                                        JulyJuly's Announcements

New MCH Director
We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Tracy Kedian has accepted the position as the MCH Director. With her previous experience in residency education, she brings significant enthusiasm and expertise. Tracy has hit the ground running and has already instituted a new conference series for the rotation. Please join us in welcoming her to this new role.

ACGME Accreditation News
Congratulations to all of the faculty and residents on an excellent residency review! We have received a 4 year accreditation cycle and the Review Committee commended the program for its demonstrated substantial compliance with the ACGME's Requirements for Graduate Medical Education. This is excellent news as we continue to innovate in the program!

Lifelong Learning Curriculum

Core curriculum conference time will now be a formalized course on lifelong learning. Dr. Bob Baldor and Dr. Michael Kneeland will be providing a comprehensive course on evidence based medicine and a board review course on the first Tuesday afternoons protected educational time.  The first two sessions will be focused on giving leadership skills and expertise to the third year residents who will lead journal club throughout the remainder of the year.  The sessions will also include training in the ABFM Maintenance of Certification.

MASSAFP Resident Day at the State House, July 10

Curriculum Committee Report
The Curriculum Committee will begin a review of each of the areas of the curriculum. August's curriculum meeting will include a review of the procedural training of the residency. Resident feedback through Evalue will be reviewed of each meeting in the topic area so make sure to include in your evaluations any specific ideas for improvement and specific curricular areas that work well. This feedback is crucial to the residency's continuous improvement.

Executive Committee Report
The Executive Committee has approved a new policy format which will improve access to information at the time of need. The policy forms will be located on the residency drive. More on this next month.

Residency Selection Committee
The AAFP's annual National Conference of Family Medical Residents and Students took place this past weekend in Kansas City, MO. We saw lots of interest in UMass at the three-day Residency fair!
In attendance were our new chief residents (from left: Marco Cornelio (Barre), Kim Bombaci (HFHC) and Shaun Farraher (FHCW) as well as Dr. Stacy Potts and Michael Smith
.

In addition, feedback from our recent post match survey is being shared at each of the three health centers and some new ideas and improvements for the upcoming season are being implemented. We are looking forward to a terrific recruiting season!

Paul Sahd, DO, PGY-3
 Barre Family Health Center

Paul Sahd, DO graduated in 2010 from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and from Elizabethtown College with a BS degree in Biology.  Paul has an interest in politics and is actively interested in advocating for primary care. A Pennsylvania native, his personal interests include painting and outdoor activities.

Here are excerpts from those individuals who nominated Paul this month:

From our residents: "Paul always has a positive attitude and is always ready to help out. He had a very difficult month in May, taking extra shifts in the Pedi ED because they were short residents, taking extra health center call (even during his vacation week) all while his wife had a baby. Not sure how he managed to balance it all, but he did and never complained once!"

From Dr. Jeremiah: "Paul's awesome, a hard worker, a team player, has a positive attitude, is a great role model and teacher."

From Dr. Earls: "Paul is an excellent choice for this award. His calm and confident style is appreciated by his patients and our staff."

From Dr. Martin:  "I love the way Paul doctors.  He cares deeply about how well he's helping patients, and actively seeks out ways to learn and develop."

From Dr. Golding: "Paul is one of the most consistently positive residents I know. He is always excited about learning something new, embraces work with a robust work-ethic."

From Dr. Seymour:  "Paul's able to get along with all personality types.  Patients love him, residents seem to love him and attendings look forward to working with him."

Congratulations, Paul!
