                                      March Resident of the Month

                                          Rosanna Lau, PGY-1

                             Hahnemann Family Health Center

Rosanna Lau, MD graduated with her BS in Human Development from Cornell University in 2002 and her MD from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2010. At Tufts, Rosie served as Co-Editor in Chief of the medical school's newspaper and was also President of the Tufts chapter of the Asian-Pacific AMSA. She enjoys cooking, singing and painting.

From Geraldine Schick, PGY-2:
"I nominate Rosie Lau.  I was lucky to have her as my intern on FMIS last month.  She is hard-working, efficient, reliable and always does everything with a smile on her face. She is a pleasure to work with and never complained - even after our tenth admission on night float. She also had to do extra Saturday 24 hour calls last month (since there were only 2 interns on) and she never complained about that either."

Dr. Candib: "Rosie is efficient, energetic, seizes the ball and runs with it. Eager to take on new things."

Dr. Ennis: "Rosie is clearly a very compassionate individual. When she presents a patient it is humbling to me how deeply she genuinely CARES about them."

Dr. Lee: "Rosie has a radiant warm smile that brightens my day. She truly cares for patients in addition to providing great medical care."

Dr. Silk: "Rosie had a loss in her family recently and she was able to meet her residency expectations while tending to her family commitments with such grace. She communicated well with the residency and found a way to be there for her family - no doubt a complete physician in the making."

Dr. Caggiano: "Rosie is wonderful to work with. She has a great style with patients, very empathic and focused on educating patients about their health and helping them make informed decisions. She always comes to work with a positive attitude which is greatly appreciated."

                                  April Resident of the Month

                                            Paul Sahd, PGY-1

                                  Barre Family Health Center

Paul Sahd, DO graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2010 and graduated from Elizabethtown College in 2006 with a BS degree in Biology.  Paul has an interest in politics and is actively interested in advocating for primary care. A Pennsylvania native, his personal interests include painting and outdoor activities.

From Kathryn Wilson, PGY-1: "I would like to nominate Paul Sahd for Resident of the Month. He was an amazing intern, who always worked hard and did so with a smile. We had nights where we had 12 admissions and he went through each admission thoroughly, without difficulty and never looked frazzled or rushed. His wife just had a baby 6 days prior to starting FMIS and you would never know by his hard work and dedication to his patients and the FMIS team. It was a pleasure to be his senior."

Dr. Martin: "I'd like to give mention to Paul's remarkable care for patients, his thoughtfulness in addressing their concerns, his openness to learning and amiable presence, and most recently, his extraordinary balancing of his newborn and the residency."

Dr. Earls: "Paul is an excellent choice for this award. In his short time here, he has distinguished himself as a team player. His boundless energy and enthusiasm is infectious and makes working with him a pleasure whether in the health center, on South 6 or MCH. Paul was also one of many among the residents who made the extra effort to actively participate in resident recruitment, which resulted in a very successful Match."

Dr. Gilchrist: "It is no surprise to me that Paul is Resident of the Month. He has a great work ethic and sense of teamwork in addition to the fact that I had a lot of fun rounding with him during a busy inpatient service recently. Congratulations, Paul!"

PGY-2 Recruitment Update
We continue to interview for the open PGY-2 position at FHCW. We have had over 50 applications to date. We are committed to hiring a strong candidate who is dedicated to serving the mission of the FHCW. We appreciate everyone's help in hosting and interviewing the candidates as they come through.

Congratulations to James Avruch, PGY-1 who has been accepted as a transfer into the surgery program. We are sorry to see James leave our program but happy that he will be able to stay in the UMass family following his true passions!

Family Medicine Education Consortium
Our department is happy to be a host organization of the fall FMEC meeting. The Northeast Regional meeting will occur in Danvers, MA October 20-23rd at the Crowne Plaza - Coco Keys resort. This will be a great opportunity to have a large Umass contigent. Please start talking this up with medical students as well as amongst the residents and faculty.

This conference is a great opportunity to present. Submissions are due by May 15 for presentations. Additionally there are many awards that are available and nominations and submissions for the awards categories are due this week! Please visit the FMEC website for more information.

Chief Resident Transition
A big thank you to the 2010-11 chief residents as they breathe their big sigh of relief... they are handing the reins of the residency off to the new chiefs as of May 1. Congratulations again to the new chief residents: Kylee Eagles (Barre), Kristin Mallett (Hahnemann), and Ginny Van Duyne (Family Health.) We look forward to your leadership in this exciting new year.

Much appreciation to our outgoing chiefs Stephanie Carter (Barre), Chad Beattie (Hahnemann) and Rajiv Balasuriya (Family Health.) They have collectively led the residency through a very successful year with dedication, hardwork and an incredible commitment to excellence. Their collaborative leadership style has allowed great progress and prepared the residency for further development under the new chiefs' leadership.

May Evaluations
Semi-annual resident evaluations will be occuring in May. Residents will receive their self-evaluation form by email to be completed prior to evaluations along with portfolio update requirements. We encourage all faculty to complete the resident 360 evaluations so that the semiannual reviews can be inclusive of your feedback.

E*Value Update
Great news! As we continue to take your feedback on the cumbersome nature of E*value, we have updated it. The procedure logging was redesigned to be a bit easier. Please let us know your feedback so we can continue to tweak it to enhance our ability to keep accurate logs of your procedures. As we role out the simulation program there will be an additional logging component to keep track of simulated experiences as well. With our accreditation site vist coming up next year procedure logging is essential. More to come on this later.

Procedures Workshop

Congratulations to Kristin Mallett for her leadership on a medical student event held this week. 30+ students attended an event put on by the FMIG for procedural training in IUD placement, venipuncture, joint injection, and casting. Thank you to all the faculty and residents who assisted Kristin in this very successful event. Specifically - Katharine Barnard, David Rosa (and Laura), Katie Lee, Jeremy Golding, Stephanie Carter, and Marco Cornelio.

So You Think You Can Curl? Curling enthusiasts headed out to Petersham to hone their skills at our WFMR March Post-Match celebration!
