News Around the Residency The "Must Know Info" of the WFMR May 2012 |
May Announcements
Senior Projects (submitted by Dr. Gilchrist)
PGY-3 residents should be wrapping up their senior projects and preparing for presenting at the June 12th Grand Rounds. We are looking forward to seeing all the hard work you have put into your projects.
PGY-2 residents should also be thinking about their senior projects. At this point in the year, second year residents should have identified a project, started a literature research and started to put together a needs assessment. Concept papers are due in July and should be sent to your project mentor, education director and Dr. Potts. If you have not been able to decide on a project yet, please speak to your education director or advisor.
New Intern Studies Traditional Chinese Medicine Incoming Hahnemann intern Marissa Hamrick writes:
"I spent the month of April in China learning about Traditional Chinese Medicine. I was mainly at the Yuetan Community Health Services Center in Beijing, receiving lectures and hands-on training in acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping (baguan), scraping (gua sha), and massage (tui na). I also was able to attend an international conference with several other family doctors. It was The 9th Scientific Conference of General Practice and Community Health."
"Marathon" Medicine
UMass was well represented at the medical tent at the Boston Marathon this year! Thanks to Dr. Jay Broadhurst for sharing his photos:

April 2012 Resident of the Month Larissa Calka, DO, PGY-3
Barre Family Health Center
Larissa graduated from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009. She received her BS in Biological Sciences from Cornell University and is originally from New York. Larissa's interests include gymnastics, ballet, writing children's stories and illustration.
From our residents: "I nominate Larissa. Everyone was impressed this month while she was on health center chief and meticulously arranged a comprehensive care plan that enabled a family to bring their dying father home. Always spunky, and I don't think she's ever taken a "mental health day" like the rest of us!" From Dr. Barnard: "When I think of Larissa, there are many words that come to mind: competent; organized; well-rounded; imperturbable; kind; empathetic; modest. My favorite moments were seeing her with elderly patients in the hospital. I am pleased she is being recognized!"
From Dr. Silk: "Larissa continues to impress me on a daily basis. She never gets flustered, no matter how busy she is in the health center or how difficult her patient load is. I trust her implicitly with her management of patients - which is always very well thought out. And I am impressed by the little extra that she offers her patients with her DO skills of manipulation and hands-on techniques."
From Dr. Caggiano: "Larissa has impressed faculty and residents alike with her dedication and work ethic having recently completed a very challenging chief month. Larissa went far above and beyond expectations in the work that she has done taking care of a chronically ill patient and his family during his very long admission at Memorial. Larissa's a hard worker, professional, skilled teacher." Congratulations, Larissa! |
May 2012 Resident of the Month Kylee Eagles, DO, PGY-3 Barre Family Health Center

Kylee graduated in 2009 from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She received her BS in Exercise Physiology from the University of Miami where she was honored as "Undergraduate of the Year." Kylee is a fan of such sports as water skiing and surfing and also enjoys travel. She will be a Sports Medicine Fellow with our Department over the coming year.
Here are excerpts from those individuals who nominated Kylee this month:
From our residents: "Kylee was nominated for her dedication on FMIS last month. She was always early, motivated and hard working!"
From Dr. Broadhurst: "Kylee volunteered in the Medical Tent at the end of the Boston Marathon and dealt with many runners requiring immediate and intense care as leader of a section team of nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers and support personnel. A long and busy day on your feet. This was her 3rd year volunteering in this way and she, again, did an outstanding job."
From Dr. Stenger: "Kylee is a physician with deep commitment to her patients and her colleagues and with high standards. She enjoys teaching, especially about musculoskeletal issues. It's a bonus for us that she will be joining our sports fellowship program."
From Dr. Hargreaves: "Kylee set a great example on her FMIS month in April. She was enthusiastic in her teaching and her patient care, never showing signs of fatigue."
Congratulations, Kylee!
