Notes from Virginia
Greetings!
So as not to worry those who may not have heard what
happened, let me begin by saying Craig is on the mend and is expected to make a
full recovery.
One month ago, on September 8th, Craig had a
serious accident. He was working the
American idol concert at the Sovereign Center here in Reading, and during load
out after the show he fell backwards off the stage. He fell onto the concrete floor from the 6'
high stage onto his back and head. He
had a grand mal seizure and sustained numerous injuries including a mild
traumatic brain injury and various fractures to his skull, shoulder blade and
back - all on his right side.
Thanks to the speedy response of his Union President,
Sovereign Center staff and ultimately paramedics that were still onsite with an
ambulance due the concert, he was attended to very quickly and rushed to
Reading Hospital.
He spent three days in ICU, two days on the trauma ward and
was then in the rehab section for about a week.
Last week he had surgery at Jefferson Hospital to repair the orbital roof
fracture and entrapped eye muscle which was causing him double vision. This rare and delicate surgery was done
without feared neuro complications and his vision is improving. However, it may be months to know the
complete outcome of his eyesight. Dr.
Penne of Wills Eye and Dr. Evans, a neurosurgeon from Jefferson, are our
heroes.
Craig is getting stronger every day and is walking with a
cane for now. Other than some short term
memory issues, he is doing fine cognitively and is definitely his old self
personality-wise, telling us exactly what he wants and how he wants it. Now that the eye surgery is behind him, he
will begin outpatient PT, OT and speech therapies beginning next week.
Troy and Nicole have been amazing in getting all our work
done this past month while Craig and I have been otherwise occupied and we
cannot thank them enough. We'd also like
to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers, cards and arrangements,
guidance and support. We are blessed to
have all of you in our lives.
In conclusion, this was one "Stories from the Trenches" we
wish did not occur. We are, however, so
very well aware of just how lucky Craig was - and is, realizing how much worse
things could have been.
Until next time... Wishing
You All The Best!

Just like everyone else, we're going green here at VA
Productions. One of the ways that we are
environmentally friendly is with the addition of LED light fixtures to our
inventory. Our Altman Spectra Pars are
all LED lighting instruments that take the place of a 500 watt par but only
consume 50 watts. The other "cool" part
of these "green" lights is that no matter how long they've been on, they are
cool to the touch. That's right, less
wattage and less heat and they can create millions of neat colors without the
use of gels too. So the next time you
need some lighting for an event, ask us about our "Cool green" Spectra Pars.

Meet...Berks County Community Foundation Building Green!
On September 14, Berks County Community Foundation held a ribbon cutting
ceremony which officially marked the opening of its new headquarters and
community conference center, the first LEED-Certified green building in Reading. This building has many cool green features such as a green roof, a cistern to collect rainwater to be used to flush the toilets and irrigate landscaping, radiant heating and cooling, windsocks to bring fresh air in the building, various recycled materials...the list goes on and on! In addition to what went IN the building, over 95% of the waste that came out during construction was recycled. Berks County Community Foundation has really set a precedent for future new construction in the City of Reading.
Aside from all the green features, Kevin Murphy, President of Berks County Community Foundation, says, "The keystone of this whole project is the
community conference center, which has a 30-seat board room and conference rooms
in various sizes and configurations. Each room has built-in audio-visual
capabilities and is available for community groups to hold their meetings."
To request use of a room, contact Sally Ott at 610.685.2223 or via email at sallyo@bccf.org.
Over the course of construction, VA Productions worked closely with Heidi Williamson, Vice President for Communications and Executive Director of the Community Indicators Project, to videotape the progress as this building came together. Click here to view the video!
You can also contact Sarah MacAusland at 610.685.2223 or via email sarahm@bccf.org if you'd like to do a group tour and see the building in person.
In addition to the Building Green video, VA Productions is proud to have partnered with Berks County Community Foundation on many of their other videos and events over the past years.

Staff Stats - Nicole
"VA
Productions, this is Nicole." So who IS
this Nicole girl who answers the phone anyway?
Nicole was
born in Northern NJ and lived the first 6 years of her life there. At that point her family moved to Bushkill,
PA located in the Poconos.
When the time
came to choose a college, Nicole knew she belonged at Penn State University as
soon as she set eyes on Beaver Stadium.
She graduated in 2005 with a BA in Telecommunications and a minor in
Italian.
After college
Nicole moved in with her then boyfriend now husband Rob. Since Rob was already working and living
there, she began her job search in the Reading area. She found VA Productions and was lucky to start her career in the field she majored in immediately after graduation.
Today Nicole
lives in Reading (in the house where VA Productions used to be!) with her
husband and their beautiful daughter Kenley.
Kenley was born in October of 2008 (when the Phillies were in the World
Series!) and she is by far the gem of the Fryer family.
At VA
Productions Nicole assists in producing videos and takes on many other tasks
but her primary role is editing. You
will definitely meet Nicole in some way if you have a video project with VA
Productions.

A Helping Hand

The people of Berks
County benefit from the services of Berks County Community Foundation,a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1994. By providing grants to organizations
that address critical and emerging needs in the community, and by
focusing the interest of philanthropists on those needs, the Community
Foundation provides for the future well being of the community.
The Community Foundation helps people to define their goals for personal philanthropy by developing a charitable giving strategy.
When that plan involves establishing a charitable gift fund, the
Community Foundation offers services for administering and managing
those funds.
The VA Productions, Inc. Charitable Fund was established with Berks County Community Foundation in 2002 and has proudly contributed nearly $100,000 to non-profit organizations far and wide.
