Greetings!

I want to thank you so much for allowing me to express myself in words and to let you know what's going on with my life in my music world and social world.  And thank you for reading and listening and please go out and hear live music!

The Word
This month's word is 'versatility.'  Versatility is the ability to adjust and react to any situation put in front of you -- may it be socially, environmentally, or musically -- any kind of situation and you're able to perform at 100%.  Quite frankly, what I've been doing as far as being versatile is adapting to the changing environments in Europe.  One day, I'm in Germany and I'm eating certain type of foods,  the next day, I'm in Spain and I'm having to walk down a certain side of the street; and, the next day, I'm in Italy and I have to understand the history and cultural differences.  And to be a musician and be versatile means to be able to play all styles of music -- to be able to adapt -- not just be a funk drummer, a blues drummer or a rock drummer, but to be a musician -- be a 'drummer drummer.'  So, versatility as far as socially means being able to bend and able to break sometimes and not judge at first glance... be able to sit back and observe situations - be open to new ideas.
From the Road
As a lot of you know, I have been touring Europe for the whole month of July.  I had the greatest pleasure with the first landing in Rome where I took another walk through Rome's historic downtown and went to the Vatican.  I've never been to the Vatican.  I actually walked where Kings and Queens have walked.  It took the hands of thousands to build this incredible piece of architecture.  I also got another chance to go to the coliseum - to the ruins. Myself and the band we just took a field trip.  It was wonderful. Derek is one who likes to experiment and see new sites and art.  And it's so wonderful playing with somebody who loves to have his mind, his heart, his soul and his artistic talent open.

Another tale from the road is we played the Montreux Jazz Festival.  And this festival is produced by Mr. Claude Nobs who lives in the Swiss Mountains.  It was really great to look at all the artifacts from all the past festivals.  We also got a personal preview by Claude, himself, of Chickenfoot, an all-star band put together just for Montreux with Joe Satriani, Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, and Chad Smith, the drummer from Red Hot Chili Peppers.  I got a photo with Claude,  and you can find that on facebook.

This is interesting, in 1980, there was a cultural exchange of musicians between Montreux and Atlanta.  And I was a delegate from Atlanta with Peabo Bryson, Andy Young, and the mayor, Maynard Jackson - we all went from Atlanta to Montreux, and Claude remembered that.  That was really great.

The next stop was the North Sea Jazz Festival which is the Who's Who of jazz musicians from all over the world.  We got a chance to rub shoulders with Herbie Hancock, once again, McCoy Tyner, Erykah Badu, George Duke, and others.  I worked out with Joshua Redmond, hung out with my friends from Atlanta.  And, we played right before John Scofield.  They loved us and I think we'll be going there for years and years to come.

I've been to Europe probably ten times in my life, and this was the first time I was able to pull it all in and see it through the portholes of planes, trains, and automobiles, seeing the mountains, hanging out with people in streets and yards... just  a wonderful experience.

What I'm Listening to...
Donny Hathaway's Everything is Everything is the album I've really been burnin' up lately.  It features Willie Weeks on bass.  Also, I've got Eric Errolgarner in rotation.  He wrote Misty, Mambo Combo, Red Top, April in Paris... wonderful wonderful piano player.  He left us a long time ago.  I'm also burnin up the Funkadelics', Maggie Rain... see where Snoop Dog got that groove from... Also I'm listening to some Grateful Dead - live shows from Europe 1972,  Havana Cuba, ca 1957, a great compilation CD (listen), and, of course, Herbie Hancock, who I just hung out with at North Sea Jazz Festival.   It's a tribute to Miles Davis, and I'm also listening to his CD, Thrust.  Other albums include James Taylor's, One Man Band, a great anthology of all his greatest stuff.   Another one...Jim Hall, a great jazz guitar player, You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To.  And finally, Louis Hayes, one of the greatest drummers that ever played on the planet, St. Peter's Walk.
