News Around the Residency
"Must Know Info" of the WFMR March 2012 |
"The News" for March 2012
Welcome, New Residents!
Another very successful Match week for WFMR! Stacy Potts and Mike Smith would like to thank all of our health center faculty and residents for their hard work interviewing and spending lots of quality time with 107 individual applicants who interviewed at one or more of our three centers this fall. We would also like to specifically thank Kathy Alexander (Family Health); Joni Pulnik (Barre) and Katie Onorato (Hahnemann); Janice Craig and Tamara Cullen for making the interview days run like clockwork, showcasing the best our program has to offer.
The names and medical schools of our new residents are below. And in case you missed them when they were sent out last week, click here to read the biographies of this very impressive group of young physicians (may take a few seconds to load due to all the photos).

Simulation Equipment Borrowing Policy
In an effort to better utilize our extensive collection of simulators and task trainers, the residency has created a borrowing system. Faculty may borrow items for teaching purposes and residents are welcome to borrow items in order to practice hands-on skills. Recently, several of our joint-injection task trainers were utilized at the Family Medicine Interest Group Hands-On Night at the medical school.
We love to see our simulation equipment being put to good use. So if you have an idea about incorporating simulation into an upcoming workshop, a health-center based conference, or an extracurricular teaching or practice session, please contact Allison Hargreaves, who will guide you through the process of signing out equipment.
Allison can also provide you with a comprehensive list of available equipment and work with you on ways to incorporate simulation into your teaching and learning. Remember, while we do have five high-fidelity simulators, we also have a wide assortment of portable task trainers to teach physical exam skills (eg. female pelvic exams, male prostate exams), inpatient procedures (eg. ABG arm, lumbar puncture trainer), and outpatient procedures (eg. ingrown toenail removal trainers, "skin" for excisions and suturing), and much more. Contact Allison if you are interested!
New Global Health Track Blogs Fitchburg residents Stephanie Muriglan, PGY-1 and Elliot Schaeffer, PGY-2 have recently written two new great blogs about their experiences in Nicaragua as members of the Global Health Track.
Stephanie has recently returned and Elliot is writing a blog for the second year about his journey. Check them both out here: Stephanie's blog Elliot's blog
"Learn to Curl" Post-Match Celebration on March 18 We had a good turnout last week from residents and faculty at the Petersham Curling Club! We even had our two new Barre interns Noah Rosenberg and Stephanie Stormes drop by for some Sunday curling action.

February 2012 Resident of the Month
Laura Sullivan Eurich, MD, PGY-2 Hahnemann Family Health Center
Laura Eurich, MD, graduated in 2010 from UMass Medical School and also graduated in 2004 with a BS in Biology from James Madison University. Laura has been involved in a number of mentoring and volunteer activities as a medical student and has a particular interest in end-of-life care. Her personal interests include biking and marathons.
Here are excerpts from some of the individuals who nominated Laura this month: From our residents:
"Laura recently volunteered to cover FMIS for 3 nights of night float when the scheduling was messed up - a huge help to the FMIS team!"
"It is a breath of fresh air to be around someone who is always positive, always laughing, and is always amazed with what life throws at her...what a great teacher!"
Dr. Silk: "Laura is a very conscientious, comprehensive family doctor. She offers her patients such great care; she thinks of every detail and she puts in that extra effort to be sure that she communicates well with patients."
Dr. Ennis: "Laura is very motivated to go the extra mile for patients - not just her own patients but any patient she crosses paths with. Seems to put herself in their shoes and does what she would want done - true compassion."
Dr. Kaplan-Gill: "Laura is extremely dedicated to her family, colleagues and patients."
Congratulations, Laura! |
March 2012 Resident of the Month Amber Wiekamp, MD, PGY-2
Family Health Center of Worcester
Amber Wiekamp, MD is a 2010 graduate of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 2006 with both a BS in Biological Sciences and a BA in International Studies. She is fluent in Spanish and her clinical interests include Women's Health while her personal interests include cooking (and eating!) and hiking. Amber is also a member of our residency's Global Health Track.
Here are excerpts from some of the individuals who nominated Amber this month:
From our residents: "Amber's had a ton of continuities and hasn't let that affect her work or her spirits. She also covered an FMIS patient on the weekend when a colleague was out sick. To top it off, she's a great person overall, and I wish I had gotten to know her sooner!"
Dr. Ennis: "Amber is very patient-centered. She has a natural inclination to meet patients at their starting point. She has a very nice combination of humility but effectiveness."
Dr. Shields: "I really appreciate her initiative in taking ownership of the Spanish prenatal group we've done together. She has more than risen to the challenge of doing this group in another language AND learning solid group facilitation skills."
Dr. Kaplan-Gill: "Amber continually impresses me with her kindness, empathy, intelligence, and hard work."
Congratulations, Amber!

Winter 2012 Resident Retreat

An acupuncture demonstration by Margo Kaplan-Gill and Maria Majchrowski |
This year's annual retreat for our Worcester and Fitchburg residents took place on February 14 at the Wachusett Village Inn and focused on complementary medicine topics. Melissa Rathmell spoke about "Complementary/Integrative Medicine and Functional Medicine" followed by Sandy Blount's talk about Hypnosis. Tina Runyan led a participatory session on yoga and Ted Shoemaker led the residents in Tai Chi.

Another retreat highlight was the annual voting of the new Chief Residents. Congratulations to our new chiefs for 2012-2013:
Kimberly Bombaci (HFHC) Marco Cornelio (BFHC) Sean Farraher (FHCW)
and a giant WFMR "Thank you" to our outgoing chiefs who have done so much for the program this past year! We will miss you!

A popular and fun tradition at the retreat each year is Gerry Gleich's annual guitar and vocal segment "Silly Songs with Gerry Gleich." Each year we invite him back to lead the residents in singing songs like "I Am My Own Grandpa" as well as tunes that he actually penned himself, such as the one featured in the below clip called "It's A Zoo Without You." Want to see a different side of Hahnemann's Medical Director? Click here to watch a minute-long clip of his performance!
After lunch, residents chose to either hit the slopes or stay behind for massages, in keeping with the day's wellness theme. Thanks to Tamara Cullen for setting up a fun and informative day for our two residencies.
