The Summary,' 'Little Rascals on the Rock,' 'Lady Luck,' and 'You Mean What You Say.' And the last one is Jimmy McGriff's Electric Funk record and his Soul Sugar record... just killing that funk when I was getting ready for my band, Funk Extreme's 8/28 date at the Five Spot in Atlanta. Before I play extreme funk, I have to listen to the funk master, Jimmy McGriff. |
