"The News" for November 2011
Dr. Silk Honored by Worcester District Medical Society
Congratulations to Hugh Silk, MD, MPH, FAAFP who was awarded the 21st annual Dr. A. Jane Fitzpatrick Community Service Award at a WDMS ceremony on November 9. Dr. Silk received recognition for his work in oral health at the local, state and national levels. The award also mentioned Dr. Silk's other work at free clinics in Worcester and Connecticut and his teaching efforts in regard to service learning. Legislative Day at State House
Eight senior residents travelled to the Massachusetts State House on October 4, 2011 to join their resident colleagues in a Legislative Day sponsored by the Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians. Our residents heard from several Senators and Representatives including Rep. Steven M. Walsh, Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing.
Our residents then had an opportunity to speak in detail with staff from Sen Richard Moore's office about residency education, planning for careers and health care in Massachusetts. Special recognition to MAFP Legislative Liason, Ronna Wallace, for helping to organize this event. (Thanks to Jay Broadhurst, MD for submitting this item!)
FMEC North East Region Meeting 2011 Congratulations to all presenters, speakers and award recipients at this year's FMEC Regional Northeast Region meeting in Danvers, which also included a Sunday morning plenary session delivered by Lucy Candib, MD titled "Continuity of Care": Antique Tradition or Advanced Practice?"
Dr. Potts and Dr. Hargreaves at the FMEC Residency Fair (Note the Halloween theme!) Recruitment Update Michael Smith, MS, Associate Director of Admissions reports that it has been another record-setting application year for WFMR as we continue to see unprecendented numbers of residency applicants! In late October we saw a strong turnout of applicants at the FMEC Conference Residency Fair in Danvers, MA and we will have a presence at the upcoming SNMA fair at UCONN this weekend. This week we kicked off our Fall recruitment season with our first week of interviews at Family Health, Hahnemann and Barre. Interviews will run until late January. New "EKG of the Week"
Jeremy Golding, MD is preparing a weekly "EKG of the Week" that will be sent out to residents and residency faculty. Here is more from Dr. Golding: "The "EKG of the Week" is an exercise to review essential EKG skills for family physicians. These EKG's form the basis of the test EKG's we are using to assess EKG competence." Faculty and family at Barre Family Health Center's recent Health Fair |
Resident of the Month (October)
Jennifer Bradford, MD, PGY-2 Family Health Center of Worcester
Jennifer Bradford, MD is a 2010 graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine who earned her BA in Child Development from Tufts in 1998. In 2011 she completed her PGY-1 year at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida and is a Boston native.
Bency Louidor-Paulynice, PGY-1: "Jen did a great job as my senior resident last month on FMIS despite being new to the system. She is efficient, welcomes suggestions and criticism and takes great care of her patients."
Shelby Freed, Nurse Practitioner: "She's been really warm, receptive and personable and has helped to make my transition easy. She is also great to bounce ideas and questions off of."
Dr. Gill: "Jen has good insight and judgement. She is smartly aware of her needs."
Dr. Clark: "Already in the short time with us, it is a clear pleasure to work with Jen. She is consistently calm, focused on the needs of her patients, and appreciative of her learning opportunities."
Congratulations, Jennifer! |
Resident of the Month (November)Jemini Abraham, MD, PGY-1
Family Health Center of Worcester
Jemini Abraham, MD is a 2011 graduate of Ross University who earned her Bachelor's degree in Biology from Rutgers University in 2006. Jemini has worked with at-risk youth and is a Massachusetts native. She enjoys cooking and long distance running as personal interests.
From our residents: "Jemini far exceeded expectations on FMIS and despite a challenging schedule with extra nights, never once complained and was a pleasure to work with." Dr. Hargreaves: "Jemini was a true team player on FMIS in October. It was a challenging month and we were short a senior. Jemini rose to the occasion, often rounding independently even though it was only her first month on service. She provided excellent care to her patients and managed a busy service without complaint. Great job!" Dr. Martin: "You might think faculty at Barre and PGY-1s at Queen Street wouldn't have much chance to work with each other. And you're right! But I was fortunate to work with Jemini this past month while I was on call. I remember clearly the two inpatient cases where she helped us, one a unit transfer (her first) and one an admission with syncope, where her clinical approach and care were absolutely commendable. In each case, she also followed-up for feedback on improving her skills. I'm delighted Jemini has this well-deserved recognition!" Congratulations, Jemini! |
